World War I:

Modern Warfare
By: Niklas Baldis

Poison Gas

Germany began using poison gas that blinded, choked,

burned and blistered, or a combination to deter the
enemy. Poison gas revolutionized warfare by creating
an effect similar to a smoke screen where the enemy
backs off from their attack when they see a cloud of
poisonous gas. If the enemy dares to push through
without proper gear or if they are trapped in a confined
space they will probably die from choking before a
bullet can be fired.
Zeppelins

The Germans were once again the first to create a new

technological asset in 1915. Zeppelins were large, gas-filled
balloons that bombed the English coast. The Zeppelin
revolutionized warfare by forcing the enemy to not only look
forward at the enemy but now up to make sure they are not
being bombed.
U-

Boats
The submarine was created by Germany to do extreme
amounts of damage to Allied ships carrying supplies to
Britain. The U-boat or submarine revolutionized warfare by
taking some engagements below the water in a stealthy way.
There was no way to truly know of your enemys position,
but you could be attacked by them.

Convoys

The Allies began to use convoys as a way to deter attacks on

merchant ships carrying supplies. Warships surrounded the
merchant ships to protect and return fire if an enemy were to
attack. Convoys revolutionized warfare because supplies
were more likely to reach their destination if twenty warships
protected ten merchant ships.
Automatic Machine Gun

The Germans were the first to use automatic machine guns in

WWI. Automatic machine guns gave the user a constant
stream of bullets, allowing them to kill entire squads of men
without assistance from allies.. The automatic machine gun
revolutionized warfare because it gave a single soldier much
more firepower to be more effective on the battlefield.

Airplane The French were the first to use airplanes with machine guns
to kill enemy recon planes. Airplanes in WWI were first only
used for reconnaissance on enemy positions but as time
passed the French put machine guns on the plane to take
down enemy planes they encounter. The airplane
revolutionized warfare by giving a feeling similar to the
Zeppelin in which the enemy has to not only focus on the
battle in front of them but also focus on not being mowed
down by a machine gun from above.
