A Message from the AMSA
President
Daphne C. Watkins

I t is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 25 th

Annual Interdisciplinary Conference of the American Mens Studies Association

(AMSA).

Compared to other organizations, particularly those that are more discipline-specific,
AMSA has not been around very long. However, as I reflect on the accomplishments that
the organization has had over the years, I am proud to call AMSA my interdisciplinary
home. There is so much for us to be proud of as an organization. When our founders
conceived an interdisciplinary group of scholars, activists, students, and practitioners
who would hone the critical study of men and masculinities twenty-five years ago, I
would imagine that they were thinking of you and your passion for improving the world's
understanding of boys and men. Your presence here at our 25th Annual Conference
speaks volumes. It means that you not only believe in the mission and vision of the
organization, but that you are willing to be at the front lines. When I joined AMSA a
decade ago, it was because I did not want to limit myself to the possibilities that lie in
understanding my work with men exclusively from the perspective of one discipline.
Instead, I wanted to maximize my understanding and passion for helping men,
particularly men of color, from a multitude of disciplines. Gleaming pearls of wisdom
from each discipline would allow my work to not only be impactful, but life changing. I
imagine that you share my passion for the critical study of men and masculinities and my
desire to make a difference.

In our current political climate, it will be important for us to maintain our front line
position. I see this conference as a way for us to do just that. We are not here this
weekend to celebrate the end of our 25 years of work, but rather the beginning of our
next 25-year commitment to developing the critical studies of men and masculinities
globally and through the advancement of our feminist-inspired scholarship. As an
organization, AMSAs goal is to provide a forum for teachers, researchers, students,
artists, and practitioners to collaborate and support one another in a mutually

3
empowering environment. These values are reflected in this conference, as well as in our
scholarship, and most importantly in you... all of you.

So keep this in mind as you participate in our plenaries, concurrent sessions, and interact
with others who are here with you, at the front lines. Welcome to AMSA, and the
beginning of our future.

A Message from the AMSA Conference Chairs
Jan Deeds & Mark Justad

Welcome to Ann Arbor and AMSAs 25th anniversary celebration! It
seemed only fitting to hold this years conference at our institutional home,
the University of Michigan School of Social Work (UM-SSW). Building this
relationship with UM-SSW has provided an important source of support for
AMSA and established mens studies as an important field of study at this
institution.

As we celebrate this quarter century milestone we focus this conference
on exploring what has been accomplished and to ask Whats next? for the
interdisciplinary and critical study of men and masculinities. To reflect our
theme of Honoring our history, imagining our future, several 25 years of
panels will feature scholars from diverse backgrounds and generations to
discuss how thinking on men and masculinities has changed on topics such as education,
violence, mens health. Preconference workshops on Thursday allow participants to
focus on publishing, teaching, or relationships, followed by our opening session, a panel
discussion of 25 years of Mens Studies.

Reflecting AMSAs multidisciplinary approach to the critical study of men and
masculinities, this year we have invited Jericho Brown to be our poet in residence, and
Chris Haywood to deliver the Sam Femiano Keynote Lecture in Mens Studies. Dr.
Brown will teach two workshop sessions for AMSA writers to polish their creative works,
and present An Evening with Jericho Brown on Saturday night featuring his award
winning poetry.

Dr. Haywoods keynote lecture is titled, Challenging Connections: Thinking
through men, masculinity and the values of AMSA. This lecture focuses on making
connections between the values held by AMSA and our engagement with men and
masculinity in academic and professional contexts. Drawing from examples in his
research on masculinity including education and schooling, Islamophobia and ethnicity
and anonymous sex seeking, Chris will focus on key challenges in making such
connections. Dr. Haywood will suggest future directions for AMSA and the study of men
and masculinities in light of our history to this point.

6

Beginning Friday morning and going through Sunday noon scholars and activists
from around the world will present panels, workshops and papers from a variety of
disciplines and perspectives. Opportunities to meet new colleagues and become more
engaged in AMSAs work happen throughout the conference. Join the AMSA Board of
Directors for a box lunch on Friday, and enjoy discussions about the many ways you can
become more involved with and influence AMSA's work. Before the Friday night dinner
all students are invited to a special welcome, hosted by students from the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln and Hampden Sydney College, and international participants are
invited to a welcome hosted by Danielle Nahon and Alvaro Ojalvo.

