Emergency Meeting The enduring members of the General National Congress (GNC) of Libya, unsatisfied with their loss of influence and current critical economic situation, had, five days ago, seized control of an oil extraction and refinery facility with a processing capacity of 10,000 bbl/d in the city of Brega near the Libyan coast on the Mediterranean. Soon after, the Government of National Accord (GNA), with the prompt sending troops to the region, managed to reestablish control over the the facility. However, in the process, they have been accused of harming and causing the deaths of multiple innocent civilians, many of which were being held captive within the facility or found themselves in the surrounding area. President Donald Trump of the United States, concerned with the current situation in the region, has stated that tremendous harm has been done; harm the U.S. must respond to, and that, therefore, military advisors will be sent to Libya to investigate the situation and solve that mess. To many in the international community, the sending of military advisors is no less than euphemistic language for the sending of military troops, seeing that armed soldiers do compose a significant portion of the group. To the Libyan GNA, the interpretation has been no different; they have denied the proposal made by President Trump to help and solve that mess, yet, as stated by the president, theyre going anyway. WikiLeaks has just now released a series of confidential CIA documents on the agencys involvement in Northern Africa and the Middle East. Among them is a meeting report that suggests American and a unknown third partys involvement with members of the GNC, possibly indicating some form of participation from the CIA in the attack. Doubts have thus emerged with respect to who was truly responsible for the multiple casualties in the incident. French media sources have stated that, in doing so, the United States has been promised access to Libyan oil (among the largest in all of Africa) by the GNC. Many have interpreted this as another American attempt to gain influence in an oil-rich nation around the world. President Trump has denied all accusations. The Human Rights Watch has just released an internal report for the Security Council stating that, in the process of investigating human rights abuses in the country, they located two shipments in possession of the GNC containing weapons. After conducting thorough investigation of the weapons country of origin, two nations have been identified as the fabricators of the weapons: the United States and Russia.
