1.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

NPA/NPB Series Mechanical Diaphragm metering pump is a reciprocating chemcial dosing pump with up to 500L/hr

capacity and up to 12 Bar pressure featuring mechanically actuated diaphragm. The stroke adjustment mechanism

is based on eccentric principle, which significantly reduces the pulse of pressure and flow. The adjustment settings
is +/- 2% of the rated capacity within the 10-100% range. The structure of the NPA and NPB series metering pumps is
shown as following:

1.2 WORKING PRINCIPLE

Drive end (see Figure 3)

NP series pump is composed with 2 major parts: the drive end and liquid end. The discharge volume is determined by the
stroke length at the drive end, diaphragm size at the liquid end and stroke speed. The stroke length can be adjusted with
the adjustment handle when the pump is running or stops. The drive end works according to eccentric structure principle,
by rotating the handle, the internal and external eccentric parts creates different eccentricity. The crank-connecting rod
structure translates the rotation of the worm wheel to linear reciprocating movement of the connecting rod. When the
stroke is set at 0%, the center of the rod is aligned with the worm wheel center, so the rod does not have any reciprocat-
ing movement. When the stroke is set at 100%, there is eccentricity between the rod and worm centers, leading to linear
movement of the rod.
Mechanically actuated diaphragm liquid end (see Figure 3)
The diaphragm assembly is connected to the rod mechanically, the moves linearly together with the connecting rod.
During the suction stroke, the diaphragm moves back, the pressure in the pump head drops. When the pressure drops
below the pressure in the suction piping, the valve ball of the suction check valve is pushed up, and product in the suction
piping enters the pump head. At the end of the stroke, the diaphragm stops instantly, and the pressure in the pump head
is the same as that of the suction piping. The suction check valve ball re-sets.

NOTE:
During the suction stroke, the pressure in the pump head must be higher than the saturated vapor pressure of the medi-
um. If the liquid pressure is lower than the vapor pressure, cavitations will occur and damage the valve ball and valve seat,
and reduce the pump performance. Please consult factory if user suspects the cavitation.
During the discharge stroke, the diaphragm moves forward, the pressure in the pump head increases. When the pressure
in the pump head is higher than the discharge piping, the discharge check valve ball is pushed up and the medium in the
pump head enters the discharge piping. At the end of the stroke, the diaphragm stops instantly again, and the pressure in
the pump head is the same as that of the discharge piping, the discharge valve ball resets. Then, the next cycle!

2.1 Unpacking
When unpacking a pump or chemical free system, be certain that no parts are thrown away. Examine the equipment for possible
damage. If damage has occurred, file claim with the common carrier within 24 hours. Neptune will assist in estimating the repair
costs.

Upon receiving the pump, careful examination shall be carried out on the packing and confirm that the package is not dam-
aged. Checking the nameplate data against the packing list and purchase order to confirm that the pump is correct. When
unpacking, cautions shall be taken not to damage the package or the accessories in the package and check the goods against
the packing list.

If damages are identified, record the nature and level of the damage before unpacking. Photograph shall be taken, which will be
useful to file a claim against the shipper. At the mean time, notify PSG or local authorized distributor.

2.2 Storage of the pump

Temporary storage (less than 6 months)
It is preferred to store the equipment in its original packaging to avoid the impact to the product by the bad whether.
If the equipment is unpacked, then the pump shall be stored in the clean, dry and covered location, and it shall be kept
away from vibration. All flanges and thread connections shall be protected by covers.
Prolonged storage (longer than 6 months)
The basic requirement for equipment storage is to avoid internal and external corrosions, which are the result of daily and
seasonal changes. It is not realistic to fully prevent from steam and other gases, so the internal and external surfaces of
the equipment must be protected to minimized the level of corrosion.

Pump drive part

1. T
he gear-box shall be filled with high grade lubricating oil (such as Mobilarma 524) to avoid rusting. The gear-box
shall be filled up as much as possible to minimized the conditions for steam from being generated in the air. At the
end of storage period, the oil shall be drain thoroughly and the recommended oil shall be re-filled for equipment
commissioning.
2. R
emove the liquid end and drive motor, apply multi-purpose lubricating grease on the areas not painted. Retain the
parts being removed.

Electrical part
1. M
oisture-absorbing agent shall be placed inside all electrical equipment and re-pack with plastic bag on the outside.
Seal the bags. Please contact factory for recommended moisture-absorbing materials.

