Installation Ceremonies for Chapter Officers (Samples)

Guidelines and Recommendations/ Suggested Scripts, Themes & Colors

The installing officer needs to know the total financial allowance for the ceremony, if expected to develop a theme.
This allowance should include such items as transportation fee, meals, lodging as appropriate for the installing
officer, and any installation fee the officer may charge. Corsages, as well as any other paraphernalia needed must
be considered in the allotments. The budget or the standing rules must provide for this allowance of funds. If the
installing officer is planning the theme and making various arrangements, the funds should be tendered to the
officer before the meeting. The installing officer should not have to pay for incidental expenses. The honor of
being asked to serve as installing officer diminishes if one has to underwrite expenses connected with the
ceremony.

Developing a theme
An installation ceremony must be as individual as a signature. No two groups or organizations are identical. The
variables are many and all these must be taken into consideration. When choosing a theme, such things as time of
the year, goals of the group, and aggregate age of the group, should play an important part in the final decision.

The script to be used will vary for each installation. The number of people to be installed, as well as the particular
office being filled, will determine to a large extent the kind of script chosen. The wording of the script has to be
tailored to fit each office and ideally will be tailored to blend with the aims and objectives of the group.

The following scripts and/or themes are to give you some ideas for your own installation.

Installation scripts
1. Candles
Needed: One large candle to represent the Chapter. A smaller candle for each officer.
The installing officer lights the large Chapter candle.
This candle flame represents our dedication to serve (Name of Chapter). The candle constitutes the
passing of the flame of light and loyalty from one set of officers to another. During their year of
service, each retiring officer has contributed knowledge, experience, and understanding to the Chapter
flame.

(As each new officer is introduced, the outgoing officer lights a candle from the Chapter candle and
presents it to the new officer.)

Secretary (name), as Secretary, you shall give notice of all meetings and activities of (name of
Chapter), and shall carry on the correspondence of our Chapter. You will also keep an accurate record
of the proceedings of all meetings.
Treasurer (name), as Treasurer, you are the fiscal officer of (name of Chapter). You will receive all
funds, pay all bills promptly, and keep accurate records. These records will be kept up-to-date and
available if needed.
Vice President (name), as Vice President, you will perform all duties and exercise all powers of the
President in his/her absence. You will also be official host/hostess at our Chapter functions. May your
planning be a joy to you and a joyous experience to each of us who attend.
President-Elect (name), as President-Elect, you will perform all duties of the Vice President in
his/her absence and shall act as his/her substitute whenever necessary. Remember, you are very
important to your President. You must always lend a helping hand. Always be ready with words of
encouragement.
President (name), you have been selected by the membership of (name of Chapter) to serve as our
leader for (year). You will use your talents and abilities to organize the year's work, motivate our
volunteers, lead and work with enthusiasm. You are charged to preside with dignity, fairness, and
 impartiality. Make the well being of (name of Chapter) your first consideration in all your actions as
President. (President name), I am very happy to install you as President of (name of Chapter). I know
that you will fill this office with dignity and understanding. Never hesitate to ask for assistance from
your officers. We are here to help you.

2. Colors
These colors could be presented in the form of flowers or colored ribbon around candles. Colors can
also be used for the paper on which bylaws duties have been type or the ribbon tying scrolls that
outlines bylaw duty.
Throughout the ages, color has been used to reflect moods, denote countries and organizations, and
signify important events. Today we will use color to welcome and honor our (year) officers.

A. Secretary (name) our Secretary. Your color is red, a symbol of vigilance and alertness. Both of
these qualities will help you record the important events and decisions of (name of Chapter)
accurately.
B. Treasurer (name), our Treasurer. Your color is white, which denotes complete truthfulness and
honesty. You have the most trustworthy position in our Chapter. You are the keeper of our funds
and assets.
C. Vice President (name), our Vice President. Your color is green, a sign of creation and growth.
You will welcome and orient the new members in our Chapter who will help us grow and prosper
in the coming future. In his/her absence, you will be the acting President.
D. President-Elect (name), our President-Elect. Your color is orange, which signifies loyalty. You
are the right hand of our President and will help him/her whenever necessary. You are an
apprentice and should become familiar with all aspects of the Chapters' affairs.
E. President (name), our President. For you we have the colors of purple and gold. Purple the color
of royalty. It symbolizes leadership and power. You are the leader of (name of Chapter) and have
the power to carry out the business of the Chapter. Gold signifies unity. Your members are united
to help you achieve the goals of our Chapter during the coming year. Remember to rely on us
when you need help.

