Happy Birthday Redwood City! 2017 brings with it
Redwood Citys Sesquicentennial (try saying that three times
fast) a celebration of our 150th Birthday. A committee of
dedicated community volunteers has been working tirelessly
on planning a wonderful array of events to celebrate and
I asked them to guest write this months PILOT article.
I hope youll find a way to celebrate with us.
We are excited to share Redwood Citys 150th anniversary
plans. Our committee includes Vice-Mayor Ian Bain,
Council Members Janet Borgens and Diane Howard, City
Sta Chris Beth, Jeanne Sullivan and Derek Wolfgram,
Community Members Barbara Britschgi, Jim Cliord,
Pamela Estes, Charles Jany, Keith Kadera, Georgi LaBerge,
Janet McGovern, Karen Seiko-Peterson, Nancy Radclie,
Ernie Schmidt, Bob Slusser, Paula Uccelli, Marian Wydo,
and Judy Yoakum. A host of volunteers, and business and
community contributors are working to ensure that this is
a year to be remembered. Our goal is to bring our
community together to discover our history, honor our
diversity and explore our neighborhoods.
Upcoming events include: Where Did You Go to School
speaker series at the main library; photo share Redwood
City en and Now at various locations; Restaurant Week
and a special event on the Square April 22nd. e 2nd annual
STEAM FESTIVAL (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art
& Math) on April 29th is a definite attraction for children
and families! (See Page 17 for additional details.) May is
Historic Preservation Month and numerous tours and
events are planned for you to learn about our history
including Mothers Stories on May 6th and four other tours
over the next six months at the Historic Union Cemetery.
On May 20th from noon to 9pm the signature sesquicentennial
event will take place at Courthouse Square, the San Mateo
County History Museum, and

MAGICAL BRIDGE PLAYGROUND
is coming to Redwood City!
Magical Bridge is a playground for everyone and everyBODY,
regardless of ability, disability, size or age and addresses the
play needs of children and adults living with autism, physical
and cognitive dierences, hearing and visual impairments,
and even the aging population. Both typical and special
needs kids and adults play side by side, as never before. e
real MAGIC is that when everyone truly plays together,
barriers are eliminated, and dierences disappear.
Heralded as the nations most innovative and inclusive
playground, Magical Bridge Foundation selected Redwood
City as their 2nd playground project, and is currently working
with foundations and businesses to fully fund the project.
e mission of the Magical Bridge Foundation is to make sure
that every child has a place to play where they feel equal,
included, and connected to their family, friends and
community. e Magical Bridge Playground in Redwood
City is a critical next step to show that we can create not just
a magical play space but a culture of inclusivity within a highly
diverse community. e learnings from this project will be
vital to bringing the magic of play to other communities
throughout the bay area and the country. e location for
this playground will be at Red Morton Park, replacing the
aging playground on the Valota Road side of the Park.
e Foundation still needs to raise approximately $500,000
of the estimated $3.6M project costs before construction

Hello Redwood Shores Community,
It feels like springtime in our schools, and much is happening
with facilities, curriculum, and program development.
FACILITIES Were beginning our facilities expansion project
at Sandpiper, and wed like to thank Redwood City for their
partnership, the neighbors for their patience, and the
broader community for their support of school facilities
bond Measure I in 2014 that is funding this construction.
e project will provide a local middle grades option for
families and improve overall trac into and out of the
Shores by reducing the number of students commuting to
Ralston Middle School. Additionally, Redwood Shores
Elementary has a brand new grass field! See photo. >
e field is expected to be available for student use in early
April. e company that installed the field will maintain it
for the next 18 months to ensure that this community
resource is cared for properly while it is most vulnerable.
CURRICULUM Last month, I shared that we have new
science academic standards. Although new science textbooks
are not yet available, our teachers are learning about the new
standards, and the State is beginning to develop an
assessment to measure students learning. If you are curious,
I encourage you to take a look at sample test questions. To
do this, search for California smarter balanced practice test
on the Internet. Click take the practice test and log in as
a guest 5th or 8th grade student. Good luck!
PROGRAM DEvELOPMEnT Fifty 5th grade students from
the Shores have enrolled in the new 6th grade program at
Sandpiper for 2017-18. Forty-five percent of Sandpiper 5th
grade families decided to stay at the school rather than
attend Ralston Middle School, which is a great turnout for
the programs first year. Over the next two years we will add
grades 7 and 8, and over time we expect the school to
mature with 60 students each in grades 6-8. We are also
adding an assistant principal position at Sandpiper to help
Principal Tami Moore with program, sta, schedule, and
curriculum development.

