What background do your students have?

Are the students parents fluent in English or the child's native language and how that is helpful or
you think hinders the child?
What are the demographics of the school itself such as ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and the
education level of the parents if you know that.

weaknesses of the model?

Why did you decide to become a teacher? Was there a teacher who inspired you to decide to
want to teach?
What grades do you teach ESL to?

What background do your students have? Our school is in transition. In the past, we have had a
strong Asian population that were very educated. Our boundaries have changed, we are receiving
more Russian and Hispanic families with various background. Our school has 18 different
languages with 74 qualified ELL students.

Are the students parents fluent in English or the child's native language and how that is helpful or
you think hinders the child? Each student is an individual case with some parents fluent in
English. I believe the level of education that the parents have impacted students more than the
language itself.

What are the demographics of the school itself such as ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and the
education level of the parents if you know that. 60% of population is white. 14% free/reduce
lunch.

What program model do you teach with? We currently have a pull out model. Our districts
encourages push in but our school has limited resources.

Do you like the program model you teach with and what do you think are the strengths and
weaknesses of the model? I like out pull out model. It's strength is working with small numbers
of students. It's weakness is working in isolation.

What is your favorite teaching lesson?


The newcomer group ( In the USA less than 1 year) is a favorite - It's vocabulary development
and allows students to engage in conversations. We use a lot of western type of games to teacher
such as UNO ( Colors and numbers)

Why did you choose to do ESL and do you have any other endorsements or training for
teaching? I am the reading specialist at the school which includes being the ELL coordinator for
the building. I have no specials training in ELL. I do have a masters in general education and a
masters in special education. My experiences have helped me tremendously. I have 10 years as a
general education teacher, 10 years as a special education teacher, 2 years as a math support
teacher and 5 years as a reading specialist.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?


I took a course in college and it was a natural fit.