Other colors for additional officers are Blue-Truth and Wisdom and Silver-Purity and Valor!

3. General Installation
An installation is a solemn occasion. Solemn with the acceptance of serious and important duties to be
shouldered, but it is likewise a joyous event with memories of past work well done, of problems faced
together, of friendships made, and the honor of working with others and for others.

A. President (name) This gavel has passed to you the duties, responsibilities, and government of
our Chapter. Remembering experiences of past administrations, the cooperation of the officers and
committee chair, and the appreciation of the members, I predict even greater achievements for you
and this Chapter.
B. Nominating Committee (names) Because the officers represent the Chapter, we as members
would like them to be a composite of executive ability, vision, tolerance, wit, and wisdom with
agreeable voice. The Nominating Committee should be sufficiently acquainted with the members
to know their suitability for office and secure their consent to serve. Their qualification and duties
must be seriously considered for upon the right leadership depends the success of an organization.
C. Treasurer- (name) Money is of no value unless used wisely, and while success cannot be measured
in terms of dollars and cents, your books are, nevertheless, a record of the "viability" of our
Chapter. As Treasurer, it will be your duty to expend funds as voted by the Chapter and keep an
accurate record of monies spent and collected and to make a final accounting at the close of the
year.
D. Secretary- (name) As Secretary, your duties are two-fold. You have the pleasant duty of expressing
the good will of our Chapter in attending to its general correspondence as frequently as needed
 and as promptly as the occasion demands. You must also keep an accurate accounting of all
Chapter proceedings. This will be a detailed record or much work well done and how it was
accomplished.
E. Vice President- (name) As Vice President, you will assist the President in his /her undertakings for
the Chapter and in case of his/her absence, perform duties in his/her place. The President may turn
to you often for encouragement and helplet your advice always be soothing and honest.
F. President-Elect-(name) As President-Elect, you are an apprentice. You have time of Chapter
service and experience behind you but your role, as President will be very new. Use this year to
serve the Chapter and, in particular, the President in any capacity he/she designates. Also, observe,
learn, and plan ahead to make our transition in leadership next year as smooth as possible.
G. President-(name) As President, upon you will rest the responsibility of leading the Chapter in all
its endeavors. You will preside at all Chapter general meetings. You will appoint members to lead
committees and will serve as an ex-officio of the committees. As coordinator of the Chapters'
general activities, you hold the gavel, but in your heart and eyes of those you lead, you hold the
bright banner of inspiration.

Fellow members, when you join our AORN Chapter, you agree to contribute generously of your time, your
energy, and your thoughts realizing that only through cooperation can we hope to achieve our goals. You
have indicated your faith and trust by electing these officers for our Chapter. They have given the pledge
of service. If they are to serve us well, they must have help and cooperation from us. Will you pledge to
them now that you will endeavor to attend meeting regularly, serve on committees, and work, as
individuals, in loyal support of these officers in the fulfillment of their duties, in hopes that every program
and activity will be a credit to our Chapter?

To the officers-you are not really new officers. You are new only to these offices. All of you have had past
experience in AORN work. Your election has come as an honor, an "award of merit" in recognition of
work well and faithfully done, and so you have been chosen now as the standard bearers of your Chapter.

