Fall Final Essay 2015

Over the past two hundred and twenty-six years, the United States has seen

forty-four presidents. Each bringing many attributes and some, bringing more harm

than good. Although the U.S. has had presidents who have let the country down,

we have had many productive presidents, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore

Roosevelt, and William Henry Harrison. The most effective president the U.S. has

seen, however, is Abraham lincoln. While president, Lincoln issued the

Emancipation Proclamation, and ended slavery.

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on

January 1, 1863, as the U.S. was in its third year of the Civil War. The

proclamation stated ...that all persons held as slaves held within these said

designated United States are, and henceforward shall be free. Although the

Emancipation Proclamation didn't immediately free slaves because it only applied

to areas behind Confederate lines, outside the Union control, it changed the

meaning of the war into a fight for freedom for slaves. This speaks to president

Lincolns effectiveness as a president, because this proclamation was the beginning

of the end of slavery.

In addition to the Emancipation proclamation, Lincoln was invited to be a

speaker at a ceremony held in a cemetery in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. From this

highly acclaimed speech known as the Gettysburg Address, president Lincoln

concluded with ... we highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in

vainthat this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedomand that

government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from this

earth. This brief, influential speech helped people realize that the United States

was just that: united, not divided. This speech gave hope and empowered people

across the nation, and to this day is reviewed as one of the most famous speeches

in history.

Out of so many great presidents the United states have had, Abraham

Lincoln is by far the most effective. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation

beginning the end of slavery, spoke the Gettysburg Address inspiring many people

even years after he has passed. A great leader isnt someone who just keeps a

nation afloat, they are someone who inspires and stands up for what is morally

right.
