LIGHTING CALCULATION

FOR BOH AREAS

BOH AREAS OF THE BUILDING CAN BE :

- Basement parking.
- Plant room.
- Circulation.
- Staircase.
- Storage.
- Staff room.
- Other technical spaces, etc.
REQUIRED ILLUMINATION

There are some international standards for required illumination, such as :

- IES (Illuminating Engineering Society of North America).

- CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers).
- ISO 8895-1

The lighting designer should discuss with Client for required illumination and get the
agreement from Client.
LIGHT FITTING IP RATING

When choosing lighting fixtures for commercial or industrial building, the IP rating
specification should reflect the environmental conditions the light fitting is likely to
experience.

- The first digit of the IP code (protection against touching of live parts & access of
solid items/bodies) will primarily be used to refer to the level of dust / debris
protection of the light source in the housing (some industrial environments will have
very high level of particulates).

- The second digit of the IP code (protection against the harmful ingress of liquids) will
be used to prevent the possibility of internal short circuiting of the light wiring &
ballast by liquid - this is a possibility due to on-site industrial processes emitting
liquid sprays, cleaning routines using water jets etc.
DEFINITION OF FIRST IP DIGIT FOR LIGHTING FIXTURE

0 The lighting fixture has no special protection.

1 The lighting fixture has protection against solid objects greater than 50mm.
2 The lighting fixture has protection against solid objects greater than 12mm in diameter.
3 The lighting fixture has protection against solid objects greater than 2.5mm in diameter.
4 The lighting fixture has protection against solid objects greater than 1mm in diameter.
5 The lighting fixture has protection against harmful dust.
6 The lighting fixture is totally dust tight.

DEFINITION OF SECOND IP DIGIT FOR LIGHTING FIXTURE

0 The lighting fixture has no special protection.

1 The lighting fixture has protection against dripping water.
2 The lighting fixture has protection against water droplets deflected up to 15o from vertical.
3 The lighting fixture has protection against spraying water up to 60o from vertical.
4 The lighting fixture has protection against spraying water from all directions.
5 The lighting fixture has protection against low pressure water jets (all direction).
6 The lighting fixture has protection against strong water jets (all direction).
7 The lighting fixture has protection against temporary immersion in water.
8 The lighting fixture has protection against prolonged effects of immersion under pressure.

LIGHTING DESIGN AND CALCULATION USING SOFTWARE

Nowaday, the lighting designer normally use software for calculation instead of by manual.

There are many lighting design software, but DIALux maybe is the most popular. This is a free-ware
but very useful for lighting designer.

There are 2 version of DIALux : DIALux and DIALux Evo.

DIALux Evo is better for lighting designer but for BOH areas, we just need DIALux due to easier to
use, faster, slower PC requirements.
BASIC STEPS FOR LIGHTING DESIGN USING DIALux
STEP 1 : Prepare the CAD layout.

STEP 2 : Insert New Room

STEP 3 : Load DWG file into DIALux.
STEP 4 : Edit room geometry base on DWG.
STEP 5 : Insert room elements (ceilings, columns, windows, doors, other objects) and furnitures, etc (if
needed) to comple the architectural model.

STEP 6 : Insert Textures if we have information, if not, just leave it as defaut.

STEP 7 : Insert luminaires.
STEP 8 : Create and edit Light Scenes and Control Groups.
STEP 9 : Star Calculation and viewing Calculation Results.
STEP 10 : If the calculation is ok, enjoy your creature. If not, modify whatever you want and enjoy.
