Professional Growth Plan

Long Term Goal(5 years):

After I graduate I plan to take a year and just substitute teach while working at my other

job. After the year I will apply to different high schools in the valley and try to either teach

American History or a Government class. For the first year I want to try and integrate technology

into my lessons as much as possible, while also having the students collaborate together on

projects and assignments. For this I have a lot of background in some different types of tools to

use in the classroom such as secretive and kahoot, but there are many different types of sites

and apps that I will try and integrate into the classroom and test with my students to see if they I

will change my method of teaching and have my lessons range from lectures to more interactive

and kinetic lessons for my students to learn. I will observe just how my students learn best and

adapt my lessons to help them achieve their maximum level of success in my classroom. For

this I will have to research different types of lessons and work with my students to adapt them to

the classroom. I have trouble with coming up with good and thought provoking questions when I

am teaching a lesson, so I will research on better techniques and how to construct more

engaging questions for my students. My growth will be measured through the lesson plans that I

make and by self-reflection of the work, with also student feedback after each unit is completed.

For summative assessments I have researched and come across a scholarly article written by

Julie Edmunds called How to Assess Student Performance in History: Going Beyond Multiple

Choice Tests. This article goes over how there are other ways to test students on the content

that they learn by using oral presentations, essays and open-ended responses, etc. By

implementing these methods, I will be able have students participate more and have them shine

in more areas than just a regular test. Another area that will be looked at is students involvement

in the classroom, most students dont want to participate in class and thus leaves the lesson

very dull because nobody is willing to participate. Looking at the site called the Teaching Center,

I have found that this site has a very extensive plan you can follow to help figure out how to

properly arrange your classroom and the lessons that you have to make the students more

involved and want to participate in the lessons you have planned for them. This site covers

topics such as Shaping the Environment, Planning, Listening and Responding, Links and

References for Increasing Student Participation to help aid you in getting your students more

involved.

Some organizations I will try and use would the National Council for History Education and the

Organization of History Teachers to help aid me while in some of my lessons and when I need

archives for the students to use, but also mold to my teaching style, and adapt it to how my

students learn. The sites also have already made lesson plans, so I will be able to adapt those

lesson to make them work in my classroom for my students.

Some ways I would love to get involved in my school would to attend as many of the

iservices and try the many different activities they have to try and broaden my teaching abilities

and to work with fellow teachers to improve those skills. Some other ways would to either try and

coach or to see if I could be in charge of some clubs on campus as well.

Some of the organizations I mentioned above, I would join them and try and petition to

go some of the trips they offer to help further my historical knowledge so I could bring that real

life knowledge back to my students and share with them the many different things in our world.

When a teacher has real life experiences and has seen many of the sights that
