EXAMINATION MID SEM I
Subject Code: 2161901 Date: 07/03/2017
Subject Name: Dynamics of Machinery
Time: 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM Total Marks: 50
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.

Q.1 (A) Define. (1) Simple Harmonic Motion (2) Degrees of Freedom 5
(2) Resonance (4) Damping Coefficient
(5) Natural Frequency
(B) A steel wire with E = 1.96 x 1011 N/m2 is of 2 mm diameter and is 30 mm 5
long. It is fixed at the upper end and carries a mass M kg at its lower end. Find
mass M so that frequency of longitudinal vibrations is 4 cycle.
Q.2 (A) Define Dynamic balancing with suitable example. 5
(B) A shaft is supported in bearings 1.8 m apart and projects 0.45 m beyond 5
bearings at each end. The shaft carries three pulleys one at each end and one at
the middle of its length. The mass of end pulleys is 48 kg and 20 kg and their
centre of gravity are 15 mm and 12.5 mm respectively from the shaft axis. The
centre pulley has a mass of 56 kg and its centre of gravity is 15 mm from the
shaft axis. If the pulleys are arranged so as to give static balance.
Determine :
(1) Relative angular positions of the pulleys.
(2) Dynamic forces produced on the bearings when the shaft rotates at
300 r.p.m
OR
(B) Four masses A, B, C and D are completely balanced. Masses C and D make 5
angles of 90 and 195 respectively with B in the same sense. The rotating
o o

masses have following properties.

m =25 kg, m =40 kg, m =35 kg, R =150 mm, R =200 mm,
b c c a b
R =100 mm, R =180 mm, Planes B and C are 250 mm apart.
c d
Determine 1. The mass A and its angular position,
2. The position of planes A and D.
Q.3 (A) Explain an analytical method of balancing of several masses rotating in 5
different planes.
(B) A, B, C and D are four masses carried by a rotating shaft at radii 0.1 m, 0.15 5
m, 0.15 m and 0.2 m respectively. The planes in which the masses rotate are
spaced at 500 mm apart and the magnitude of the masses B, C and D are 9 kg,
5 kg and 4 kg respectively. Find the required mass A; and the relative angular
settings of the four masses so that the shaft shall be in complete balance.
OR
(B) Four masses 150 kg, 200 kg, 100 kg and 250 kg are attached to a shaft 5
revolving at radii 150 mm, 200 mm, 100 mm and 250 mm ; in planes A, B, C
and D respectively. The planes B, C and D are at distances 350 mm, 500 mm
and 800 mm from plane A. The masses in planes B, C and D are at an angle
105o , 200o and 300o measured anticlockwise from mass in plane A. It is
required to balance the system by placing the balancing masses in the planes P
and Q which are midway between the planes A and B, and between C and D
respectively. If the balancing masses revolve at radius 180 mm, find the
magnitude and angular positions of the balance masses.
Q.4 (A) Explain Equilibrium method to find the frequency of vibratory system. 5
(B) Find the natural frequency of a system shown in Figure.1,Take K=1000 N/m, 5
M =10 kg, m = 2 kg, R = 50 mm and r = 30 mm
OR
(A) Explain Rayleighs method to find the frequency of vibratory system 5
(B) The mass 'm' is hanging from a chord attached to the circular homogeneous 5
disc of mass 'M' and radius 'R' as shown in Figure-2. The disc is restrained
from rotating by a spring attached at radius 'r' from the centre. If the mass is
displaced downwards from rest position, determine the frequency of
oscillations.
Q.5 (A) Explain Eneregy method to find the frequency of vibratory system. 5
(B) Find the natural frequency of system shown in Figure-3. If m, K1, K2, L are 5
fixed, find the value of 'b' for which the system will not vibrate.
OR
(A) A cantilever shaft of 50 mm diameter and 300 mm long has a disc of mass 100 5
Kg at its free end. The Youngs modulus for the shaft material is 200 GPa.
Determine the frequency of longitudinal and transverse vibration of the shaft.
(B) A compound pendulum shown in figure:4 is suspended from a point O and is 5
free to oscillate. G is the centre of gravity, m is the mass and k is the radius of
gyration about an axis through the center of gravity G. Determine the equation
of motion and equation for natural frequency of vibration of the system.