2.3 Location of the pump

The Mechanical Diaphragm metering pump is a totally enclosed pump, which can be used outdoors or indoors. When
installed outdoors, make sure that the pump is protected against extremes of nature as follows:

2.3.1 Running of the pump when exposed to tropical sunshine with ambient temperature above 90F (32C) would
cause excessive oil and motor temperatures. The pump should be shaded and located in such a way as to permit an ample
degree of air circulation.

2.3.2 Under cold conditions, the pump should be insulated and a heater or heat tracing should be supplied in order to
maintain the hydraulic fluid at an ambient temperature above 36F (2C.)
The Mechanical Diaphragm metering pumps should be supported on a rugged, anti-vibration, level surface foundation.
The foundation is preferred to be higher than the ground to avoid flooding and facilitate maintenance. Leave enough
space around the pump for maintenance and adjustment.

The mounting holes are provided on the pump for installation of anchor bolts. Please refer to Figure 4 for the size of
mounting holes.
Pumps installed outdoor shall be shaded by awning.

2.4 Collection of spillage

A container shall be prepared to collect the spilled product or lubricating oil in case of diaphragm rupture or oil seal leak-
age. It is particularly important when pumping hazardous materials.
The container shall be placed below the pump head (see Figure 1) to collect the spilled product or lubricating oil in case of
diaphragm rupture or oil seal leakage. For NPA/NPB0090-NPA/NPB0500, the container shall be placed under the hose con-
nection under the pump head, or connect a section of hose to the connection to drain the spillage to the proper container.

2.5 Installation
Figure 4 lists the recommended piping for the installation of metering pump system.

2.5.1 NPSH conditions

The suction piping for the metering pump shall be designed based on peak flow rate. The pump output is approximate to
sinusoid due to reprocating movement of the diaphragm. The peak flow is 3.14 times of the average flow, so the piping
shall be designed according to 3.14 times of the rated flow. If the rated flow of the pump is 200L/hr, then the piping shall
be designed as 3.14 x 200L/hr = 628L/hr.
The suction piping shall be designed 4 times larger to the suction port of the pump if the pumping media is of high viscos-
ity to reduce the flow loss of viscous fluid. If not sure, please consult factory to ensure the piping size.

2.5.2 General piping conditions

Special attention shall be paid to the connection between plastic pump head and rigid piping such as PVC. It is recom-
mended to use flexible connection if the extra stress or fluctuation can not be avoid.
Use the pipe materials resistant to the corrosion of the liquid. The selection of materials shall be careful to avoid elec-
tro-chemical corrosion at the connecting point between pump head and piping.
The piping shall be able to take the max. pressure. Remove the debris, sharp edge and residues inside the pipes. Purge all
the piping before final connection.
The piping shall be laid with angle to avoid the formation of air entrapment. The gas in the pump head will decrease the
accuracy of the flow.
Cross-connections shall be installed at the 90 degree elbows when handling the media will solid content (such as slurry) so
as to clean the piping without disassembling the piping.
Figure 5 is a typically recommended installation configuration.

2.5.3 Suction piping
The suction piping to the liquid end must be absolutely airtight for optimum operation any leakage in the suction
line will reduce delivered capacity.
Pipe should be one size larger than suction inlet size. It is suggested that the suction piping be leak tested with low
air pressure and a soap solution.
Limit the total length of the suction line to less than 2m. Minimize bends, elbows, or other restrictions for better
pumping efficiency.
Neptune recommends that the Mechanical Diaphragm metering pumps be operated with a flooded suction, as this
will facilitate start up and increase the service life of the pump. Use a foot valve for suction lift. Keep the suction
piping short and straight to minimize the suction loss.
Neptune recommends that the metering pumps be operated at or above the atmospheric pressure at its suction
though the pump can operate at sub-atmospheric pressure. However, when operating at sub-atmospheric pressure,
all connections shall be leak-proof to ensure the vacuum and seal, a foot valve shall be installed at the bottom of the
suction piping.
When pumping the materials close to its boiling point, sufficient suction pressure shall be provided to avoid vapor-
ization of the material when entering the pump head.
Use metal or plastic pipes on suction piping if possible. Such pipes have smooth interior to minimize the loss of
pressure. Large bending radius shall be used to reduce the local resistance along the piping.
Strainer shall be installed on the suction piping to prevent foreign solids from entering the pump head, or prevent
residue from entering the pump head to block the check valve. Check the strainer regularly to avoid blocking.
A vertical section shall be included in the suction piping near the inlet when using long suction piping.
No bending section is allowed in the suction piping. The top of the bending section may not be completed depleted
and air entrapment may be formed which will reduce the suction flow.

