Nature of Man

Hobbes: People are wicked, selfish, and cruel. People will act in their own best
interests. (Every man for himself). It is by the power of the state that society
exists; man is not naturally social.

Locke: People are good by nature. People will learn from their experiences.
Man is naturally social.

Ideal Form of Governance

Hobbes: Absolute Monarchy

Locke: Democracy

Source of Authority

Hobbes: the sovereign; could lose power if failed to protect people

Locke: the people; people consent to give up some rights in order for
protection

Purpose of Government

Hobbes: to keep law and order.

Locke: to protect the peoples individual liberties and rights.

Natural Rights

Hobbes: People gives the rights they were born with to the monarchy in
exchange for protection (aka, social contract)

Locke: Life, liberty, and the right to own property (inalienable rights all people
are born with)

Private Property

Hobbes: Man can own property if the state permits it.

Locke: Private property is a mans right; a man owns himself and therefore his
labor and the labor become an object and that object is the mans rightful
property.

Social Contract
Hobbes: Exchange rights for security/safety.

Locke: When the gov. fails to uphold their end of social contract (protection)
the citizens can choose to no longer obey the authority.
