Momentum Lab

Introduction:

Momentum is when you multiply the mass of an object by the velocity of it. Its equal to

the force of an object and so if you increase or decrease the momentum of an object, then you

increase or decrease the force of it. That is impulse, which is the change of momentum. The

change of momentum is greatest when its bouncing. Also, you get more force if you decrease

momentum in a short period of time.

Problem:

What is the momentum of three different toys?

Materials:

Flat Surface

Meter Stick

Chalk

Stopwatch

3 Different Toys

Procedure:

1. Make a starting line on the flat surface, with the chalk.

2. Wind up the toy.

3. Start the stopwatch at the same time as youre letting go of the wind up toy.

4. Mark down the spot, on the flat surface, the toy reaches at every second. (Up to as many

seconds as you want.)

5. Write down the length the toy went in the amount of seconds chosen.

6. Repeat with the next two toys.

Data:

Toys: Mass: (kg) Distance: Time: Velocity: (N) Momentum:

(grams/1000) (cm) (seconds) (v=d/t) (p=mv)
(kg*m/s)

#1 - 0.02 7.6 3 2.5 0.1

Caterpillar

#2 - Robot 0.06 5.1 3 1.7 0.1

#3 - Cat Dog 0.07 91.7 3 30.6 2.1

Conclusion:

The toy with the most momentum was the cat dog wind up toy. It has the most

momentum because it was faster than the other toys. It also went farther than the other toys did

in just three seconds.
