Introduction:
Hi guys! My name is Emily and I am a Dental Hygiene Student.
Im here to talk to you today about our teeth. To start, raise your
hand if you know what a dental hygienist does. A hygienist is the
person who makes your teeth clean before the dentist comes to
check if your teeth are healthy and count how many teeth you
have. Hygienists also help teach people how to take care of their
teeth and stay healthy. Since you all have nice smiles and
healthy teeth I want to make sure you all know how to keep your
teeth shiny and healthy! So, today we are going to talk about
why teeth are important, what teeth do, some foods we can eat
to keep them healthy, and some things that can make our teeth
sad.
Name tags (floor seats)

Lesson Body:
1) Why are our teeth important? Raise your hand if you can tell me
something that our teeth do. (Show posters of what we use our
teeth for. Use posters as hints first)

a) Teeth help us smile, talk, eat, and they hold a place for our
permanent teeth.
b) We would look pretty silly without teeth when we smile
wouldnt we?
c) It would be hard to talk without teeth wouldnt it?
1) We are all going to say Hello at the same time and I
want you guys to tell me what your tongue touches when
you say it. 1, 2, 3, Hello
2) Now we are going to say Friends together and you
guys tell me what your teeth touch. 1,2,3, Friends
d) And did you all know that your teeth are holding spots for your
permanent teeth that you will have forever? Our baby teeth do a
good job of saving spots!
e) How would we eat without teeth? Each of our teeth has
different jobs too. Incisors (cut), Canines (tear), Molars (grind).

Game pretending to be teeth.

We are all going to be super quite and stand in 2 lines of ten and
one person in the middle.
I need everyone to be good pretenders!
Everyone close your eyes and say I am a baby tooth. Person in
middle, I am a tongue. When you open your eyes you are all
going to be teeth and a tongue!
One side is the top teeth and the other side is the bottom teeth.
Everyone wave at the other teeth!
Our person is hungry and they want to eat an apple so we have
to help! When I say chew we are going to clap hands with the
tooth across from you 3 times!
And the tongue is going to wiggle in the middle. CHEW, CHEW,
CHEW!
Another job the teeth have is to help us talk, so everyone say
TEETH! Ready? TEETH! (wave,chew)
The next job is they help us smile, let me see all of your big
smiles (wave,chew,talk)
Our teeth have one more job. Our baby teeth save a space for
new big teeth growing underneath. Everyone cross your arms
and save a spot for the tooth growing under you! (wave, chew,
talk, smile, save spot)
Count Teeth (tongue claps hands with everyone)
Tongue (licks all the teeth, high fives all the teeth)
Close eyes. We are no longer teeth, we are going back to
kindergarteners! Quietly open eyes and sit back in your spot.

2) What do our teeth chew? Food right?

a) Here we have sad tooth and happy tooth! (Posters)
b) We are going to talk about the foods that make our teeth
happy and foods that make our teeth sad.
c) Calcium makes our teeth strong. Calcium is in milk, cheese,
yogurt, and leafy greens. Crunchy foods like vegetables are
really good for your teeth because they rub against your teeth,
which rub off food and plaque when you chew. Meat, vegetables,
fruits, and foods with calcium are all really good for your teeth.
Drinking water throughout the day also helps rinse your teeth
and keep them clean!
d) Who can tell me foods that make your teeth sad?
e) Sugary foods like candy, brownies, pop, and cakes will make
our teeth sad. These sticky and sugary foods sit on our teeth and
make our teeth dirty for a long time. If we let our teeth stay dirty
from sugary foods we can get cavities! Having these sometimes
foods all the time isnt just bad for your teeth its not healthy for
your body either.
e) Im going to hold up some foods and I want you all to tell me if
they are healthy foods or sometimes foods.
f) I am going to give each of you a food to put on the tooth
posters.
3) Everyone here likes sugary treats right? Do you know what else likes
sugar? The germs on our teeth like sugar.
a) Germs on our teeth are called plaque, but we cant see it can
we? (Plaque poster) Spell and sound out plaque.

b) When we dont brush the germs/plaque off our teeth they can
make our teeth sick.
c) When we eat sugar it feeds the germs, and the germs make
acid that sits on your teeth. That acid makes the cavities or
holes in your teeth.
d) If a cavity gets really deep it can give you a toothache!
d) What are some of your favorite foods that would feed the
germs and cause cavities? What are some things you could eat
that would make your teeth happy?

4) Coloring page
a) Song on paper
b) Name on top/ Spell plaque on back
c) Circle the good foods/ foods that will make your teeth happy in
green
d) Circle all the foods that would make your teeth sad in red.
e) You guys can color the happy tooth and sad tooth while I come
around and take pictures of your smiles

5) Closure
Great job class! Lets review what we learned today.
a) The types of teeth we have
b) What our teeth help us do
c) Healthy foods vs. sometimes foods
d) Plaque and cavities

Im sending you each home with activity sheets for you to do at home
with your parents! I hope you will choose good foods for snack time
that will keep your teeth healthy and clean. Thank you all for listening
and being such good helpers today! I will see you guys later to talk
more about how we keep our teeth clean!
