ICT Outcomes:
-General Outcome - P3: Students will communicate through multimedia
-Specific Outcome:
-Create a multimedia presentation, incorporating such features as visual images
(clip art, video clips), sounds (live recordings, sound clips) and animated images,
appropriate to a variety of audiences and purposes
Activity Description:
The students will create a video about one of the following in Alberta:
-Its location and landscapes
-Common wild animals
-A community and its festivals
-Another topic about Alberta approved by the teacher
The video must:
-Be done in groups of 2 or 3
-Have a title
-Include video clips but can also include photos
-Be in French (No English)
-Each student must have lines in the video
-Be 2-4 minutes in length
-Include a glossary of 5 terms unique to the presentation with their English equivalent. This is to
be handed in at the end of the presentation (ex. if you present on animals, you could provide
names of animals in French and English)
-Be able to be shared with the class
The video can be done in multiple formats including:
-tour guide
-documentary
-newscast
-short film (create a story around one of these topics)
-any other format approved by the teacher
Technology available for use:
-MacBook Pro (iMovie, voice recorder, webcam, other editing apps)
-Green screen
-HD Video Cameras
You can film your own footage, or find clips and photos from the internet.
Classes leading up to this presentation will have covered the topics of Alberta so that the students are
aware of the vocabulary needed and how to talk about these topics.
A class will be taken to do the following:
-introduce the assignment
-explain storyboarding
-explain how to search for photos and videos and do proper research
-explain how to use iMovie and green screen technology
Students will then be given two classes to form their groups, choose a topic, research their topic, and
create a storyboard.
They will then have two or three classes, depending on how everything goes, to film, take pictures, find
videos or pictures that they will use in their video, edit them, and create their video.
The sixth period will be used for presenting to the class.
Potential Problems:
-Line ups for green screens (try to have a few stations available. Have students who are waiting
work on other things such as title pages, the script, props, or costumes.)
-Noisiness for filming (Allow students to move outside the classroom to different spaces)
-Not enough cameras (Allow students to bring in their own cameras or use their phones)
-Not enough time or too much time (Be checking each groups progress each day to know how
much time is needed to finish. If one group in falling behind, let them work at recess or lunch to
catch up. If the groups are moving faster than expected, just bump up the presentation day.)
Provide a rationale for the value of using New Media and the value of using technology.
Describe how this will impact student learning. An activation matrix might help you
articulate these ideas (optional: if it helps use it if not then fine).
Using New Media in a project such as this is valuable for many reasons. Students
will be able to conduct their own research, choose what topic interests them the
most, which way they would like to use new media to present their findings, and
make their own presentation. This is a very student driven assignment. By
conducting their own research using the internet, students will be open to much
more information than what a teacher could present in a class. Having the students
create a video will help to make the content of this part of the course more personal
and relatable. Students will need to not only read and take in content, but then
reproduce this content in the form of their video. Learning and then applying what is
learned is a great way to make sure what is learned sticks. It will be a much better
way to learn the content that just the teacher presenting them in class or even just
student research alone. Having each group present their own video creates a fun
atmosphere where students can learn about the curriculum topics. These videos can
then be used at later times for review or to teach in future years. Students learn
well from their peers because to them it hardly seems like learning. They pay
attention to these videos because they want to see what their friends did, which
makes them indirectly pay attention to the curriculum content in each video.
By using new media tools students will gain skills that they can use outside of the
French classroom.
