NPA/NPB Series Mechanical Diaphragm metering pump is a reciprocating chemcial dosing pump with up to 500L/hr
capacity and up to 12 Bar pressure featuring mechanically actuated diaphragm. The stroke adjustment mechanism
is based on eccentric principle, which significantly reduces the pulse of pressure and flow. The adjustment settings
is +/- 2% of the rated capacity within the 10-100% range. The structure of the NPA and NPB series metering pumps is
shown as following:

NOTE:
During the suction stroke, the pressure in the pump head must be higher than the saturated vapor pressure of the medi-
um. If the liquid pressure is lower than the vapor pressure, cavitations will occur and damage the valve ball and valve seat,
and reduce the pump performance. Please consult factory if user suspects the cavitation.
During the discharge stroke, the diaphragm moves forward, the pressure in the pump head increases. When the pressure
in the pump head is higher than the discharge piping, the discharge check valve ball is pushed up and the medium in the
pump head enters the discharge piping. At the end of the stroke, the diaphragm stops instantly again, and the pressure in
the pump head is the same as that of the discharge piping, the discharge valve ball resets. Then, the next cycle!

2.1 Unpacking
When unpacking a pump or chemical free system, be certain that no parts are thrown away. Examine the equipment for possible
damage. If damage has occurred, file claim with the common carrier within 24 hours. Neptune will assist in estimating the repair
costs.
Upon receiving the pump, careful examination shall be carried out on the packing and confirm that the package is not dam-
aged. Checking the nameplate data against the packing list and purchase order to confirm that the pump is correct. When
unpacking, cautions shall be taken not to damage the package or the accessories in the package and check the goods against
the packing list.
If damages are identified, record the nature and level of the damage before unpacking. Photograph shall be taken, which will be
useful to file a claim against the shipper. At the mean time, notify PSG or local authorized distributor.
Electrical part
1. M
oisture-absorbing agent shall be placed inside all electrical equipment and re-pack with plastic bag on the outside.
Seal the bags. Please contact factory for recommended moisture-absorbing materials.
2.3.1 Running of the pump when exposed to tropical sunshine with ambient temperature above 90F (32C) would
cause excessive oil and motor temperatures. The pump should be shaded and located in such a way as to permit an ample
degree of air circulation.
2.3.2 Under cold conditions, the pump should be insulated and a heater or heat tracing should be supplied in order to
maintain the hydraulic fluid at an ambient temperature above 36F (2C.)
The Mechanical Diaphragm metering pumps should be supported on a rugged, anti-vibration, level surface foundation.
The foundation is preferred to be higher than the ground to avoid flooding and facilitate maintenance. Leave enough
space around the pump for maintenance and adjustment.

2.6 Valves
Back pressure valve
All metering pump works under low pressure difference between the suction and discharge may result in low dos-
ing accuracy due to siphoning. To avoid this, backpressure valve shall be installed in the discharge piping to ensure
10 Psig pressure difference. Normally, the backpressure valve shall be installed close to the discharge of the pump.
However, for large capacity pump and system with long and thin discharge piping, the back pressure valve shall be
close to the dosing point to minimize the siphoning.
Pulsation damper
The pulsation damper on the discharge piping shall be used together with the backpressure valve to absorb the
peak flow between the pump and backpressure valve. The backpressure valve will quickly open and close during
each stroke without pulsation damper, while it will shift between half-open and half-close positions with a pulsation
damper so as to reduce the wear on the backpressure valve. The most important benefit of the pulsation damper on
the discharge piping is to limit the flow and pressure profile of the metering pump. The performance of the pump
will be improved with a properly sized pulsation damper and smaller sized piping may be used to reduce the cost of
the system.
The vent valve is used to assist the normal start up of the pump, it shall be placed at the discharge of the pump.
Check valve
The role of the check valve is to prevent the flow-back and isolate the discharge of the pump from the system (to
ensure that the system pressure will not imposed on the diaphragm). The check valve shall be located before the
discharge piping system enters the boiler or other pressured vessel.
Shutoff valve
The purpose of the shutoff valve on the pump piping is to isolate the pump and system. It shall be installed on both
suction and discharge piping.
