Assignment Brief

Analysis.

Initially, you will choose two music videos to analyse. Both videos should be of
different musical genre and preferably of different visual styles.

Having chosen your videos, you will need to make an in-depth analysis of:

a) The purpose of Music Videos in general (with reference to your choices

and of the wider context) and
b) The styles and conventions of your chosen videos, making comparisons
and highlighting contrasts between them.

This analysis can be submitted in a written format of your choosing (Essay,

PowerPoint slideshow, etc.)

Start with:

The purposes of Music Video:

o In this section you can provide a brief history of music videos and why
they came into being (see PowerPoint presentation on eStudy for
History and Timeline).
o You also need to discuss how Music Videos represent an extension of
income for bands & record companies (when they get played, they get
paid).
o Talk about how Music Videos can extend the outlets through which the
music can be heard (dedicated music channels, direct DVD, promotion
via website, downloads).
o You also need to talk about how videos can be linked to films or TV
programmes and form a cross-promotional strategy.
Styles, conventions & techniques

Using your two chosen videos, think about:

Styles
Popular music genres What type of music is it?
in-concert and as live footage
animation (stop motion, digital)
Interpretative Have they filmed the lyrics?
Narrative Does the video have a story?
Impressionist Are the images not directly related to the lyrics?
Surrealist Is it dreamlike?
Pastiche/parody Does mock or refer to another film or video?
Homage Does it pay homage or celebrate another work of art or
persons work?
Conventions
lyric interpretation Using the lyrics as a basis for the visuals
Extending or consolidating songs meaning Taking the lyrics and
expanding them?
Allusion a hidden meaning referring to something else?
Links to other artists either through the music or the lyrics?
Techniques
cutting to beat
effects
miming and lip sync
playback and lip sync
multi-image
camera movements
camera angles
chroma key
Start by stating what your two chosen videos are and why youve chosen them.

Its unlikely that both of your videos will include all of these Styles, Conventions
& Techniques so just mention the ones that are relevant. If your videos dont
feature them, then you can ignore them

Do each video, one after the other and if you can make links/contrasts with the
other one, then do!