Theme ideas
4. Animals Installation Ceremony
There are approximately one million types of animals in existence today. Each of these has a distinct
personality of its own. Through the years, animals have helped, influence, and provided companionship to
many people. Because of this, we will use some well-known animals to help us introduce our new (year)
officers.
5. Candles Installation Ceremony
The work of your officers has just beginning. The light from their candles will make the Chapter glow
with activity. As you light your candles, do it with the promise that an unwavering light will remain as a
shining example that you as members are constant in your participation in Chapter activities.
6. Spices Installation Ceremony
My dear members, you will find at each of your places a bouquet of parsley. This lovely, green, crisp herb
enhances many of our dishes with flavor and color. And so it is with your presencefor without you, our
Chapter would not prosper. Just as spices add flavor to foods, your hard work is the main ingredient in our
Chapter's recipe for success.
7. Jewels Installation Ceremony
The story of precious stones is one of the most romantic history. The life of the gem is infinitely more
stable and enduring than the life of any living thing. Because of this, we have put a great value on precious
stones. History and legend throughout the centuries have attached certain meaning to gems. We have
chosen five of the best known as symbols of your duties for the coming year.
8. Landmarks Installation Ceremony
Throughout the ages, people have looked upon landmarks as a sign of strength and guidance. Ancient
travelers, who sighted landmarks, knew they were taking the right path and would reach their destination
soon. Today, we will use famous landmarks to introduce our new officers. These leaders will be our
guidance and support throughout (year).
9. Growth Installation Ceremony
The greatest thing about life is that as long as we live, we have the privilege of growing. In order to grow,
we must accept ourselves with our limitations, let us then learn to accept ourselves; accept the truth that
we are capable in some directions and limited in others. We can learn new skills, make new friends, and
accept new responsibilities if we refuse to become rigid and fixed in our ways. When we fail to see
evidence of growth in a tiny plant, it soon withers and dies. Let us work toward continued growth for our
Chapter.
10. Harvest Installation Ceremony
We are approaching the harvest time of the year not only in our gardens and fruit orchards, but also in our
Chapter year. We pause today to inspect the fruits of the Chapter year and, perhaps, to boast a bit because
of the abundance of the crop. We are especially proud of our retiring officers. The membership is indeed
grateful for the many hours you've spent weeding the garden and tilling the soil for new and sustained
growth. You see here a gathering of flowers representing the harvest for our year. For you newly elected
officers, now is the time for planting and preparation. There may be new projects you wish to plant; there
is always weeding to do to replenish the nutrients of growth. Tend our garden well so that the next year our
crop may be as beautiful.
11. Lighthouses Installation Ceremony
Lighthouses have always fascinated people. They draw us to the water and to the protection of the beacons
of light they provide.

A little information about the light house

Lighthouse keeping was a perilous job. Individuals who tended the lighthouses were known as "Keepers of
the Light." Keepers of the light needed to handle a boat expertly and forecast weather accurately. They
needed to be ready to rescue people from rough waters at a moment's notice. They lived alone for long
periods of time and performed heavy physical labor. They needed to be tough enough to survive
hurricanes, tidal waves, ice storms and even Indian attacks.

Much like the "Keepers of the Light," nurses are "Keepers of Health Care." As keepers of health care we
need to be able to multitask with precision, speed and swiftness, and we must be able to look ahead to the
needs of the patient, their family, and members of our multidisciplinary health care team. We also need to
be ready to rescue anyone in need at a moment's notice. We understand the demands of physical and
mental fatigue. As nurses, we have proven the test of time as to strength, for we all have weathered many
battles.

As the ________ Chapter, you have had strong "Keepers of the Light." The beam of light has been
steady and strong.
Recognize first the outgoing President: As you see the flames are burning bright, each symbolizes
the strength, wisdom, and passion for perioperative nursing. These beacons of light have been an
ongoing light and strength with multiple activities for the Chapter. Now the activities of "Keepers
of the Light" have been passed on to a new group of keepers. "Keeper of the Light," involves hard
work, many hours, and dedication, and commitment.
Recognize the incoming President: I formally recognize the Chapters (year) Board of Directors!
12. Building Blocks Installation Ceremony
One gift most young children receive early in life is a set of blocks. Blocks fuel the imagination
and children can spend hours building houses, skyscrapers, and cities with them. Children learn
quickly that every block in their created structures is essential. If one block is removed, the
building can come tumbling down. Likewise, every member in the Chapter is vital to the well
being of the organization. If one member falters, a group is weakened.
Officers are a significant part of the framework in a Chapter. Just as the blocks at the bottom of a
structure support an entire building, an organization's officers support their Chapter when they
provide competent leadership. When officers perform their specific tasks, the Chapter structure
remains strong.
 Today, the officers of the _______________ [name of Chapter] shall be installed using a theme of
blocks. The blocks given are symbolic reminders to the officers that they are now an integral part
of the Chapter's framework. The successful completion of their duties will help keep their Chapter
intact. Will the newly elected officers, please come forward? [Have the officers line up in order,