Check all shutoff valves on suction and discharge piping are open. If closed, it will cause a sudden increase of the
pressure at the pump discharge, overload the pump and damage the pump body. (It is strongly recommended to
install pressure relief valve on the discharge piping.)
Operate with extreme care when pumping hazardous materials, to avoid the harm due to leakage.
WARNING:
It is strongly recommended to stop the pump when the temperature is below -10.
Before operating the pump, turn the adjustment handle to 0%. After pump start up, check for any abnormality
before checking the discharge valve is open and set the adjustment handle to desired position.
3.3 START UP
Manually adjust the flow
Loose the stroke lock nut on the pump cover side (NPB) or pull out the adjustment handle (NPA) to change the
pump flow by turning the adjustment knob. After setting the correct capacity, tighten the stroke lock nut (NPB) or
push back the adjustment handle (NPA) to lock the capacity.
If the pump will not be operating for a prolonged period of time, the temperature change of the media may generate
gas in the system. To vent the gas, a valve shall be installed at the high point on the discharge piping to vent the gas
when the pump is turned on.
The flow of the pump can be calculated by measuring the level change of a calibrated vessel. It is suggested to use
this method for the calibration of hazardous liquid.
Diaphragm assembly
It is recommended to replace the diaphragm assembly every 5000 hours or annually to avoid the sudden stop
or leakage due to rupture of the diaphragm. Refer to 4.6 REPLACEMENT OF DIAPHRAGM AND OIL SEAL for the
replacement method.
Oil seal
It is recommended to replace the oil seal annually for Neptune metering pump. It is suggested to replace the oil seal
together with the diaphragm assembly because it requires to remove the diaphragm when replacing the oil seal.
Check valve
Similar to diaphragm, it is recommended to replace the check valve ball, seat, gasket and O-ring every 5000 hours
or annually.
It requires more frequent replacement of the parts if the pumping media is highly corrosive (acid, slurry and etc.).
Refer to 4.5 NORMAL MAINTENANCE for replacement of worn check valve.
Note: complete MSDS shall be included in the packing for returned pumps. This measure is helpful to diagnose
problem and repair the pump, and it can also help to prevent the residue in the pump from harming the
maintenance staff. MSDS must be provided for all returned pumps.
The PSG mechanical metering pump is carefully designed, manufactured, assembled and tested for reliability and
minimum maintenance. However, it is still recommended to carry out weekly maintenance to ensure the normal
operation.
Each pump shall have the following spare part to avoid delay of maintenance work.
NOTE:
NPA/B 0002-NPA/B 0050 metal check valves are assembled at the factory, please do not dissemble the pump for no
reason.
The design of check valve allows self-cleaning and required minimum maintenance. The blocked check valve
is usually cleaned with diluted neutral detergent and warm water (compatible to the materials) pumping for 15
minutes and then washing with clean water.
WARNING:
Read the instruction carefully and follow the correct drawing before re-assemble the check valve. If the check valve
is assembled incorrectly, the following situations may occur:
1) Immediately damage the mechanical structure of the metering pump
2) No pumping flow
3) The flow in reverse direction (from the discharge piping to suction piping)
PREPARATION
1. Set the stroke adjustment handle to 0%
2. D
isconnect the power source to prevent the equipment from running accidently. Attach a tag on power switch,
notifying maintenance in progress
3. Disconnect the suction and discharge check valves from the system
4.5.1 Replace the check valve: NPA/B0002-0050 PVC&PVDF liquid end (refer to Figure 10)
WARNING:
Incorrect assembly of valve ball and valve seat will damage the metering pump. Refer to figure 10 for correct
sequence to assemble the suction and discharge valve balls and seats. Do not use PTFE tape on the thread on the
valve body to head to avoid leakage due to insufficient pressure on O-ring.
Steps to remove and replace the check valve:
1. Remove the valve body (02) from the pump head (08)
2. Remove the check valve assembly, including valve ball (05), seat (06), valve body (04), O-ring (07) and
gasket (03)
3. Clean the valve body (02) and thread hole on pump head (08)
4. Place a new gasket (03) into the valve body (02)
5. Re-assemble the new check valve as shown in diagram
Discharge side: place the check valve assembly into the thread hole of pump head, O-ring shall be placed outside
the check valve body near to the valve seat. Hand screw the valve body into the pump head. Do not turn too tight.