What You Need to Know About
the Federal Reserve

As was hotly anticipated, the Federal Reserve meeting in
mid-December 2016 confirmed my predictionsmortgage
rates are on the rise.
e good news is that we were starting from nearly the
historical lowest-ever mortgage rates. at makes this pill
an easier one to swallowfor now.
e Feds dot plot implies three rate hikes in 2017but
fortunately, the first Fed meeting of the year in February had
a unanimous vote to maintain the current target range.
Since then, e WSJ reports that more than half of
economists surveyed expect the Federal Reserve to raise
benchmark rates at their June meeting. CNBC reported
shortly afterward to anticipate a May hike, at the latest.

So, what do higher interest rates mean for the typical
mid-Peninsula real estate transaction?
For buyers, the bottom line is that increased mortgage rates
translate to higher monthly payments.
If you are considering buying a mid-Peninsula home in
2017, the time to act is now. Find an educated agent who
can speak to micro- and macro-level economic trends, get
pre-qualified with a lender, and start your home search in
the first quarter.
For sellers, increasing mortgage rates mean a few things.
Demand on the mid-Peninsula, for the foreseeable future,
will always remain on the higher side. at said, buyer
fatigue is real and will start to play out in pockets, leading
to a decrease in demand.
Decreased demand means reduced trac through open
houses, fewer oers, and ultimately, a lower sale price.

A Seasonal Shores Symphony

Especially during early-morning hours, sounds you hear in
the Shores are signaling seasonal change. After a blustery
Winter like the one weve just had, when you hear lilting,
light sounds of the birds of Spring, you know that a harsh
Winter just may be giving way to a gentle Spring. It's these
sounds along with other signs... the start of Daylight Saving
Time, for example, Spring training baseball and blooming
wildflowers.
e birds you hear during Winter months sound kind of
guttural compared to the lighter, tweeting, sing-song sounds
of Spring birds. When it's warm enough to spend time
outside some evenings, you hear a symphony of sounds,
especially late evening when there's hardly any trac, when
people are home after being out and about during the day,
when everything is still. at's when you occasionally hear
a freight train rolling along the Peninsula tracks that freight
trains share, at times, with Caltrain.
e sound freight trains make as they approach crossings is
dierent. Freight train whistles make a soulful kind of
sound. e sound commuter trains make sometimes is more
urgent. It's a sound that seems to say... Hey! We have people
on board scurrying from here to there. at's why a
commuter train's whistle seems more staccato.

presents STEAM Fest 2.0
STEAM Fest 2.0 aims to inspire San Mateo County's diverse
youth to see themselves as scientists, artists, creators and
inventors. is FREE county festival to introduce kids and
adults alike to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Arts and Math) through fun experiments, presentations,
speakers, and demonstrations will be held Saturday, April 29th
from 11am to 3pm, on Courthouse Square (2200 Broadway)
in Redwood City in conjunction with Maritime Day.
Last years STEM Festival demonstrated an overwhelming
community interest in opportunities for all youth and
families in Redwood City and San Mateo County to
participate in STEM activities stated Redwood City Library
Director Derek Wolfgram, and I imagine that the addition
of Arts to STEAM Fest 2.0 will attract even more visitors.
Redwood City Public Library is currently focused on creating
residents of all income levels, and delivering access to quality
educational opportunities for all children, and the Redwood
City Library Foundation STEAM Fest 2.0 dovetails perfectly
with each of these those goals.
STEAM skills are important. In the decade ending in 2020,
United States employers will create about 2.1 million jobs
in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) as
well as the professional sector, according to the Federal
Bureau of Labor Statistics. 80% of future jobs will require
STEM literacy. Exposure to everyday applications will plant
the seed for students to pursue more advanced degrees in
STEM careers so that the U.S. can then fill the demand for
these jobs with local employees, helping these children
remain employed. Adding Arts to STEM (thus, STEAM)
allows these disciplines to become more accessible for
individuals whose exposure is either limited or non-existent.