_______________ [name of Treasurer], as Treasurer, you are the cornerstone of this Chapter. As
the cornerstone is the basic element of a structure, you are a necessary element of your Chapter.
Your duties include collecting and depositing money, paying Chapter bills as directed by the
executive Board, and giving a monthly financial statement to your Chapter. Do you promise to
fulfill the many duties of your new office? [Officer should answer, "I do." Pick up officer's block.]
You have publicly declared that you will help to keep your Chapter's framework intact. May this
block be your constant reminder. [Give the block to the officer.]
_______________ [name of reporter], as reporter, you are the arch of this Chapter. As the arch is a
graceful span of an opening in a structure, you, through your writing, represent your Chapter in a
graceful manner. Your duties include writing letters and taking care of your entire Chapter's
correspondence. Do you promise to fulfill the many duties of your new office? [Officer should
answer, "I do." Pick up officer's block.] You have publicly declared that you will help to keep your
Chapter's framework intact. May this block be your constant reminder. [Give the block to the
officers.]

buttress supports and gives stability to a building, you support your Chapter with accurate records.
Your duties include listening attentively at all times, writing up the minutes of each meeting, and
keeping the history of the Chapter. Do you promise to fulfill the many duties of your new office?

As a pillar provides firm upright support for a super structure, you provide strength to this
Chapter. Your duties include chairing the membership committee, keeping all Chapter members

front of a building, or facade, is given special architectural treatment, you take on a special dignity

one of you has different skills and talents that are needed by this organization. Use your many
abilities and support your officers. When you work together, you can build a strong Chapter from

