Subject: Inspection of Gear Mesh Temperature

1.0. SCOPE:

1.1. This document defines a method by which gear mesh temperatures are monitored
and evaluated.

1.2. This document does not outline installation or alignment adjustment procedures.

2.0. RERFERENCE(S):

2.1. ANSI/AGMA 1010-E95 Appearance of Gear Teeth - Terminology of Wear and

Failure

2.2. AGMA P159.04 New Techniques for Aligning and Maintaining Large Ring Gears

3.0. GENERAL INFORMATION:

3.1. FFE Minerals manufactured open ring gears are the highest quality gears of this
type available. In order to fully realize the advantages of this high quality, it is
necessary to properly install and properly align the gear set.

4.0. MESH TEMPERATURE:

4.1. The gear mesh is a significant source of heat, because forces that cause friction
and deformation of the tooth surface are changed from mechanical energy to heat
energy.

4.2. Mesh misalignment produces non-uniform load distribution across the face width
of the gear and pinion. This mal-distribution of load will result in higher operating
temperature at the point of the highest load. Therefore mesh misalignment will
cause the operating temperature on one end of the face to be higher than on the
other.

4.3. The concentration of load at the gear and pinion end of face will result in
premature failure of the gear and/or the pinion teeth.

5.0. INSPECTION OF GEAR MEASURE TEMPERATURE USING A PORTABLE

INFRARED THERMOMETER:

5.1. The following procedure presupposes that the gearing has been accurately
installed and statically aligned.

5.2. Continually operate the mill for at least 24 hours at steady load to allow the mesh
temperature to stabilize.

5.3. Use a portable infrared thermometer capable of measuring temperatures up to 600

degrees Fahrenheit.

5.4. Set infrared thermometer emissivity level to 0.8.

5.5. Set infrared thermometer operating mode to peak.

5.6. Pinion tooth flanks operating temperature will be measured while the mill is
operating.

5.7. Position the infrared thermometer approximately 3 feet away from the pinion.

5.8. Refer to Figure 1, at each of five stations shown, measure pinion temperature by
slowly sweeping the thermometer through a 10 to 15 degree arc as shown. The
thermometer will hold the highest temperature within the arc.

5.9. Record the temperatures for each of the five stations on Table 1 of Figure 1.

5.10. Plot temparture against station number on Table 2 of Figure 1. Subtract

temperature at station 1 from that at station 5 to obtain the temperature gradient
G. (Note the sign of G ).

6.0. INTERPRETATION OF TEMPERATURE PLOT:

6.1. Independent of gear set alignment, the presence of Profile Error, Wear, Surface
Fatigue, Plastic Deformation, and other surface distress will influence the surface
temperature of the pinion flanks.

6.2. Besides tooth surface distress, there are other factors that will influence the
surface temperature of the pinion flanks. Some of these factors are pier settling,
loose sole plates, load fluctuation, and transient heat. Therefore, the surface
condition of the gear and pinion teeth and the above mentioned factors must be
considered when interpreting the temperature plots.

6.3. Figures 2 through 5 are temperature plots, illustrating acceptable and

unacceptable alignment.

6.4. The temperature gradient (G), is the difference between the temperature of station
1 minus the temperature of station 5.

6.4.1.1. Refer to Figure 2, temperature plot illustrating the temperature
distribution of a gear set having optimum alignment.

6.4.1.2. Temperature gradient equal to zero (G = 0) indicates that the

load is uniformly distributed across the gear and pinion face
width.

6.4.2. ACCEPTABLE ALIGNMENT

6.4.2.1. Refer to Figure 3, temperature plot illustrating the temperature

distribution of a gear set having acceptable alignment.

6.4.2.2. Temperature gradient less than or equal to fifteen (G 15F)

indicates an acceptable load distribution across the gear and
pinion face width.

6.4.3. UNACCEPTABLE ALIGNMENT

6.4.3.1. Refer to Figure 4, temperature plot illustrating the temperature

distribution of a gear set having unacceptable alignment.

6.4.3.2. Temperature gradient greater than thirty (G > 30F) indicates

an unacceptable load distribution across the gear and pinion
face width.

6.4.3.3. The alignment of the gear set should be adjusted immediately.

6.4.4. UNACCEPTABLE ALIGNMENT

6.4.4.1. Refer to Figure 5, temperature plot illustrating the temperature

distribution of a gear set having unacceptable alignment.

6.4.4.2. Temperature gradient greater than fifteen and less than or equal
to thirty (15F>G 30F) indicates an unacceptable load
distribution across the gear and pinion face width.

6.4.4.3. Schedule an alignment of the gear set as soon as possible.

7.0. ALIGNMENT ADJUSTMENT:

7.1. Alignment adjustment will involve moving the mill bearings and/or the pinion
bearing pillow blocks.

7.2. MOVEMENT OF THE MILL BEARING:

7.2.1. Adjust alignment by moving both the feed end mill bearing and the
discharge end mill bearing in the horizontal plane.

7.2.2. Adjusting the mill bearings may require the realignment of the mill
bearings.

7.3. MOVEMENT OF THE PINION PILLOW BLOCKS

7.3.1. Adjust alignment by moving the pinion bearing pillow blocks in the
horizontal and/or the vertical plane.

7.3.2. Adjusting the pinion bearing pillow blocks may require the realignment of
the drive train.
