Online Point of Sale (POS) System for


Melmaray Hardware using PHP and MySQL

Abstract

This project is aimed at developing a complete Online Ordering System for use of
Melmaray Hardware which

will allow the owners to quickly and easily manage an online transaction where a
customer can browse and use

to place orders with just a few clicks. The customers will have to choose whether they
want the order to be

delivered to them or it will be packaged for pick up and the payment method will be upon
delivery or pick up.

There will be a system administrator who will have the right to add and manage user
accounts, a manager who

will be managing product and orders and last but not least an outsourced courier
company who will be dealing

specifically with pending deliveries. The customer will be in a position to view the
products, register and place

an order. There will be a confirmation receipt for each and every order made by the
customer which can be printed.

The development of this system will be based on System Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
with PHP and HTML as

the programming languages while MySQL server as the database of the system. HTML
language is

advantageous due to its easy to use and learn validation properties while MySQL has
better advanced features

and properties, has good security, is open source and has cross platform operability. The
advantages of using

PHP programming language in developing this system include:


It is a stable open source language developed and maintained by a large group of
PHP

developers which help in creating a support community and abundant extension


library.

Its easy and quick to learn and use

Can be run on many platforms thus easy for users to find hosting service

Chapter I
Introduction

1.0 Background of the Study

Recently, people have been relying on the benefits that technology is offering.
Technology is derived from

discoveries of man; therefore, it includes the use of both primitive and highly advanced
tools and methods of

works. The inventions and the development of technology permitted people to expand
their work at the

shortest possible time. With the assistance of technology, people are now using the most
important and most

highly developed machine man has ever invented: the computer. Computer has changed
the way people work

specially in the field of industry and commerce. Most businesses have used this in
carrying out different

business transactions. Computer has been greatly valued for its skill to execute tasks
more hastily and more
accurately than any human being had. These tasks include solving numerical
calculations, storing necessary

information, and organizing files that can be used by management and other
departments in the company in

making economic decisions. However, even with the existence of these highly developed
technologies, some

business firms still prefer the manual system, which requires more effort, time, costs, and
resources, because

of its simplicity. Yet, it is apparent that as the business gets larger, its processes becomes
complicated and thus

requires a more convenient tool, which will help attain the companys goals and
objectives.

Organizations have to consider, acquire, allocate and control certain factors which are
necessary to achieve

these goals and objectives. Opening your store to online customers, being one of these
factors, has always

been a major preoccupation for the companys survival and growth. The aim of this online
ordering system is to

get hold of new customers at the lowest possible cost, given the objectives to ensure
uninterrupted supplies

for on-going operations. When making decisions on transactions, management has to find
a compromise

between the different cost components, such as the costs of supplying inventory,
inventory-holding costs and

costs resulting from insufficient inventories One example of a business that has a wide
range of inventories

and still employs a manual system is Melmaray Hardware, which was established
wayback 1995. It is operated

by the owner himself, Mr. Eduardo Melmaray. Melmaray Hardware offers a variety of
construction supplies

which has different classes for each item. Since then, this Hardware is openly open for
local customers and

uses manual inventory system in keeping its inventory records.


2.0 Statement of the Problem

The proponent would like to develop the online ordering system to address the following
problems of

Melmaray Hardware:

How can Melmaray Hardware keep pace with the modernization?

To keep pace with the modernization, there should be room for improvement in the field
of information

technology. Nowadays, companies shift from manual to computerize primarily because of


advantages brought

by the use of computers.

How can Melmaray Hardware maximize the use of personal computers and
internet?

In all business ventures, it is a must to use the resources to the best advantage. Using
the internet to open the

store to online customers and using computers to manage inventory and sales.

How can Melmaray Hardware help in the companys daily operation?

With these problems, the proponent aims to achieve the following objectives:
To computerize the ordering system of Melmaray Hardware

To monitor the integration of different operations, which includes order database


system, pricing
database system and payment and billing database system, there is a need for
computerization. It
would be convenient for Melmaray Hardware to get information fast and accurately.
Furthermore,
there would be consistent operations and procedures.

3.0 Significance of the Study

With the implementation of an Online Ordering System of Melmaray Hardware, the owner
will be able to

closely monitor its inventory and sales flows, accurate and updated reports, systematic
record keeping and

other intangible advancement thus providing quality service to their old and new
customers.

Specifically, information offered by the study would be greatly beneficial to the following:

Customer. This system will provide them an accurate information, fast transaction
and accessibility.

General Manager. This system will provide him with accurate, speedy and
updated information and reports, keep track with the movements of inventories
and efficient flow of sales transactions used in decision making.

Employees. This system will help them in the effective and efficient performance
of their tracks more
specifically in the recording and monitoring of sales and inventory transactions as
well as the preparations of reports.

Researcher. This system will serve to a more in depth development and


implementation of sales and inventory system and related studies.
4.0 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The scope of this system is to provide user efficient working environment and more
output can be generated

through this. This system provides user friendly interface resulting in knowing each and
every features of the

system. Specifically, in sales, it involves computation of the daily sales, weekly, monthly
and yearly, it shows

inventory transaction of purchase, it can add new stock products and it secures the
storage of records and its

maintainability.

The system will not cover the entire enterprises needs, the said system will help to ease
only some of the

difficulties of the enterprises. The system generates only reports, calculate and adding
stock and securing the

data which always been lost during the manual report.

The system cant generate a report through email or cannot add another system to
another computer, in other

words cant connect to another computer to review the data.
