I love the student engagement here AND that they really want more ownership to read at their tables. The first ask
was fun to get kids amped up, and the second ask was practical for the silent vote. Great way to offer students
choice in how they receive the learning to empower them!

Taco Head is such a fun story and culturally relevant for tons of kids in the room. Even if it's not their culture, the
universal themes in the text (feeling left out or different) are very relevant to all middle school students.

Positive framing!

Excellent gradual release in the design of your lesson plan! Students got time to practice using the graphic
organizer with a simple story to build confidence, and afterwards are more willing to try it out on their own with a
different text. You make something as complex as theme, which our students often struggle with, concrete through
the modeling, graphic organizer, and then later 1:1 conferencing with students.

I love that this student (Anthony I think?) is able to self-manage his behavior with your support. This is an
excellent example of accommodations that work for the student and for the teacher. He is totally on top of his
work and learning during whole group, and then seamlessly (without any cue from you) moves up for group work
and is a productive member of that group!

I know it's hard to see here, but this may be one of the best graphic organizers I've designed. It's simple, chunks
the different components of finding theme with guiding questions, and takes a lot of the confusion away for even
my lowest students.

It's been really important to me this year to release learning to my students. There was a lot of teacher-talk at the
beginning of the year. Now, lessons are planned to empower students to take charge themselves.

It's interesting to see just how much I move as I teach. Circulation serves two great purposes though: the
opportunity to make sure students are all on task and engaged, and the opportunity to get up my steps!

Noticing you can see one of my students shifted from the very back table to the back center table. He's a bright
kid, but he can get distracted during Do Now and instructional time by his neighbors. We've worked out an
agreement where he starts class on his own but completes group work with the table in the center. It means that we
get to avoid the re-directions and jump right into learning.

I'm actually really glad that the students chose to read in small groups. It gave me the chance to circulate the room
and see how each of them were doing and work with tables that were struggling a bit with the concept. With these
two, I was able to ask more guiding questions than others would have needed.

Offering student choice when possible is the best for student accountability. I can always remind them if they get
off task that they choose this option and that there's another, less pleasant one, if they don't hold up their end of
the deal!

Listen, student jobs are my favorite things. My attendance manager used to be one of my most off-task students.
Now, he's getting his Do Now done early enough to get attendance checked before ADA and carrying that
momentum on throughout class! Such a win!

This whole table is a victory! These guys have struggled with attendance and participation all year, but using some
of our relationship building techniques has gotten them to at least give the work a try! After this, they told me that
the work was easy, and they believed they could do it!

I'm glad the relationship building has worked! Your classroom environment is SO positive over all - it's
lovely! The students are clearly comfortable here, you're very supportive and in your element, and the
positivity j ust flows throughout the room. When you do have to redirect, it's well received.

Cold-calling! I have a ton of bright students who are gun-shy when it comes to raising their hands. They know that
we have a vocal minority that will speak up. Using table numbers means that my shyest students don't feel
attacked, but their answer can still be heard by conferencing with their more comfortable table-mates.

This is one of my favorite TLAC strategies: Precise Praise! It gives an opportunity to positively reinforce good
behavior and gives other students a drive to comply! It also cuts down on the amount of time I spend fussing at
students.

So, this is such a simple thing, but just passing out papers during Do Now time has smoothed out my transitions a
lot! There's much less opportunity for off task behavior.

ANOTHER TLAC strategy! And yes, it is such a game changer :)

This was a fun lesson to plan! I love bringing in Aesop's fables to teach theme. Before you got in, we read The
Lion & the Hare. This was the model I used to re-teach theme (we hadn't touched on it since before our writing
unit) before I released them to find theme in "Taco Head".
