Reflection from prior lesson:


The previous lesson was a test review and chapter test. The student did very well with the lesson. We did a chapter
walk to review the book materials the played an online review game as a review for the test. She enjoys actively
learning though labs, games, or hands on activities. The student made several good connections to different texts and
chapters in the book. She asked and several questions about the chapter and participated in discussions about the
questions. The student excelled on the test, receiving a 96%.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:


HS-LS2-7: Design, evaluate, and refine a solution for reducing the impacts of human activities on the environment
and biodiversity.

Lesson Objectives:
Students will use information from the text to identify the impact of human activities on the environment with 90%
accuracy.

After reading the text, students will design and evaluate a solution to reduce to impact of human activities on the
environment.

Materials Needed:
-Science Ecology & Environment Ch.3.1 (pg.86)
-Interactive student workbook Ch. 3.1
-Student Laptop
-Edpuzzle Pollution Video
-Paper
-colored pencils
Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:
There is one 10th grade student in the class. The student does science at a 7 th grade level. She is enjoys the class, but
does not like to read. She does best with hands on activities, visuals, and discussions over the text. The student has
little background knowledge about ecology and environmental issues.

A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (10 min)


Getting attention: Show 5 pictures of pollution across the world (google images). Ask the student what
the problem is in the picture and who they think caused it.
Relating to past experience and/or knowledge: How many times when you are on the way home from
school do you see garbage on the side of the road, a farmer burning a pile of waste, or a truck with dark
exhaust?
Creating a need to know: There is a ton of pollution around the world, some that we cant even see.
The pollution is not caused by nature, it is caused by us, humans. Its best to not pollute in the first
Place, but there are still things we can do to stop or reduce solution.
sharing objective, in general terms: Today we are going to learn more about how we impact the
environment. Then we are going to brainstorm some ways that we can stop pollution once and for all.

2. Content Delivery (40 min)


Textbook: Take turns reading the chapter with the student, answering the interactive questions in the book
along the way. After key information or definitions are presented, discuss what they are, when theyve
seen it, or if there are any parts of the word that they recognize.
Watch Pollution (land, Air, and Water Pollution) on Edpuzzle and answer questions in the video. Discuss
the different types of pollution shown and where it came from.
Have the student brainstorm 3 ideas of ways to stop or reduce pollution
o Student draws the best idea on a sheet of paper
o Student writes a short paragraph explaining the picture, what pollution it stops, how it works, and
how it will save the environment.

3. Closure (5 min)
Review of key points/vocabulary words from the chapter
Discussion on how they can protect the environment and stop pollution

B. Assessments Used: Formative


The teacher will observe the student during the reading and interactive book questions. The student will also be
assessed during the discussions over the text, video, and pollution as a whole.

C. Differentiated Instruction
Students will be able to ask the teacher questions if they need assistance during the lesson. If needed, students can
use outside resources to complete the activity. Lastly, students will be able to show their understanding in several
different ways through observations, discussions, and worksheets.