(How a Connecticut Yankee embraced California Cuisine)
Annual April Palm Springs Fling!

We start dreaming of deserts in January when we make
our flight arrangements for our annual trek to Palm
Springs each April. This rendezvous began many years
back with the brilliant idea to escape the San Francisco
rainy season and seek adventure and warmth in the high
desert. The first year was a true silly road trip undertaken
by two friends in a trusty 1958 Volvo with the passenger
door held closed by a shock cord, a water hose held
together with an improvised inner tube/clamp repair, and
included camping out along Route 5 in the San Joaquin
Valley behind a gas station at what is now The Apricot
Tree, eventually chugging over the Grapevine and finally
arriving in Palm Springs. From that point forward it
morphed into a woman-only spring ritual that included
Wilson College buddies, first cousins, a bankruptcy
attorney, a ballet teacher and a construction risk
specialist/insurance broker - yours truly! It has now
endured through marriages, children, divorces,
remarriage, grandchildren, and all the many challenges
that life continues to bestow upon us. No one can quite
remember just how many years we have been running
away to the desert for a week of friendship, laughter,
conversation, tears, and perfecting the art of doing
nothing! Its akin to a continuous pajama and pool party
all in one.
Actually, we have taken some fabulous hikes in Joshua
Tree National Park, Indian Canyons (Palm Canyon,
Andreas Canyon, Murray Canyon), Mt. San Jacinto State
Park & Wilderness Area (at the top of the Palm Springs
Aerial Tramway) through still snowy forests, shopped until
we dropped along North Palm Canyon or The Gardens
on El Paseo in Palm Desert, and even enjoyed a tour of
Sunnylands, the Annenbergs mid-century modern estate
in Rancho Mirage. Usually, however, we enjoy just
hanging around the pool and gardens in the VRBO large
mid-century home where we now stay, and planning our
menu for the evening. We rarely dine out, as each dinner
becomes a delight to plan, prepare and serve. (Of course,
at the beginning of our trip, we race through the local
Costco on a costly mad-cap shopping spree!) One of my
very best girlfriends and I usually do the lions share of the
cooking, and this dish is always requested and
traditionally served when everyone is there for dinner on
a particular evening.

FOR ThE SAUCE:
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
4 Stalks Celery, chopped
3 Onions, chopped
2 Teaspoons Marjoram
1 Teaspoon yme
1 Teaspoon Rosemary (diced)
2 Bay Leaves
2 Teaspoons Dried Porcini Powder (you can take several
dried porcini mushrooms and grind them in a coee grinder
or Cuisinart if unable to find the dried spice powder)
8 Cloves Garlic, pressed
2 28 Ounce Cans Chopped Tomatoes with Juice
Salt & Pepper to taste
Put the olive oil in a large, heavy, ovenproof pot over a medium
flame. Add celery, onions, herbs, porcini powder and garlic.
Saut until vegetables are softened and lightly caramelized.
Add the tomatoes and juice and bring up to a simmer.
ADD ThE FOLLOWInG:
3 Bell Peppers, cut in bite-sized chunks
1 lb. Mushrooms (cut in halves or quarters, depending on size)
1 Can Black or Kalamata olives, pitted and drained
Let the sauce come back up to a simmer, turn heat to low
and cook for at least a half an hour to cook peppers and
mushrooms and blend flavors. Salt and pepper to taste.
FOR ThE ChICkEn:
12 16 chicken thighs (or a mix of breasts and thighs)
Saut chicken pieces, skin side down, until brown. Turn
pieces over and brown other side. Put chicken in large
roasting pan, in one layer (skin side up), and pour some sauce
over the top. Bake in 350 oven for an hour or until done
(cover with aluminum foil for the first 30 minutes then
remove). Serve with the rest of the sauce on the side with pasta
of your choice. We prefer spaghetti with olive oil, parsley, and
garlic. But it also goes well with rice. (is makes enough
sauce for about 8 people, so you can cut the amounts or freeze
the sauce for future use. We've never had any to freeze all
the leftovers disappear.) Enjoy with your friends and/or
family, a large green salad and nice glass of your favorite wine!