This conference would not have been possible without the assistance of the
Conference Planning and the Frankel Scholarship Selection Committees: Jonathan Allan,
Jeff Cohen, Mark Geisler, Alex Hines, Alvaro Ojalvo, Don Conway-Long, and Vicki
Sommer. Special thanks to the 25 year panel organizers, Jamie Mitchell, Robert Heasley,
Elizabeth Deis, and Cliff Leek. AMSA President Daphne Watkins provided valuable
guidance, and our office support staff, Administrative Assistant Aesha Mustafa and
work-study Anna Shires were truly the backbone of this conference.

We genuinely value your participation in this conference and in all of AMSAs
work. We know for many AMSA members this conference feels like a homecoming, so if
this is your first conference, welcome, and if its one of many, welcome home!

2017 Conference Keynote Address
& Femiano Lecture in Mens Studies*

Friday, March 31, 2016, 7 9:00 pm, Ross School of Business, Executive Center,
Colloquium Room, 6th Floor

Challenging Connections: Thinking through men, masculinity and the values of
AMSA

Dr. Chris Haywood, Director of Research for the School of Arts and Culture, Newcastle
University

The Sam Femiano Keynote lecture for the 25th Anniversary of the
American Mens Studies Association provides an opportunity to use
the spirit embedded in the history of the organization to speak to our
current and future explorations of men and masculinity. This keynote
focuses on making connections between the values held by AMSA
and our engagement with men and masculinity in academic and
professional contexts. Drawing from examples in my own research on
masculinity including education and schooling, Islamophobia and
ethnicity and anonymous sex seeking, I focus on three key challenges
in making such connections. These are the significance of active
listening to those we work with; the centrality of social context in developing our understanding;
and importance of going beyond the limits of what we are able to know. Despite (or because of)
its diverse disciplinary and professional heritage, Men and Masculinity Studies has emerged as an
active vibrant voice in the academy and broader social and cultural spheres. I am therefore
suggesting that in order to sustain our current and future academic vitality, it is important to
continue to reflect on past imaginings and re-engage them, as part of a constant renewal of what
we know and what we are able to know about men and masculinity.

*Sam Femiano (1932-2009) was a founding member of AMSA and a

mentor and friend to the Board and to those entering the field of
Mens Studies. As a therapist, Sam was a passionate supporter of
developing a critical social discourse on men and masculinity. He
served two terms as AMSA President and two terms as AMSA
Treasurer & Secretary. He also held a seat as an elected member of the

10
AMSA Board of Directors from 1991-2009. Sam contributed immeasurably to the development
of AMSA and to its efforts to develop and sustain the critical study of men and masculinities in a
rigorous, open-minded, inclusive and mutually supportive manner. This fund is established in
honor of Sam and stands as a memorial for Sam and other individuals making significant
contributions to the work of the American Mens Studies Association.

The Samuel Femiano Mens Studies Lecture Fund is an endowment created to support an
invited Mens Studies plenary lecture each year at AMSAs Annual Conference. Individuals are
invited to contribute to this fund that has raised approximately 60% of its $20,000 goal. Gifts
may be given by clicking on the Contribute button on the AMSA web page. The individual
invited to deliver the Femiano Lecture in Mens Studies is selected by the AMSA President in
consultation with the Program Committee and is chosen because he or she is a scholar, teacher,
author, clinician or practitioner whose work contributes substantially to the field of Mens
Studies.

Friday, March 31, 2017 Meditation Session 5:45 6:45pm
Meditation Session UM Museum of Art
The AMSA conference is an energizing space that offers many opportunities for active intellectual engagement
with colleagues. We also recognize and value the importance of taking time for self-care and introspection. In
this regard, we are pleased to offer a 1-hour meditation session facilitated by Jeff Cohen, an AMSA member
who has been practicing in Vipassana and Bompu/Gedo Zen traditions for over ten years. Whether you are a
seasoned practitioner, complete beginner or somewhere in between, please join us in taking some time to just
breathe." The session will begin with a brief overview of postures. This will be followed by a 30-minute
guided meditation and end with a conversation about the role of meditative/contemplative practices in our
personal and professional lives.

Participants will meet near the Museum Store, which is just inside the Frankel Family Wing entrance
on South State Street.
