Lesson Title: Diversity - Its Okay to Be Different


Grade Level: K-2
Big Idea:
PS1. Understanding Self as an Individual and as a
Member of a Diverse Local and Global Community
PS2. Interacting With Others in Ways That Respect
Individual and Group Differences
Grade Level Expectations:
K- Identify basic feelings; Idenitify similarities and
differences between self and others.
1 Identify a variety of feelings; Identify similarities and
differences among students within the school community.
2- Express a variety of feelings; Identify similarities and
differences among families and their traditions.
ASCA National Standards:
PS:A2.3 Recognize, accept, respect and appreciate
individual differences
PS:A2.4 Recognize, accept, and appreciate ethical and
cultural diverstiy
Learning Objective:
-I can define the word diversity
-I can list a characteristic about me that is diverse.
Materials Needed:
-Computer (to show Its Okay To Be Different story)
-Its Okay To Be Different Worksheet
Formative Assessment:
Students will complete a worksheet where they will
identify something about them that they believe is
diverse.
Lesson Preparation:
Essential Questions:
1. What diversity mean?
2. What is something about you that is different?
Engagement/Hook:
Students will watch the video Its Okay To Be Different.
Instructional Procedures:
Counselor(s):
1. Counselor will explain to students that our topic for
today is diversity.
2. Counselor will ask students to answer essential
questions listed above.
3. Counselor will inform students that they are going to
listen to a story titled Its Okay To Be Different.
4. After the video, counselor will ask students what is
different about them?
5. Counselor will explain the activity to the students
-Each student will receive a worksheet that says Its
Okay to Be
Different at the top
-Each student will be instructed to draw and write
about
something that is different about them for the class
book.
-After all students have completed their pages the
counselor
will have them share it with the class.
6. Once students have completed their page for the book
the counselor will bind all of the pages together to make
one class book for the teacher to keep in the classroom.
Students:
1.Students will listen as counselor explains the topic for
the day.
2. Students will participate in the discussion about the
essential questions listed above.
3. Students will listen to the story Its Okay to Be
Different.
4. Students will share ideas about what makes them
different.
5. Students will complete the worksheet for the book and
will turn it in to the counselor after sharing them with the
class.
