Callaway, Azusa. Literature Review: The Growing Need to Understand Muslim Students.
Multicultural Perspectives, vol. 12, no. 4, 2010, pp. 217-222.
This article comes from the twelfth volume of the journal Multicultural Perspectives.
This particular part of the journal is written by Azusa Callaway, a PhD student at the school of
education at Georgia State University. Ms. Callaways article addresses a variety of topics, such
the changing population of Islam, diversity amongst Muslims, and the parental values of Muslim
parents. While Azusa Callaway may not be well known, she cites a total of 28 sources, which
makes this work credible. The article relates to our topic as it gives direct data and information
on the current status of Muslim education in America, and offers ways to make the American
education system better for Muslim students. This article helps us understand the critical inquiry
question What is the source of the fear that causes discrimination against Muslims, as the
article states People in the West often link terrorism to Muslims, particularly in the aftermath of
the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon (p. 93). The media
have played a large part in presenting these images. Little effort has been made to present a
positive image of American Muslims in the media and textbooks. This bit of information is
instrumental on showing where some of the fear of Islam stems from.

Sabry, Nermin Said, and Bruna, Katherine Richardson. Learning from the Experience of
Muslim Students in American Schools: Towards a Proactive Model of School-
Community Cooperation. Multicultural Perspectives, vol. 9, no. 3, 2007, pp. 44-50.
This paper was from the ninth volume of the journal Multicultural Perspectives. The
paper is written by Katherine Richardson Bruna and Nermin Said Sabry, who is a member of the
Muslim community herself. These authors document and describe the challenges faced by
Muslims in the American education system. Seeing as they cite a plethora of sources, it is
reasonable to deem their work credible. The information provided in the paper relates to our
topic as it gives firsthand accounts of the struggles of Muslim students, as they interview
multiple students, parents, and teachers, as well as Sabry adding her own experiences. This paper
helps us understand the critical inquiry question What could colleges do to better accommodate

Muslim practices, such as daily prayer, as it gives numerous suggestions towards fixing the
issue, such as social workers, increased roles of counselors and mediators, or re-emphasizing the
role of Muslim parents in their childs educational career. This paper gives us great starting
points and ideas as to how we can improve Muslim students connection to their religion.