Suction side: place the check valve assembly into the check valve body, O-ring shall be placed outside the check
valve body on the opposite to the valve seat. Hand screw the check valve assembly and valve body into the suction
of the pump. Do not turn too tight.
4.5.2 Replace the check valve: NPA/B0025-0050 metal liquid end (refer to Figure 14)
NPA/B0025-0050 metal check valve is assembled at the factory, so do not dissemble for no reason. If it does not
function well, flush with solvent, wash with warm detergent solution and blow with compressed air to remove the
foreign materials. If the above procedure does not help, replace the check valve.
TO REMOVE:
Screw the check valve off the pump head
WARNING:
Incorrect assembly of check valve will damage the metering pump. Screw the check valve according to
theuparrow. Hand screw, do not screw too tight to avoid damage the check valve.
4.5.3 To replacing the valve ball, seat and seal: NPA/B0090-NPA/B 0500 PVC&PVDF liquid end
(Figure 12)
To remove:
1. Loose the nut (02), the connector (01) will easily separate from the other parts of the pump head
2. Remove the check valve assembly from the pump head (07)
3. T
urn the nut (02) 1-2 circles on the valve body (03), to make sure the nut is loose and distant from valve
seat (05) so that when removing the seat, it will fall into the nut.
4. Place the valve body and nut on a leveled surface with the nut at the bottom. View from the top, there
are 4 big holes surrounding a small hole in the middle. Place a blunt head tool such as hex wrench into
the middle hole till it touches the top of valve ball (04)
5. Hit gently with hammer till the valve ball and seat and body are separated.
WARNING:
If the disassembly is just for checking, make sure hit gently with blunt head tool to avoid damaging the valve ball. If
the valve ball and seat is damaged during the disassembly, replace the ball and seat. Compressed air may be used
to disassemble the valve ball and seat from opposite of the valve seat.
6. Remove 2 O-rings (02, 06) gently between the body and seat
7. Carefully clean all usable parts. If chemical is used, it must be compatible with the material.
RE-ASSEMBLE:
WARNING:
The assembly sequences of the suction and discharge check valves are different. Please refer to Figure 17 for
assembly sequence. If assembled incorrectly, the following situations will occur:
1. Place the valve ball (04) into the valve body (03)
2. Place the valve body on a leveled surface with valve ball side up. Place the valve seat (05) on the valve body,
slope side towards outside. When the valve seat is pressed in to the valve body, the valve ball shall be on
the sharp side of the seat, see Figure 16, the slope shall not be inside the valve body. Press the valve seat into
the valve body with a flat item. If the seat is assembled incorrectly, the valve ball can not seal and the check
valve will not function properly
3. Place new O-rings (02, 06) between the body (05) and seat (5)
1. Reset the connector (01). Refer to Figure 14 for the assembly direction of the valves on suction and discharge.
Install grand (02) and hand tight it
2. Hand screw the check valve assembly, do not screw too tight.
To re-assemble:
WARNING:
The assembly sequences of the suction and discharge check valves are different. If assembled incorrectly, the
following situations will occur:
1. Screw the correct end of the check valve assembly into the pump head. Place O-rings between the pump head
and check valve assembly.
WARNING:
PTFE tape shall not be used on the thread of the check valve, it may lead to leakage due to insufficient pressure on
O-ring. New O-rings shall be used each time during re-assembly to ensure seal and leak-free.
2. Place the O-rings between the check valve assembly and thread connector and screw in the thread connector.
Make sure that all the shutoff valves are closed and the pump head is de-pressured before replacing the diaphragm.
If the oil seal fails, it is recommended to replace the diaphragm and oil at the same time.
7. Set the capacity at 100%, turn the fan till the diaphragm is at the rear position
8. Reset the pump head, make sure the correct installation of suction and discharge, screw in the bolt with
90in-lb torque
9. Set the capacity at 0%, turn the fan
10. Re-install the fan cover
4.8 RE-START
1. Re-connect the pump and piping system
2. set the capacity at 0%
3. Open shutoff valves on suction and discharge piping, re-start the pump
