You may consult the text book by Kleppner and Kolenkow. Use the rough sheet provided for working out
details, and enter ONLY the answer within the box provided on this sheet. If the box size allows, you may
indicate only the major steps leading to your answer.

1. A horizontal, frictionless circular table of radius R is rotating at a constant angular speed about a vertical
axis through its center. A bead of mass m is at rest with respect to the table at a distance r0 from the
center, attached to the axis by a massless string. Consider two reference frames: S, an inertial frame
attached to the ground and S 0 , a frame attached to the table and rotating with it (see figure below). At
t = 0, assume the bead is on the x0 -axis and the axes of S and S 0 coincide. [20 marks]

(a) List all the forces with magnitude and direction in the frame S, at t = 0. [2]

(b) List all the forces with magnitude and direction in the frame S 0 , at t = 0. [2]

(c) The string breaks at t = 0, and the bead flies off the table. List the forces for t > 0 in
the S frame [2]

the S 0 frame [2]

(d) Qualitatively draw the trajectory of the bead in the two frames on the following diagrams. [2+4]

(e) What is the coordinate (wrt x-axis in S) of the point where the bead leaves the table? [2]

(f) What is the 0 coordinate (wrt x0 -axis in S 0 ) of the point where it leaves the table? [4]

2. Two identical uniform disks A and B of mass M and radius R are on a horizontal frictionless table as
shown in the figure. Initially, A spins about its center at a rate 0 and moves in the i direction with velocity
v0 as indicated, while disk B is stationary. A makes contact with B in a glancing collision and sticks to
B instantly. The two then move together as a single rigid object with angular velocity f about the point
of contact. [20 marks]

~ i with respect to the origin O?

(a) What is the initial angular momentum vector L [4]

~cm of the center of mass of the system?

(b) What is the final linear velocity V [3]

~ f of the combined system with respect to O. Express your

(c) Find the final angular momentum vector L
answer in terms of Vcm , f , M and R. [8]

(d) For what value of v0 is f zero? Briefly justify how you arrive at the answer. [5]
