Eligibility

[For pursuing a career in Engineering Physics, a student must have to fulfil certain
conditions at various education levels. Know these criteria.]

C
andidates who have passed 10+2 with PCM can apply for a 4-year B.Tech
degree course or dual degree courses in Engineering Physics. For pursuing
Engineering Physics, students must have studied Mathematics and Physics
in the qualifying exam i.e. in the Higher Secondary Examination (10+2 level)
or its equivalent. A good understanding of Mathematics & Physics will help the
candidates in understanding engineering fundamentals during the study of Engi-
neering Physics. Undergraduate course in Engineering Physics is run by some top
colleges of India like IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad etc. For
admission to these institutions, students have to qualify JEE Advanced.

5-year dual degree course in Engineering Physics is conducted by IIT Madras,

IIT Bombay and IITBHU Varanasi. For all these dual degree courses, eligibility cri-
teria remain the same as that of the undergraduate level courses.

Postgraduate courses (M.Sc. and M.Tech) in Engineering Physics are also con-
ducted at IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee and IIT BHU Varanasi.
To enrol in these courses, a candidate must possess a graduate degree (B.Sc. or
B.Tech.) in Engineering Physics or related branches.

Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences, The National Centre

for Radio Astrophysics, Indian Institute of Sciences, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Roor-
kee and IIT-BHU Varanasi offer doctoral research programmes in the subject. To
get admission in these courses a student must possess a postgraduate degree and
have to qualify National Eligibility Test (NET).

Course Content

[Engineering Physics uses the classical and modern concepts of physics for better
technological advancements. The course content of this branch is very diversified.]

P
hysics and mathematics are the foundation of Engineering Physics, the
branch which is behind many modern technological developments. Al-
though mathematics is not there in the name of the branch, but emphasis
on this subject is equivalent to as that of physics. Mathematics acts as a
bridge between physics and engineering. Studying Engineering Physics helps a
student in gaining the knowledge of these two worlds (Engineering and Physics)
in a way that one may choose to work in pure science, where the practical aspect
of Engineering Physics program will help. On the other hand, deep knowledge of
physics and mathematics provides an excellent base from which a student can
branch out into many disciplines of engineering and applied sciences.

Deep understanding of fundamentals of physics along with practical knowl-

edge of engineering practice and design imparted during the course curriculum
will help the candidate to grab the right job that requires a broad technical educa-
tion. The Engineering Physics program will develop skills in students to address
new problems in this rapidly changing technological world and to relate funda-
mental of physics for solving technical problems.

Theoretical studies are also combined with hands-on experience with modern
computers, electronics, and lasers that lead to a great and diversified career. The
program will expand the students mindscape and provide a platform to develop
ethical and professional outlooks, communication skills, and the desire for life-long
learning.

career in any industry]

Job Prospects
Knowledge and skills of Engineering Physicists are generally used in the areas
of manufacturing, space research organisations and research laboratories. Pro-
fessionals from the field of engineering physics design and develop mechanical,
electronic and optical equipment systems for use in data acquisition or communi-
cations. In order to pursue an excellent career in Engineering Physics, candidates
will need strong mathematical, technical and computing skills. Study of Engineer-
ing Physics will lead to a career in following areas:
l Industrial research and development
l Applied science
l Advanced technological developments

Candidates from the field of Engineering Physics could work for a high-tech
engineering company, a firm manufacturing technical devices or any company
involved in research and development. Engineering physicists can also opt for a
career in computer technology, laser technology and software engineering. They
could also become scientific entrepreneurs by establishing a company. Govern-
ment organisations like Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Vikram Sarab-
hai Space Centre (VSSC), and National Physical Laboratory hire engineering physi-
cists for research work and in other technical or applied science areas.

International Appeal

[Branch with rapidly growing scope all around the world.]

E
ngineering Physics graduates have very promising opportunities in the
global job market. In the US, about half of the Engineering Physics graduates
are consumed by high-technology firms with excellent salary structures. Ac-
cording to the U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS), projected average job
growth for physicists will be at 10% between 2012 and 2022. According to BLS the
average annual salary for physicists will be $106,840. The other half of the gradu-
ates continues their education and opts for a research programme or they may also
enrol themselves in professional programs like law, medicine and business admin-
istration. Most engineering physics graduates develop careers in industry as staff
engineers or scientists or technical directors; at research and administrative posi-
tions in non-profit and national laboratories; and as professors at major universities.

There are a number of reputed universities in the USA and UK that conduct
courses in Engineering Physics (See Tables below).
