Spreadsheets Final Assignment:

When Life Gives You Lemons

Spreadsheet Set Up:

Open Excel and create a data workbook for recording your information.
Call this file Lemonade Stand.xls and save this in your INF1060 folder

This workbook will include 3 sheets. 1- title page, 2- sheet displaying data from lemonade stand, and 3- sheet
for graphs. Give each sheet a clear title.

Open Google Chrome and go to the website:

http://www.coolmath-games.com/lemonade/

Before you begin your actual data collection, you might want to experiment with how the lemonade stand
game runs for a few days. Take about 10-15 minutes (days of the game, NOT classes).

Step 1: Set the page layout to landscape

Set up column headings as shown
Wrap all text in the column headings
Type the numbers 1 to 14 in cells A3 to A16
Write Total in Cell A17

Step 2: Format title of spread sheet as shown: Your Names Lemonade Stand
Merge A1 to L1
Include the title Type of Day in cell L2.

Step 3: Turn on all borders for A2 to L17

Add a thick bottom boarder in between row 9 and 10

Step 4: Create formulas for columns F, J, K

Total expenses = add all expenses together
Gross Profit = Number of cups sold * price charged per cup
Net Profit = Gross profit expenses
Use auto fill to drag the formulas all the way down to row 16for now no answers will appear

Step 5: Format fonts and fills on your spreadsheet.

Format the appropriate columns to currency ($)
Game Play:
Step 6: Visit the game website, choose the 7-day simulation.
Each day, check the weather forecast and average temperature.
Make purchase selections for: cups, lemons, ice, sugar that you think you will need for that day

Step 7: Record how much you spent on each item in your spreadsheet EVERY DAY!

Step 8: Set the price you will charge per cup each day. Record this price in row G each day.

Step 9: Determine the amount of lemon, sugar, and ice you will use for your lemonade recipe.
These items DO NOT get recorded on your spreadsheet.

Step 10: Run the simulation game for the day. *Do not alter the cup price during the day. *

Step 11: After the day ends, record the following on your spreadsheet: number of cups sold, number of
potential customers.

*The game will not give you values for Columns F, J, Kyou have to write formulas for those 3 columns!

Include the information about what type of day you had. (Pitiful, Average, Good, Great)

Step 12: Run the simulation again for 6 more days. Record all data on the spreadsheet as you go.

Step 14: Once the 7 days are complete, copy the information from the End of Season Report into your
spreadsheet. Highlight info in Yellow.

STOP HERE! Once the 6 days are complete- we will be doing it for another 7 days next class.

Step 15: If you have a surplus, highlight the number in GREEN

If its a deficit highlight in RED
**The net Profit/Loss from the end of season report will not match the next profit/loss on your
spreadsheet unless you did all 14 days consecutively. You are not being graded on whether or not these
numbers match, so dont worry about it.

Graphing: (Once all 14 days are completed with information)

Step 16: Create the following 2 graphs of your lemonade stand data:
Graph #1--Line graph showing net profit each day
Graph #2--Column graph showing comparison of potential customers vs. cups sold

Step 17: Edit the fill colors for both graphs

Step 18: Insert appropriate titles/Legends on both graphs

*Make sure you place the Graphs on the 3rd sheet

Written Response:
Step 19: Save your Excel data sheet and open up a Microsoft Word document.
Step 20: Write the answers to the following questions:
Please copy and paste these questions to your new document and save it as Lemonade Stand.doc in your
INF1060 folder.
These are NOT one or two word answers. You MUST answer in paragraph form. (2 marks per question)
How did you do? Do you think your lemonade stand was successful? Why or Why Not?
What did you learn from playing the game?
Looking over your data, do you see any patterns? Explain.
What advice would you give someone who wants to be successful at playing the game?

Submission:
Step 21: On the title slide in the excel file include your name and todays date.
When you have completed the Lemonade Stand assignment and the Written Response Submit both files to
the Moodle Drop Box provided. Upload both files to 1 submission.

Make sure your names are clearly marked on both the word document and the excel file!
