CLEAN AIR ASIA
Catalyzing action for clean air
and livable cities in Asia
ABOUT CLEAN AIR ASIA
Established in 2001 as the premier air quality network for Asia by the Asian
Development Bank, the World Bank and USAID, we aim to reduce air pollution
and greenhouse gas emissions in 1000+ cities in Asia through a range of
199
support to providing training, and
implementing pilot
projectsan average of
cities in Asia
We work with energy, environment, health and transport ministries, cities, the
private sector, development agencies, academia and civil society to provide
leadership and technical knowledge in Air Quality and Climate Change and
Sustainable Transport (Low Emissions Urban Development, Clean Fuels and
Vehicles, and Green Freight and Logistics).
Since 2007, Clean Air Asia has been a UN-recognized partnership. Our network
is comprised of 261 organizations around the world, including seven Country
Networks - Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and
Vietnam. Our headquarters are in Manila, Philippines, and we have offices in
Beijing, China, and New Delhi, India.

OUR MISSION
Asia without
air pollution A place where people
and the environment are
free from the harmful
effects of ever-worsening
air quality
A region where healthy
cities and sustainable living,
energy and transport are the
norm and not the exception
Our mission is to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in Asia
and contribute to a livable and healthy Asia for all people, both now and in the
future. Clean Air Asia is a platform for change, working with partners around the
world to reduce emissions through such key approaches as research, policies,
information and capacity building.
OUR APPROACH
Actionable guidance
for policymakers to
reduce air pollution and High-level expertise An ethos of
greenhouse gases at in air quality partnership,
city, national and management collaboration and
regional levels across Asia cooperation
OUR AIMS
Decision-makers have the knowledge, data and tools to
understand and address their air pollution challenges

Air Quality and Climate Change Program
Ninety-eight percent of cities in low and middle-income countries with populations of
more than 100,000 are suffering from heavily polluted air. Clean Air Asia, as the regional
resource hub for air quality management training, is responding to the international call for
action on air pollution and is helping to strengthen the capacity of stakeholders to improve
air quality through the Air Quality and Climate Change (AQCC) Program.
The AQCC Program is supporting cities in the management of air pollution and greenhouse
gases, building their capacity in key areas such as air quality standards and monitoring,
emission inventories, air quality communication and clean air action plans.

The Sustainable Transport Program has three components: Clean fuels and vehicles, green
freight and logistics, and low emissions urban development.
The Cities Clean Air Partnership (CCAP) is an initiative that seeks to address the
challenges that cities face in improving air quality by making a clear business case that
links air quality improvements to cities economic and quality-of-life decisions.
The core of the initiative is the development of a certification scheme that will:
Clean Air Asia has been working in China for more than a decade,
and in 2005 was the first NGO to have established a city air quality
management network throughout the country in collaboration with the
Foreign Economic Cooperation Office of the Ministry of Environmental
Protection. In the past decade, Clean Air Asias China office has conducted
11 nationwide annual air quality management workshops, seven regional
air quality management workshops and training, 13 green-transport-
oriented workshops, bringing together national and local government
environmental and transport officials, and national and international
experts from 100 cities to build the capacity of cities, promote learning
between cities, and provide input into national policymaking.
Clean Air Asia initiated green freight pilot projects in China in 2008, and
has successfully established and run a national green freight development
program in collaboration with key partners and stakeholders since 2012.
India
The overall objective of Clean Air Asias work in India is to improve air
quality and contribute to more livable and healthy cities. The focus is on
cities with high impact potential that can generate wider change. Clean
Air Asias India office is primarily targeted at transport, green freight and
sustainable mobility.
Through the India office, Clean Air Asia is leading the regional push for
green freight and was instrumental in helping to establish the Green
Freight India Initiative as a platform for stakeholders to reduce emissions
from within the sector. The India office has also been at the forefront of
efforts to develop a model with which shippers and carriers can determine
their carbon footprint and be provided with carbon-offset solutions.
Clean Air Asias India office also developed a Green Trucks Toolkit that
provides strategies on fuel savings and helps shippers evaluate their fleet
and implement suitable interventions.
The India office also conducted a walkability survey in six Indian cities that
resulted in three cities - Chennai, Hyderabad and Bhubaneswar - agreeing
to improve walkability. This led to the development of Clean Air Asias
Walkability app, available for Android and iOS phones, to enable users to
conduct walkability audits of their cities. The app has received numerous
awards and has been downloaded more than 7000 times and data has
been received from more than 100 cities in 30 countries. The Association
of Municipal and Development Authorities in India also recommends the
app to city governments and development bodies as a tool to keep track of
walkability conditions.
