Praise and Worship

Contrary to popular belief, praise and worship is not solely based on the music that we
hear. Praise and worship is based on our relationship with God on who God is; not solely
on the things that He has done. Most people today base their relationship on God based
off the things that God can do for them. The children of Israel knew God from their
knowledge of their experiences, and Moses knew His ways. Moses spent time in the
presence of God, by him (Moses) speaking, listening, bowing, and praying.

Praise and Worship is a vehicle to bring people into the awareness of the presence of the
Lord and establishes the God’s kingdom power in the earth. True worship focuses on the
divine Godhead; Father, Son, and Holy Ghost (Rev. 19:10). Bible-based praise and
worship is not entertainment based or motivated, but it is worship to the Lord. “God is a
Spirit: and they must worship Him in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). Reality, integrity,
sincerity, accuracy and dependability are some of the words that describe the character of
our worship to God.

Praise
Why Praise God?

Psalm 150: 6 – Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.

Psalm 22:3 – But thou art holy, O that inhabitest the praises of Israel”. Where God’s
people are praising Him is where His throne is established His kingdom power will
manifest. The word inhabit is the Hebrew word yawshab which means to sit down,
remain, settle, or marry. God will not just manifest His presence when we praise Him, but
He has partnered with us, abides in us.

1 Chron. 23:30- “They were also to stand every morning to thank and praise the Lord and
the same in the evening….. One of the Levites duties was to minister into the Lord.

What is Praise?
Praise – boast about with words and singing. Praise comes from the Hebrew word halal
which means praise, thank, rejoice, boast about someone. Halal is the root of hallelujah
by which hallelujah is a command to “Praise the Lord” or You must all praise
YAH(God).

Types of Praise
Shabach – to commend, praise, adore; to glory in something.
Psalm 63:3,4 – Because thy loving kindness is better than life, my lips praise thee. Thus I
will bless thee while I live: I will lift my hands in thy name. Praise is an act of one’s own
will, it should not be based solely off feelings, emotions, or circumstances; but rather the
believer’s will. In this particular verse the psalmist uses their lips and hands as primary
instruments of praise.
Praise and Worship
Tehilah – celebration, lauding, exaltation. The praise or exaltation of God; songs of
admiration.
Psalm 100:4 – Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise: be
thankful unto him and bless his name. This scripture sets forth the attitude of the heart
and mind by which the worshipper is to approach the throne of God.

Worship
What is Worship?

Webster’s dictionary defines worship as worthiness, respect, or reverence paid to a divine

being. This is man’s response to nature, action, and glory of God.

Shachah-(Hebrew) To bow, to stoop, to bow down before someone as act of submission

or reverence.

Proskuneo –(Greek) To prostrate oneself, bow down, do obeisance, show reverence,

homage, adore. Our worship should be only for our Lord and Savior(Rev. 4-10,11).

The very act of worship is a response to the object of your worship. Worship is
more of engagement than stirring the emotion. We worship God for who He is, not
if we feel like it. Worship is the natural, normal response to God the Creator from
the heart of a grateful creature.

- Worship reflects our lifestyle.

The bible tells us that the heart will be where our treasure is (Luke 12:34). Where is your
trust and confidence? Who is your trust and confidence? Our treasure represents that
which causes us to feel more secure and beneficial to us. The focus of the heart is the
focus of our worship. We worship that which makes us feel secure. If our car makes us
feel secure; we put time and attention in the car. Our houses, our job, so on…..

Romans 12:1 also speaks to our lives as worship. We should present our lives as worship
to God which is our spiritual act of worship.

Why do we…..

Raising our hands

Raising our hands is both from the bible and spontaneous. 1Tim. 2:8 – I want men
everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger and dispute.
Praise and Worship

Clapping Hands

We clap our hands as another way of entering into worship. Psalm 47:1 - Oh clap your
hands, all you peoples! Shout to the Lord with a voice of triumph!