A recipe that will enlighten your digestive fire, uplift and balance
your body, mind & spirit! (Recipe contributed by Teena Arora.)
kITChARDI basmati rice & yellow split lentils (moongi dal)
is dish is known as a stew, porridge, or soup of basmati rice,
pulses (lentils), ghee, and digestive & healing spices simmered
together. Most common for breakfast or dinner. It's a complete
protein that is nourishing and easy to digest.
It's also a perfect dish for a detox and cleanse in Spring!
InGREDIEnTS
cup moongi dal (yellow split lentils)
cup basmati rice
1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
4 - 5 cups water
1-2 tsp ghee (clarified butter)
1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 inch piece ginger root;
chopped or grated (Vata or Kapha)
- tsp ground or fresh turmeric
1 pinch asafetida (hing)
1 tsp Currysutra garam masala (garnish)
tsp ground (fresh cracked) black pepper (garnish)
- cup fresh cilantro leaves; chopped (optional)
METhOD
Rinse lentils and rice separately 5-6 times until water is not as cloudy.
In a pot, add 5 cups water, rice, lentils, and salt. Bring to a boil.
en, reduce heat to medium and cook for approximately 20-25
minutes, slightly covered.
Cook the dal (lentils) and rice until it becomes soft and tender.
Stir occasionally. en, turn o the heat.
Now, in a separate skillet, heat 1-2 tsp of ghee on medium heat.
Add cumin seeds, ginger, and turmeric.
en, add asafetida (hing). Stir together to release their flavors.
Turn o heat.
Add this mixture into the rice and lentil mixture; kitchardi.
Add ground/fresh cracked black pepper. Stir well.
Garnish with garam masala and fresh cilantro, if desired.

Redwood Shores Tennis Club held its annual MEMbERShIP MAnIA
on Saturday, March 18th. Its an event designed to let newcomers
find out what the club is about and to meet and play with some
current members. Despite overcast skies and a last-minute change
of location, there was a good turnout. e city had assured us
that Shorebird Courts (the usual venue) would be ready in time
for this event, but by March 16th it was evident that wed need to
change the site. Emails went out to members and notices were
placed on posters. It seems that everyone got the message to go
to Marlin Park instead, and somewhere between 25 and 30 people
attended. Players rotated informally onto the courts and enjoyed
coee, pastries and conversation in the intervals between play.

Our March 25th tournament fell after the deadline for this issue,
so look for the results of that event in the May PILOT. Our next
tournament, featuring a mixed scramble format, will be held on

A Seasonal Shores Symphony

e evening train sounds add to the symphonic mix of lilting and
tweeting and other nature sounds as well. Once in a while, you can
hear the dramatic, soaring notes of a hawk. And sounds you might
associate with those big, graceful birds with long necks that you
sometimes see on lagoon embankments. ose birds with necks not
quite as long as a fly fishing rod, but long enough to pluck some
nourishment from the lagoon water. e sound they make, a quick,
almost inaudible splash, is a subtle note in the symphony.
Some sounds you can't always pinpoint. Raccoons, for example.
Is that a barking sound, but not quite like a barking dog? ere
are lots of sounds in the Shores, some gentle and lilting, some
soulful, some urgent and staccato. Take a listen!

Take a few extra seconds to get where youre going and slow
down on your way in or out of the Shores. Keep your eyes
on your surroundings and the road, not whatever
technology might distract you.
Also LOOk OUT FOR yOUR nEIGhbORS!
While we live in one of the Bay Areas safest communities,
it bears repeating again and again that we need to take an
active role in watching out for each other and in doing our
part to KEEP the Shores a safe place to live.
So please, LOCK UP! Lets not make it so easy for those
who would take advantage in our community. Lock your
cars, even in your driveways. Lock your home (front and
back doors), even if you only step out for a few minutes.
And dont encourage a break-in by leaving valuables like cell
phones, laptops, iPads, and GPS units in plain sight, either
in your car or at home.
If something doesnt look right, call the
Redwood City Police Department at 369-3333.
If its an emergency, you can always call 9-1-1 !
If you SEE something, SAY something! Dont hesitate to
call and let the police check out anything that looks
suspicious or out of the ordinary.
