Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.

Courage in taking risks is required or an

individual is guaranteed to fail. Reality proves that betting with reckless decision-making will only
lead to a fiasco. Thus, anticipation of what obligations may lie ahead is crucial to propose a
preeminent plan to handle a problem. The emerging risks and need for more innovation to tackle
them are where actuaries come in since they specialise in analysing the financial costs of risks. The
permutation of analytical skills, mathematical knowledge and financial theories which actuaries use
to manage today's financial risks has intrigued me.

Being nurtured in a family of banking and financial managers, the idea of maximising
shareholders value through investment, interactions of economic agents and how economies work
interest me. I first came across actuarial science in a career talk and was inspired by how the skill
conventionally applied in insurance is utilised to forecast and assess the risks in estimating the
financial viability of a capital project. Through research and actuarial magazines, I acquired plentiful
insight into the profession and this combined with my passion for Mathematics has influenced my
degree choice.

As a preliminary step, I took up Further Mathematics. Owing to my mental endurance and

continual practice, I developed the analytical problem solving skills required to solve the laborious
questions which were quite challenging. Reading about the Millennium Problems, I realised how
shallow my knowledge is and this intensified my inclination to explore deeper the elegance of
Mathematics, in the hope of solving those puzzles. Securing awards in national level mental
arithmetic competitions and an honourable mention in a Kangaroo Math Competition boosted my
morale to accept the challenge.

When I was a part-time accounts assistant, my duties included filing invoices manually and
updating databases using computer software. This promoted my ability to sort a huge pile of data
into a select order before executing analysis. Having the chance to communicate and learn from
superiors gave me an explicit perception of how business operates. The volunteering experience in
the Special People Association gave me an opportunity to coordinate with company leaders and
local officials for consent and sponsorship to perform diverse events. This sharpened my oral
communication skills which I think is crucial for me in delivering actuarial ideas to non-specialists,
since it is my obligation to articulate intricate technical and statistical details to my clients as an
actuary.

In high school, I was the Deputy Head Prefect, responsible for guiding junior prefects to
execute their duties properly. We often collaborated with other clubs to organise school events, in
which I was actively involved as a co-organiser. This experience made me a liberal-minded leader
plus a team member. As a Tang Soo Do black belt practitioner, focus and perseverance are requisites
as only regular practice results in achievement. The fruit of my labour is being a medallist in
national championships. As devotion is not a new concept for me, I believe in my aptitude to
engross myself in long hours of dedicated analysis and statistical modelling including passing a
series of rigorous professional exams to demonstrate my capability.
As there is a shortage of actuaries due to the expanding demand among a wide range of
industries in Malaysia, I am determined to be a competent actuary. I aspire to contribute in
foreseeing and framing the countrys economy by utilising my intellect and expertise. With this in
mind, I would appreciate the chance to enrol in your course as it is a stepping stone for me to
embark on my demanding career.
