1. GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE

1.1.1 This specification covers the basic requirements for the design of pipe
hangers and supports for the piping system in Olefins Plant.

1.1.2 Detail design of pipe support system according to this specification

including the description of support location shall be carried out for all
piping.

1.1.3 This specification shall generally exclude piping systems furnished as a

regular part of manufacturers standardized equipment or package facilities.

1.2 CODES AND STANDARDS

Design and fabrication of pipe supports shall be accomplished in accordance

with following codes and standards.

ASME B13.1 Chemical Plant and Petroleum Refinery Piping

Other country codes or manufacturers standards can be applied with

Owners approval.

1.4 UNITS

1.4.1 Unless otherwise specified, Metric system and Celsius units shall be applied
as the measurement system for drawings and documents to be submitted.
However, nominal sizes of piping components shall be in accordance with
Inch system ().

1.4.2 All dimensions on drawings shall generally be given in millimeter (mm).

ANNEX C H-109 REV.2 20 FEB 06 PAGE 4 OF 8

2. DESIGN

2.1 GENERAL

2.1.1 Following types of supports shall be applied to piping system.

2.1.2 The support span shall generally be determined so that the stress and
deflection of piping by the weight of piping component, fluid and of
insulation will not exceed one-half (1/2) of the allowable stress at service
temperature and 20 mm respectively.

2.1.3 Pipe supports shall be designed to have enough strength for acting forces
and loads.

2.1.4 When supported pipes are insulated, suitable pipe shoes (cradles) shall be
installed Relationship between insulation thickness and height of shoe
(cradle) shall be in accordance with the following table, unless otherwise
specified on the drawing.

Unit: mm.

Hot Insulation Thickness Height of Shoe

Up to 75 100

76 to 125 150

126 to 175 200

176 to 225 250

226 to 275 300

ANNEX C H-109 REV.2 20 FEB 06 PAGE 5 OF 8

Unit: mm.

Cold Insulation Thickness Height of Cradle

Up to 50 50

51 to 100 100

101 to 150 150

151 to 200 200

201 to 250 250

251 to 300 300

2.1.5 Uninsulated piping and 1 and smaller piping to be applied not insulation
may rest directly on the supporting members.
However, cold insulated lines shall not rest directly on the supporting
members regardless of size.

ANNEX C H-109 REV.2 20 FEB 06 PAGE 6 OF 8

2.1.6 Insulated or uninsulated line, with operating temperature of 120 oC and
above, shall not be rest directly on concrete materials.

2.1.7 When the installation of pipe shoes or of trunnions are required for thin wall
pipes, or where large diameter with thin wall pipes rest directly on the
narrow members, adequate methods such as welding reinforcement pads
shall be applied for the purpose of reducing stresses.

2.1.8 Piping sections requiring frequent dismantling shall be provided with

adequate supports taking account of easy dismantling.

2.1.9 Supports for the piping connected to the nozzles on compressors / turbines
shall, as a rule, be adjustable types for easy alignment.

2.1.10 Spring hanger supports shall be provided to piping moving vertically, where
rigid support can not be allowed.

2.1.11 The location and type of support for piping shall be shown on the piping
arrangement drawing by symbols.

2.1.12 Welds of support components shall generally be 6 mm continuous fillet

unless otherwise specified on the drawing.

2.1.13 Structural steel support shall not be directly welded to SS or Ni-Cr alloy
piping.

2.2 MATERIALS

2.2.1 The materials for support components shall generally be ASTM A36 and /
or equivalent material, but shall be similar steel grade material as that of
supported pipe where they are directly welded to the pipe.

2.2.2 All bolts and nuts shall be of hexagon type conforming to ISO 4016 and
ISO 4034 respectively, with the thread as follows;

(1). Class of finish of Thread : C in ISO 4759/1

(2). Accuracy of Screw Thread : Coarse in ISO 965/1
(3). Basic Profile : ISO 68
(4). General Plan : ISO 261
(5). Basic Dimension : ISO 724