2.5.4 Discharge piping

Discharge piping size should not be smaller than the discharge port size to avoid pressure loss.
It is recommended that the Mechanical Diaphragm metering pump operate against a suitable back pressure (10
Psig minimum) to ensure the metering accuracy. It is strongly recommended to install a back pressure valve on the
discharge piping to build up the discharge pressure if the application could not generate a minimum of 10 Psig back
pressure.

2.6 Valves
Back pressure valve
All metering pump works under low pressure difference between the suction and discharge may result in low dos-
ing accuracy due to siphoning. To avoid this, backpressure valve shall be installed in the discharge piping to ensure
10 Psig pressure difference. Normally, the backpressure valve shall be installed close to the discharge of the pump.
However, for large capacity pump and system with long and thin discharge piping, the back pressure valve shall be
close to the dosing point to minimize the siphoning.

Pulsation damper
The pulsation damper on the discharge piping shall be used together with the backpressure valve to absorb the
peak flow between the pump and backpressure valve. The backpressure valve will quickly open and close during
each stroke without pulsation damper, while it will shift between half-open and half-close positions with a pulsation
damper so as to reduce the wear on the backpressure valve. The most important benefit of the pulsation damper on
the discharge piping is to limit the flow and pressure profile of the metering pump. The performance of the pump
will be improved with a properly sized pulsation damper and smaller sized piping may be used to reduce the cost of
the system.

PSG (Shanghai) Co., Ltd 16 PSGC-20000-E-01

To calculate the capacity of the pulsation damper:
Pressured pressure: P pressured = (0.6-0.7) P discharge pressure
Capacity of the damper: V15 X (SWEPT); SWEPT: the displacement of each stoke of the metering pump
Please consult pump distributor for more needs regarding the pulsation damper.

Pressure relief valve and vent valve

If the piping system is blocked or valve closes by error, the discharge piping is subject to a discharge pressure
exceeding the rated pressure, which will damage the pump, piping or equipment. To avoid this, pressure relief valve
shall be installed on the discharge piping to effectively control the system flow and pressure so as to prevent the
pump system and piping from being damaged.
Pressure relief valve shall be place between the pump discharge and shutopff valve to prevent the damage due
to accidently closure of the valve. The discharge of the pressure relief valve shall be routed back to suction piping
or vent, however, in any case, the end of the protection piping shall be made visible so as to detect the leak of the
pressure relief valve.

The vent valve is used to assist the normal start up of the pump, it shall be placed at the discharge of the pump.

Check valve
The role of the check valve is to prevent the flow-back and isolate the discharge of the pump from the system (to
ensure that the system pressure will not imposed on the diaphragm). The check valve shall be located before the
discharge piping system enters the boiler or other pressured vessel.

Shutoff valve
The purpose of the shutoff valve on the pump piping is to isolate the pump and system. It shall be installed on both
suction and discharge piping.

2.7 ELECTRICAL WIRINGS

WARNING:
The reversed rotation of the motor will damage the pump and motor, which is not covered by the warranty. Please
operate the pump in the correct orientation strictly, and do not forget to ground the pump and equipment.
Before connecting to motor, inspect the specification of the motor and compare against the equipment and supply
voltage. The connection of the motor shall be the same as the protection requirement of the connecting box.
Check the direction of the motor to be the same of the arrow on the gear box of the pump. Ensure the rotation
direction of the crankshaft is the same as the arrow on the gear box of the pump.
The protection device of the motor (fuse or thermo-protection) shall be the same as the rated current of the motor.
Check the specification of the drive motor of the fan against the power supply before turn on the motor with
independent fan, the connection of the fan motor shall be the same of the protection requirement of the
connection box.
Check the orientation of the fan is the same as the label on the fan hood, and wind shall be blown towards motor
and pump.

SECTION III O P E R AT I O N

3.1 Pump start up and inspection

Care must be taken for the environmental impact of the chemicals being pumped (acidity, basic, oxidation,
reduction, solution and etc.) during operation.

Check if the wiring is correct as required.

Check all shutoff valves on suction and discharge piping are open. If closed, it will cause a sudden increase of the
pressure at the pump discharge, overload the pump and damage the pump body. (It is strongly recommended to
install pressure relief valve on the discharge piping.)

Operate with extreme care when pumping hazardous materials, to avoid the harm due to leakage.

WARNING:

It is strongly recommended to stop the pump when the temperature is below -10.

Before operating the pump, turn the adjustment handle to 0%. After pump start up, check for any abnormality
before checking the discharge valve is open and set the adjustment handle to desired position.

