Construction notes:
Familiarize yourself with components using the included parts list.
TIP: Not sure what part is what? We recommend picking up almost any fairly recent copy of
the ARRL Handbook. The GQRP web site also has several good articles on component
identification.
Some parts may be of slightly different values, 33pF may be used in placed of 30pF
Some parts may be of higher tolerance values such as 1% resistors. In many cases we will list
the color bands of both tolerances.
It is advisable to check capacitors as some have noted bad disc capacitors in their builds.
It is advisable to use a DMM to check 1% resistors as it can be hard to differentiate some of the
colors.
The PCB top side contains most of the silk screen component legends. The bottom will
typically contain board identificatin and version.
Component Polarity:
Electrolytic Capacitors The Shadded portion on the PCB silkscreen is the Negative lead
Diodes Pleace a hairpin bend on the banded end of all diodes. Insert the non-banded end
in the circle portion of each diode placement.
Transistors The flat side of the TO-92 transistors align with the LONG-edge side of the
transistor silkscreen. The heatsink side of the arger TO-220 style transistors align with the
thick banded end on the silkscreen.
All parts are mounted on the top side of the PCB except any mods mentioned.
Solder and trim the excess leads after installing each component. Be carefull when trimming
leads and use eye protection! Some of the short header leads can fly into your eyes!
TIP: Not sure how to solder? There are many excellent videos on the internet. Check out
sites such as Sparkfun.com, adafruit.com, and electronics123.com
**** There are many variations of the parts list, layout, schematic, and PCB itself. Even
though the references may change, in a majority of cases the relative position of the
components are the same. When all else fails go by the relative position, these instructions
are based on this technique.

3. Apply 12V power to the board. Check the following points against ground with a DMM:
[ ] 12V at U3 pin 8 (NE5532 IC)
[ ] 5V at U5 pin 16 (MAX232IC)
[ ] Remove power from the board.

4. Serial Interface - Install the following components:
[ ] C26, C27, C29 Capacitor Disc .1uF 104
C30
8. Micro-Controller Testing - Apply 12V power to the board. Check the following:
[ ] The GREEN Led will be lit.
[ ] Plug a pair of headphones into the PHONES connector and an Iambic key into the KEY
connector. Note: A straight key can be used by using a mono plug or by using a stereo plug
and grounding the ring (middle) connection. However, both rockmites seem to not engage
in straight key mode.
[ ] Pressing the DAH and DIT keys will create a dot or dash tone into the headphones. You
may need to adjust the volume control W2 to hear the tone. Note: The keys to not auto-
repeat however pressing both at the same time will produce an "A" (dit-dah) or "N" (dah-
dit) depending on which key was pressed first.
[ ] While pressing the DAH and DIT keys the GREEN led should turn off and RED led
should turn on to transmit the DAH or DIT.
[ ] Each press and hold of SW1 will increase the side tone frequency.
[ ] Each press and hold of SW2 will decrease the side tone frequency.
[ ] Pressing SW3 will transmit an "I and E". (Memory Playback)
[ ] Each press of SW4 will produce a side-tone only of an "E" and slow the keyer down.
[ ] Each press of SW5 will produce a side-tone only of an "E" and speed the keyer up.
[ ] The serial port and software may also be tested at this point. However, this document
will not cover the installation and operation of the software. NOTE: Some versions of the
*** CPU and Serial Interface Troubleshooting tips Using an o-scope check U4 pins 4 and
5 for an 11.0592MHz sine wave. Pin 4 is 4.75Vp-p and Pin 5 is 3.4Vp-p. Check pin 2 on
the serial port for a 15V pulse train when pressing the SW3 button. This same pulse train
will be seen with 5V pulses at U4 pin 3. Using the o-scope 500uS/div setting, pulse widths
may vary from 110uS (short pulse) to 200uS (long pulse) in duration. BAD chips will show
no clock at pins 4&5 and U5-14 pulses of 220uS and 440uS.
11.Oscillator Testing
[ ] Apply 12V to the board. A signal on the crystal frequency (7.023MHz) should be heard
using a receiver and a small piece of wire near the board. A 3.3Vp-p 5Vp-p signal can be
seen with an oscilloscope at Q1-Emitter.
[ ] Press SW3 (Memory Play) or use a key to key the transmitter. Using a local receiver you
should be able to hear the frequency shift when going from transmit to receive and back. A
slight amplitude shift can be seen on an oscilloscope at Q1-Emitter.
Q1 DC Voltages:
Emitter: 3.8-4.1V
Base: 3.6-3.8V
Collector: 12V
[ ] Disconnect power from the board.
[ ] J1 BNC female
[ ] You should hear the receiver working. W1 can be used as a RIT control. You may need
to place W2 all the way clockwise.
[ ] Tranmit with the Iabmic key, there should be at least 4.5W output.
[ ] Use the push button switches in step 8 to change side tone and speed.
