Programming Purpose:
The toddlers have been doing many sensory and gross motor activities, due to this, I have chosen an activity
to enhance their fine motor skills. This activity requires the toddlers to use their hands to thread different
shaped objects through a large string. Each object is a different size, shape and colour.
Objective
Children will enhance their fine motor skills by lacing small objects onto a thread. The ELECT shows that
sensory motor integration (5.3), entails children using their hand-eye coordination to complete tasks such
as stringing beads on a pipe cleaner. In this case, they will be stringing small objects onto a thread.
Furthermore, the toddlers will be able to alter the activity by sorting (4.9) the different coloured objects.
They can also be sorted by size and shape. Lastly the toddlers can use (4.7) symbolic thought to pretend
that they are creating a necklace, bracelet, crown etc.
Materials:
After circle time, the toddlers go to the creative table to either do an activity or to read a book. I will be
sitting with the toddlers and explaining to them that we will be creating necklaces using lace and objects.
To begin, I will ask each toddler to take a lace and then place the bin of the different objects in the middle.
Create hand movements with your hand and ask the toddlers to imitate you; this is to show them that they
are about to use their hands for the activity.
Body (Content)
Closing (Ending)
Ask the toddlers if they would like to help me clean up. Ask them to take turns adding their completed lace
into the bin.
Transition
After cleaning, I will put on the upbeat music the daycare uses to transition the toddlers to clean up and
then get ready for lunch.