3.2 Check the wiring of the motor

Start up the pump, check the motor for proper rotation. The orientation of the motor must be the same as the arrow
on the pump cover (look from the fan side of the motor). If the rotation is not correct, change the wiring in reference
to 2.7 Electrical Wirings.

3.3 START UP
Manually adjust the flow
Loose the stroke lock nut on the pump cover side (NPB) or pull out the adjustment handle (NPA) to change the
pump flow by turning the adjustment knob. After setting the correct capacity, tighten the stroke lock nut (NPB) or
push back the adjustment handle (NPA) to lock the capacity.

Flood the pumping system.

Venting the suction and discharge piping of the pump is critical. Therefore, before the pressure test, operate the
pump without discharge pressure to flood the pumping system. A simple way to ensure the flooding is to install T
connection and check valve at the pump discharge connection.

If the pump will not be operating for a prolonged period of time, the temperature change of the media may generate
gas in the system. To vent the gas, a valve shall be installed at the high point on the discharge piping to vent the gas
when the pump is turned on.

PSG (Shanghai) Co., Ltd 18 PSGC-20000-E-01

SECTION IV MAINTENANCE

3.4 CALIBRATION OF THE FLOW RATE

After the pump is running for the initial 12hours, calibration shall be done. Measure the accurate flow under specific
operation conditions, usually the flow rate at 100%, 50% and 10%, is sufficient to proof the performance of the
pump within full adjustment range.

The flow of the pump can be calculated by measuring the level change of a calibrated vessel. It is suggested to use
this method for the calibration of hazardous liquid.

4.1 PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Driving parts
The drive end lubrication system of the Neptune Mechanical Diaphragm metering pump is a full-live design, and
does not require independent oil change in the total service life of the pump. The lubricating oil shall be changed
when maintenance of the drive end parts is carried out.
Volume of the drive end lubricating oil: 0.5L;
Viscosity @40 = 209cSt
Viscosity index = 95
ISO grade = 220

Diaphragm assembly
It is recommended to replace the diaphragm assembly every 5000 hours or annually to avoid the sudden stop
or leakage due to rupture of the diaphragm. Refer to 4.6 REPLACEMENT OF DIAPHRAGM AND OIL SEAL for the
replacement method.

Oil seal
It is recommended to replace the oil seal annually for Neptune metering pump. It is suggested to replace the oil seal
together with the diaphragm assembly because it requires to remove the diaphragm when replacing the oil seal.

See 4.6 REPLACEMENT OF DIAPHRAGM AND OIL SEAL

Check valve
Similar to diaphragm, it is recommended to replace the check valve ball, seat, gasket and O-ring every 5000 hours
or annually.
It requires more frequent replacement of the parts if the pumping media is highly corrosive (acid, slurry and etc.).
Refer to 4.5 NORMAL MAINTENANCE for replacement of worn check valve.

PSGC-20000-E-01 19 PSG (Shanghai) Co., Ltd

4.2 RETURN TO FACTORY
If not authorized, the plant shall not repair the pump. For the pumps returned to the factory, it shall be supplied with
clean description of the media being pumped. The pump head shall be cleaned before shipping, and ensure correct
packing and securing method to avoid damage during shipment.

Note: complete MSDS shall be included in the packing for returned pumps. This measure is helpful to diagnose
problem and repair the pump, and it can also help to prevent the residue in the pump from harming the
maintenance staff. MSDS must be provided for all returned pumps.

4.3 MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE

The PSG mechanical metering pump is carefully designed, manufactured, assembled and tested for reliability and
minimum maintenance. However, it is still recommended to carry out weekly maintenance to ensure the normal
operation.

Check the following parts for leakage. If any, contact factory.
1. Motor installation flange: replace flange sealing O-ring if any leakage
2. Stroke adjustment knob: replace stroke shaft seal if any leakage
Check the flow of the metering pump
Calibrate the metering pump per SECTION III. Measure the flow of the metering pump at different settings by close
the valve on the liquid tank and open the valve for calibration column.
If the calibration column is not installed, use a calibrated vessel (with scale) with foot valve (or inlet pipe). Measure
the pump flow at different capacity settings.
Leakage at the checking ports
Check the liquid collected at the checking port is process media or lubricating oil. If the diaphragm fails, the
liquid shall be process media; if the oil seal fails, the liquid shall be lubricating oil. Replace the parts per 4.6
REPLACEMENT OF DIAPHARGM AND OIL SEAL.