13. Rainbow Installation Ceremony I
A rainbow is made up of seven different colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and
violet. Each one of these colors is exquisite; however, when they all come together to form a
rainbow, they become unequaled in beauty. Likewise, Chapters are made up of many types of
people. Each person is unique, but in joining a Chapter, a new member becomes a part of a
colorful group unequaled in strength.
Although there are only seven colors in the spectrum, there are over two million tints and shades
of these basic colors. The tints and shades of the colors can be compared to the many talents and
 skills that individual members bring to a Chapter. Some members have creative abilities, some
have organizational skills, and some have leadership qualities.
Today, the officers of the _______________ [name of Chapter] will be installed using the colors
of the rainbow. Just as each color of the spectrum is distinctive, each office of this Chapter has
specific tasks. When officers successfully perform their duties, they help keep their Chapter
running smoothly. Will the newly elected officers please come forward? [Have the officers line up
with the Treasurer first.]
[Give the Treasurer their gift.] The color red symbolizes the Treasurer. Red represents energy,
vitality, and perseverance. It is also known as a sacrificial color, indicating one's willingness to
give of oneself. As Treasurer, your duties include collecting all dues and monies, paying all
approved bills, and keeping accurate financial records. You will be giving of yourself in many
ways to this Chapter as you handle its financial responsibilities. May the red color of your ribbon
give you the energy, vitality, and perseverance needed to fulfill these obligations.
[Give the reporter their gift.] The color orange symbolizes the reporter. Orange stands for
thoughtfulness and consideration. As reporter, your duties include handling all of this Chapter's
correspondence. Remember to take the time to think before you write. Your words are a reflection
of this Chapter and its members. May the orange color of your ribbon always remind you to be
thoughtful and considerate.
[Give the Secretary their gift.] The color yellow symbolizes the Secretary. Considered to be bright
and optimistic color, yellow stands thought and mental concentration. As Secretary, your duties
include keeping an accurate record of all of this Chapter's business. Writing up each meeting's
minutes will require a great deal of thought. May the yellow color of your ribbon give you the
mental concentration and optimism needed to fulfill your commitment.
[Give the vice-President their gift.] The color blue symbolizes the vice-President. Blue represents
healing love, faith, loyalty, and inspiration. Blue is a calming color. As vice-President you are in
training for the office of President. Your faith and loyalty are important to this Chapter's members,
and especially to the President who will reply on you for help. As chair of the membership
committee, inspire members, old and new, to become active in your Chapter. As a source of
healing love, you must strive to keep members in harmony about projects and goals. May the blue
color of your ribbon give you the inspiration needed to face the challenges of this office.
[Give the President their gift.] The color purple symbolizes the President. Purple represents
leadership, greatness, and unselfish efforts. A regal color, purple is associated with royalty or
persons of high rank. As President, you will be treated royally for you have been elected to the
highest office in your Chapter. Being President is an honor and a privilege, but with this esteemed
office comes many responsibilities. Duties of the office include presiding at all meetings, dealing
with internal Chapter matters, and handling any Chapter crises. As President, you are also this
Chapter's representative to the community. May the purple color of your ribbon remind you to
give unselfishly of yourself as you lead your Chapter.
During this ceremony, each officer has been installed with a different color. Alone, each color is
striking, but when the colors come together, a larger more beautiful thing occurs. [Pull all the
streamers together.] A rainbow is created. Each color is needed to make this rainbow, just as each
officer is necessary to make this Chapter run properly.
[To the membership.] Members, you are also a part of the rainbow. You are the tints and shades of
these basic colors. You bring various talents and skills to this Chapter. Work with your officers,
and together you can make this Chapter a beautiful one.

mental concentration and optimism needed to fulfill your commitment.

healing love, faith, loyalty, and inspiration. Blue is a calming color. As Vice President you are

members as you assist the officers with the day to day work of running the chapter. May
orange inspire you and assist you as you carry out your duties. Will the returning Board
members please join us.
XXX, please come forward. Violet represents the Nominating Committee. Because the
officers represent the Chapter, we as members like them to be a composite of executive ability,
vision, tolerance, wit, and wisdom with agreeable voice. The Nominating Committee should
be sufficiently acquainted with the members to know their suitability for office and secure
their consent to serve. Their qualifications and duties must be seriously considered for upon
the right leaders depends the success of the Chapter. Violet is to remind you of the duties of
each office as you make for selections for the slate. Will the returning Nominating Committee
members and Melissa, as their advisor, please join us.
During this ceremony each of the officers has been installed with a different color. Alone, each
color is striking, but when the colors come together, a larger more beautiful thing occurs. A
rainbow is created. Each color is needed to make this rainbow, just as each officer is necessary
to make this chapter run properly and successfully.

White represents the members who are at the very core of this organization. It is a color which
can become any of the colors of our rainbow. You bring various talents and skills to this

