My name is Kenneth To. I am a curious and innovative

person. I am genuinely interested in the media produc-
tion especially in the post-production ield because I
ind it is very interesting in the making of media pro-
duction. Through originally in bits and pieces, were put
together, the inal product represents everyones goal
and efforts.

I am obsessed with making new things when my new

ideas come up. In the past few years, I have been
actively involved in different activities that are related to
media production.

I am always striving to do better. I was inspired by

Steve Jobs and my favourite saying is Stay Hungry,
Stay Foolish. In my opinion, possessing passion is not
enough, it is also important to have sustained learning
and be humble so that you can keep creating amazing
things.

Title: Lego Animation

It is a 10-second animation. Generally Speaking, it is a mov-

ing long shot from a window to the street. 10 second, but it
took us few weeks to inish the whole animation. I would like
to share about the preparation works.

Pre-production

10-second is a challenging time for video. The animation must

be interesting enough to draw attention from the audience in
this 10 seconds. We tried to build colorful visual to the scene
as there are total 6 lego models (including a dog).

A French photographer Samsofy Pardugato inspired us with

some interesting photos. So, we decide to build an imagina-
tive lego world showing the legos and their daily lives.

Modeling & Texturing

Modeling is the fundaments of an animation. It is important to

get the precise scale and shape of objects so we have done
a lot of research. We have also found many source images
for reference before building models texture. As you can see,
different style of clothes showing the different roles of legos.
Lighting 4
After modeling and texturing, I have to add lights into the scene. As you
can see, igure 1F compares a scene with and without lights and there is
a big difference after adding lights. In my opinion, lighting is the most dii-
cult part in the whole project. In order to stimulate the real world, you have
to understand where lights come from and how they diffused and relected.

Otherwise, the shadows would be very weird and the scene would be awful
at the inal stage.

Camera movement

Like making a video, after inishing the modeling and lighting, you have to
control the camera movement to tell the story. Since it is 10-second long, I
Fig.1B Lego Dog model prefer using a long shot rather than a few close-up or medium shots to tell
the story. Setting up camera movement in a virtual world is more lexible
and interesting.

Conclusion

I am also the compositor of the project. After rendering images, I have to

put them into sequence and adding sound effects to make the inal output.
Fig.1C Street scene I enjoyed the making of animation very much and after this project, I really
appreciate the efforts by the crew in media ield. They have put a lot of
efforts and time in order to entertain us.

Building models has improved my art sense. In order to master

the modeling skill, I have to observe more to get the details of
an object. What is more, building models has also improved my
perseverance. I used to give up easily. However, after inishing
my irst gundam model, it has brought me a huge satisfaction
and this has made me keep building new models.

I was fascinated with animation after inishing the 10s

lego animation(p.3). I want to get a deeper under-
standing in animation aspect so I started with model-
ing basic and try to build some character models.

Apart from the content, characters are perhaps the

most important aspect of an animation. Character
modeling is an advanced level of modeling after you
can build the basic shape of an object. I love to build
models in my spare time so that I can master the
modeling skills in order to produce some interesting
character models in the future.

I volunteered as a student production assistant in the

holiday. The day camp is to help those marginalized
teenagers to voice their opinions by taking a 1-minute
video. My role is mainly to support the video trainers to
facilitate the day camp. Moreover, we are responsible
for instructing the participants to ilm.

It is a meaningful activity and I have learned a lot. It

is challenging to present your story in 1 minute. So,
the message of the video must be clear and you must

Sometimes, I worked as a freelance videographer

and photographer, being a freelancer, I have
met many counterparts, this makes me have a
deeper and comprehensive understanding about
the media ield. In addition, by doing this job,
I realized that communication is very important
when you are making any media products. I have
to communicate with different people and this has
developed me some communication skills.

I like to take photos and videos in my spare time, I think

taking photos or videos can inspire me in a different
way. You need to observe before you press the shutter,
it makes you imagine and think. Your creativity is boost-
ed during the process. I made a drone video last year.
It shows the other side of Lion Rock because I want to
show foreigners that Hong Kong also have many won-
derful and magniicent places in the countryside.
