PROCEDURE

1. Firstly the Hysys application was started up.

2. Then open a new file, the fluid package and also the component lists was selected.
3. The peng robinson fluid package was selected.
4. Ammonia and water was added as the component lists.
5. The simulation was selected.

6. The first stream was drawn. Then all the data related to the stream 1 was tabulated.
7. Then a cooler was selected from the simulation panel and all of the parameter was
tabulated in the system.
8. The valve is then selected from the simulation panel. The all of the data was tabulated.

9. A separator was selected from the simulation panel and all of the data required was
tabulated.
10. The final set up.

DISCUSSIONS

The objective of this experiment was to understand the usage of the condenser, valve and
separation process. The process of this experiment are firstly a mixture of ammonia and
water at 143.6 oC and 1724 kPa containing 80 wt% ammonia is passed through a condenser
at a flow rate of 4536 kgmole/hr. Heat is removed at a rate of 1700 kW. The pressure at the
outlet stream is then reduced to 1034 kPa by using a valve. The mixture is then fed into a
flash vessel to separate the vapor and liquid. The property package that used in this
experiment are the Advance Peng-Robinson property package.

Based on the result gained from this experiment, the reason why a valve was required is to
expand the pressure of effluent of the condenser, since the feed stream is in a mixture of
liquid and gases. Thus, it is suitable to use valve to substitute the function of expander in this
case. The outlet pressure of the valve are 1034 kPa since it is the required pressure needed
in expanding before the mixture of ammonia and water enters flash vessel.
Since the objective of this experiment are to understand the usage of the condenser,
valve and separator, below are the Purpose of each equipment as well as its working
principle.
1. Purpose of Equipment:
Condenser : to cool down the temperature of the stream input.
Valve : to produce and control pressure drop in the stream input.
Separator :to separate the components in a mixture.

2. Working Principle:
Condenser : use cooling process
Valve : use throttling process
Separator : use separation process
