- The students will be able to complete a menu for two days of lunches.
- The students will be able to create a shopping list of food items.
- The students will be able to use their food pyramid to choose nutritious items.

Assessment (Description/Criterion
- A peer will check the students lunch menus to make sure one item from each
nutritious food group of the pyramid is used.

- Menu templates
- Food Pyramid examples
- Shopping list template
- Personal list of favorite food

- The students will complete their menus individually or with assistance from a
teacher or para.
- The students will exchange menus to be checked

- Directions will be read orally and available in print
- Steps will be chunked and listed on the board
- Directions will be repeated for clarification

Activities/Procedures
ENGAGE
- Students will review the food groups of the pyramid.
- Students will give examples of food that belong in each group.
EXPLORE
- Instruct students to choose two items from each food group they would like to
have for their lunches.
- The students will use a list of their favorite foods to guide their choices.
EXPLAIN
- Hand out the menu template papers to the students.
- Explain that they will be planning their lunch for two days.
- They will choose one of their selections from each food group to include in day
ones lunch menu.
- They will do the same for day two.
ELABORATE
- Students will work independently or with the assistance of a teacher or para to
complete both days lunch menus.
- Remind the students to choose items they would be able to prepare for
themselves.
- Remind the students that they must make relatively healthy choices.
EVALUATE
- When the students have completed the two lunch menus they will exchange
them with a peer.
- The students will make sure their peers menus have one item from each food
group.
- The students will make corrections if needed.
EXTEND
- Hand out shopping list template papers
- Students will use their menus to create a grocery list of items they will need to
complete their meals.
- If time allows students will use their chrome books to type out the shopping list
they have created.
