The document discusses questions and answers about the Yellowstone supervolcano, including how scientists determined past eruptions occurred, the differences between regular and supervolcanoes, and signs that an eruption may be imminent like increasing seismic activity and changes in hydrothermal features. It also addresses the potential devastating global impacts of an eruption at Yellowstone like volcanic winter and difficulties with rescue efforts due to ash fall.

Jei Andrei Arino Felzen Balinas Abegail Banguis Christian Berdin Denise Cagaanan Angelyn Cahapon Shaina Beatrice Casabar Jason Corage Super Volcano 1. How did the animals near the orchard park die? -The animals near in the Orchard Park all died as a result of poisoning due to poisonous gasses. And there are others that died as a result of the poaching activities. 2. How did the geologists find out the ash in Idaho is the same ash in Nebraska? - Chemical analysis reveals that the volcanic ash has the same components as an extinct volcanic caldera in Idaho. The ash has been dated by Uranium fission tracks, and by single crystal Argon dating of the source material. 3. How does the formation of a super volcano differ from that of a regular volcano? - The main difference between the two is size. Supervolcanoes are normally 30 times stronger than a regular volcano and can produce enough ash to cover the world. A supervolcano is a VEI 8, and ejects over 1 trillion tons of material. Super volcano is not cone shaped. 4. What is the name of the crater seen after a supervolcano eruption? - The name of the crater is Caldera. 5. In the movie, how is Virgil supposed to help the volcanologists at Yellowstone? - The Virgil helped determine any possibility of an eruption. 6. Mr. Liberman said that the earthquake was not volcanic in origin, what does he believe caused the earthquake initially? - He said that it was caused by tectonic plates grinding together. 7. When was the last supervolcano eruption? - It was 74,000 years ago. 8. Why are the dead trees along the caldera rim at Sour Creek Dome? - The rising level of carbon dioxide killing trees as well as events before the hydrothermal events.
9. How large is the volcanic crater?
- There were no volcanic crater, the most area of Yellowstone were volcano. 10. How many times has the Yellowstone Supervolcano Erupted? - It erupted 3 times in the last many years. 11. What is a surefire way to predict an earthquake? -Methods of statistical hypothesis testing are used to determine the probability that an earthquake such as is predicted would happen anyway. But there are no instruments that can accurately predict an earthquake. 12. What is so important about the timing of the eruptions? - It helps calculate when eruption will happen. 13. What do they smell on the airplane? - It was Sulfur. 14. Are volcanic eruptions easy to predict? Why or why not? - Yes, by the use of the Virgil and other volcanic instruments we can predict volcanic eruptions so easily. 15. What is happening to the lake at Yellowstone? - Lake temperature started to reach boiling point, several geysers started to erupt more frequently, and several volcanic vents opened up releasing volcanic gasses. 16. What do harmonic tremors indicate? - This is indicating an eruption is imminent because magma is now on the move. But shortly after the harmonic is detected, animals begin to flee the park in droves and the team witnessed bison fleeing. 17. How did geologists determine the size of the magma chamber under Yellowstone? - The magma chamber is believed to be about 40 by 80 kilometers across, similar in size to the overlying Yellowstone caldera. The top of the chamber is about 8 km deep and the bottom is around 16 km deep. 18. How do geologists think the Toba supervolcano eruption affected the planet? - It blasted a cloud of volcanic ash that triggered a volcanic winter. 19. What % of the U.S was covered by ash? - 80% covered by ash and 20% is totally unusable. 20. Why are the scientists cautious about what they say in the media? - Scientists were cautious of what they say in the public because they may give false information of what is the real status of the Yellowstone that might trigger a major panic. Yellowstone got the eye of the whole media and once a scientist makes a mistake, it is a big problem. 21. Why should everyone in the world be worried by days 3 and 4? What evidence is presented in the movie? - After 3 and 4 days of the eruption, food gets scarce and water would be contaminated. Electricity and signal for communication are lost making it harder for the rescuers to respond. People would be unable to be rescued due to heavy ash fall that would cause the death of millions. 22. How did the media and politics play into the decisions made by USGS prior to the eruption? - They leaked an e-mail that the USGS suspects an eruption any time soon. FEMA, in wake of the national panic flies Rick to D.C. to hold a conference to deny the possibility of a super eruption. However, Rick is unable to make that statement due to the model telling them otherwise of the magma chamber. 23. When did the global effects start to be felt? What were they? - One week after the eruption the ground began to fall into the empty space left by the ejected magma, thus signaling the end of the eruption. The world plunges into darkness caused by the volcanic winter, which is caused by heavy ash fall. 24. In relationship to other volcano eruptions how big will the Yellowstone eruption be? (think about the annoying brother in law on TV with the building blocks) -it is 2,500 times more powerful than Mt. St. Helens, which means it will have a massive eruptions that can affect the whole America. It would affect millions of people, their properties, homes, and even their daily life activities. And it would trigger a volcanic winter which plunges the world into darkness lasting for years and worst decades. 25. What some of the difficulties that would happen after the eruption that would inhibit to rescue people? (Give at least 2 examples) - First, is that food is running low, most foods were unable to eat due to contamination and water gets scarce. Secondly, all communication lines that are essential for rescue were blocked by the volcanic ash making it impossible for planes to safely pick up people or make drops of supplies. People will starve to death by the millions waiting to be rescued. 26. How did individual personalities play a part in delaying public warning? ... And how would you have handled it? - Everyone especially Rick keeps the real status of the supervolcano, they try to hide it against the media and politics as they were afraid of a major panic. After the eruption, it was a total disaster, and Rick reflects if he could have done something different. FEMA finally determines it has no choice but to follow Rick's advice and they follow through with the Walk to Life program. And if I was in Ricks shoes, I would definitely tell the media the truth than everyone would suffer. Telling them that a super eruption could occur anytime that would cover miles into an ash fall, so that people can evacuate safely and prepare for the disaster. Public warnings were essential as it would warn everyone to prepare, as Prevention is always better than cure.