15. Puzzle Pieces Installation Ceremony
Puzzles are a part of our daily lives. There are crossword puzzles, number puzzles, and jigsaw
puzzles. Children learn to work puzzles at an early age and this process of figuring out how
everything fits together continues through adulthood.
The unique thing about puzzles is that until the last word, number, or piece is put into place, the
puzzle is incomplete. Every word, number, or piece is needed. Likewise, every member of this
organization is essential. If one person fails to attend a meeting or function, a piece of this Chapter
is missing, making it incomplete.
Today, the officers of the _______________ [name of Chapter] will be installed using pieces of a
jigsaw puzzle. Each officer has different duties to perform just as each piece of a puzzle is shaped
differently. The officers are the leadership pieces in this organization. They provide guidance and
help keep everything running. Will the newly elected officers please come forward? [Have officers
line up in order with the Treasurer first.]
The Treasurer's piece in the puzzle is a financial piece. Your duties include collecting and
depositing money, writing checks, and giving a monthly financial statement to your Chapter. Do
you accept the responsibilities of this office? [The officer should answer, "I do." Give the officer a
puzzle piece and small puzzle.] Congratulations. You are an important piece in this organization.
Always work to keep your Chapter complete.
The reporter's piece in the puzzle is an inscribing piece. Your duties include writing letters and
notes that will display your Chapter in a positive light to the community. Do you accept the
responsibilities of this office? [The officer should answer, "I do." Give the officer a puzzle piece
and small puzzle.] Congratulations. You are an important piece in this organization. Always work
to keep your Chapter complete.
The Secretary's piece in the puzzle is a writing piece. Your duties include taking minutes at every
meeting and making sure that all the decisions of your Chapter are accurately recorded for the
Chapter's history. Do you accept the responsibilities of this office? [The officer should answer, "I
do." Give the officer a puzzle piece and small puzzle.] Congratulations. You are an important piece
in this organization. Always work to keep your Chapter complete.
The vice-President's piece in the puzzle is a membership piece. Your duties include chairing the
membership committee and working closely with your President. Spark Chapter interest in all
members, old and new, and support your President. Do you accept the responsibilities of this
office? [The officer should answer, "I do." Give the officer a puzzle piece and small puzzle.]

16. It Is Written Installation Ceremony
Aware of it or not, each of us writes a page for others to see. Some people write pages of love,
understanding, and cheerfulness while others write pages that are filled with negativity,
intolerance, and bitterness. Our actions, words, and deeds become our compositions.
Officers of an organization are no exception. Together, they write an entire Chapter in their
Chapter's history. To ensure that the pages written are positive, the officers must strive to complete
their various obligations promptly and effectively. A successful Chapter is comprised of dedicated
leaders.
Today, the officers of the _______________ [name of Chapter] will be given a pen as they are
installed. These pens can contribute to the writing of this Chapter's next Chapter when the officers
use them to fulfill the duties and tasks of their respective positions. Will the newly elected officers

Fine Art was once described as that in which the hand, the head, and the heart of man go together.
So lets describe AORN (Chapter name) as a work of Fine Art. Your hands do the work, your heads
reason, and your hearts feel and love. All Chapter projects and programs will be better achieved when,
in harmony, you work with hands, head, and heart.

The heart is especially important to us tonight with emphasis on a loving, giving heart, as the officers
of the Chapter of AORN______ will be installed.
The hands of a Chapter are its members, old and new, to whom a Chapter owes its success in projects
and without whom a Chapter would cease to exist as a living, loving, and working institution.

The mind of a Chapter might well be its Board of Directors, for without this group to consider and
reason out the projects and requests that are directed to it, the business of deciding what work is to be
done would be so time consuming there would be little time for other work.

Without a doubt, the heart of the Chapter would be its officers. They should always keep the Chapter
members feeling compassionate and loving in all Chapter work.

An installation is a solemn occasion. Solemn with the acceptance of serious and important duties to be
shouldered, but it is likewise a joyous event with memories of past work well done, of problems faced
together, of friendships made, and the honor of working with others and for others.

It is my privilege to install your newly elected officers and nominating committee for the coming year.
The year that we will be leaving tonight has been a most outstanding oneone of which you may each
be proud. The officers who served you may each leave with a sense of pride in their leadership and in
the knowledge that they leave for you a firm foundation for building and the legacy of true, strong
hearts.

Past President: please stand when called. (Name), as Past President, you have already provided
this Chapter with your loving touch. The membership is appreciative of all your efforts and hard

agreeable voice. Because few human beings combine such perfection, the Nominating Committee

keep the minutes of the Board meetings and business meetings so as to have an accurate record of

President-Elect: (Name), as President-Elect, you are an apprentice. You have time and experience
of Chapter service behind you, but your role as President will be very new. Use this year to serve
the Chapter and, in particular, the President in any capacity he/she designates. Observe, learn, and
plan ahead to make our transition in leadership next year as smooth as possible. Do you accept this

Vice President: (Name), as Vice-President, your duty is primarily to assist the President and all
