Inthe28thverseofthechapterAtTawbah,itisstated
thatthepolytheistsareunclean.Itisstatedthatallofthe
grandfathersofourProphet(PBUH)areclean.

ThefollowingisstatedinthechapterAshShuara:Wa
taqallubakafissajidin.

Thatis,andthymovementsamongthosewhoprostrate
themselves.WhenthescholarsofAhlasSunnahinterpreted
thatverse,theysaidallofhisparentswerebelievers.After
thehadithsthatstateallofhisgrandfathersareclean
believersreported,thefollowingisstatedatthebeginningof
thebookMawahibalLadunniyyah:

IbnAbbassays:

"Itransferredyoufromthegenerationofoneprophettothe
generationofanotherprophet.Ifafatherhadtwosons,the
MessengerofAllahdescendedfromtheonethathadthe
prophethood."

Thefollowingisstatedinahadith:"Youdescendfromthe
bestmenofeachcentury."[Bukhari]

"AllahchoseKinanaamongthesonsofIsmael,theQuraysh
amongthesonsofKinanaandsonsofHashimamongthe
Quraysh.AndHechosemeamongthem."[Muslim]

"Idescendfromthebestpeople.Myancestorsarethebest
people."[Tirmidhi]

"AllahchosemeamongthedistinguishedpeopleofArabia.I
descendfromthebestpeople."[Tabarani]

"Noneofmygrandparentscommittedfornication.Idescend
fromthebestfathersandcleanmothers.Ifoneofmy
grandfathershadtwosons,Idescendedfromthebetter
one."[Mawahib]

"AllofmyancestorsbeginningfromHazratAdamwere
marriedcouples.Iamthebestofyouintermsofancestors."
[Daylami]

"Iamthemosthonorablepersonamongpeople.Iamnot
sayingitinordertoboast."[Daylami]

[Thatis,Iaminformingyouaboutthetruthitismydutyto
informyouaboutthetruthifIdonotmentionit,Iwillbe
regardedtohavefailedtofulfillmyduty.]

ThoseHadithsandtheverseinthechapterashShuara
indicatethatallofthegrandparentsofourProphet(
)arecleanbelievers.

Sinceunbelieversaredirty,itisimpossibleforthefatherof
HazratIbrahimtobecomeanunbeliever.

MullahJamisays:"Aholylightshoneontheforeheadof
HazratAdambecausehehadaparticleofMuhammad
(PBUH).ThatparticlewastransferredtoHazratEve,to
HazratSethfromherandthentocleanwomenfromclean
menandtocleanmenfromcleanwomen.Thatholylight
wastransferredtoforeheadsfromforeheadstogetherwith
thatparticle."[Shawahid]

ThatHolylightwasnottransferredtoanunbelieverortoa
believerwhocommittedfornication.Therefore,Azarwas
NOTthefatherofHazratIbrahim(AS).
ThenameofHazratIbrahimsfatherwasTaruh.

Azarwashisuncleandstepfather.
Azarwashisuncleandstepfather.

Inthe74thverseofthechapteralAnam,thefollowingis
stated,"Ibrahimsaidtohisfather,Azar,..."Itisrecordedin
theinterpretationofBaydawithatherethewordfatheris
usedasatfalbayan(anextrawordtoexplain).When
someonehastwonames,andwhentheyarebothused,itis
understoodthatoneofthemisnotfamousbutthesecond
oneisfamous.

Thesecondoneismentionedinordertoclarifythe
ambiguityinthefirstone,whichisnotfamous.Thesecond
oneiscalledatfalbayan.

HazratIbrahim(AS)callstwopeoplefather.Thefirstone
ishisownfather,andthesecondoneishisstepfather,who
isalsohisuncle.Accordingtotherulesoflaconicusage,
rhetoricandfluency,themeaningoftheverseis:

IbrahimsaidtohisfatherwhosenamewasAzar.Ifithad
notbeenso,itwouldhavebeenenoughtosay,"Hesaidto
Azaror"Hesaidtohisfather."

IfAzarhadbeenhisrealfather,thewordhisfatherwould
havebeenextra.Weneversay,Myfather,Ali,iscomingbut
wesay,Myfatheriscoming.

IntheQuran,theUncleiscalledtheFather.

HazratIsmaelistheuncleofHazratJacob(Yaqub).
However,intheQuran,yourfatherIsmaelisusedinstead
ofyouruncleIsmael.HischildrensaytoHazratYaqub,
"thyfathersofAbrahamIsmaelandIsaac..."(alBaqara,
2/133)thatis,"yourfatherIbrahim,yourfatherIsmaeland
yourfatherIsaac...".Asamatteroffact,HazratIsmaelis
HazratYaqubsuncle,notfather.Itisstatedinthe
interpretationsthatintheQuran,theuncleiscalledthe
father.

Itiscustomarytocalltheuncle,thestepfather,thefatherin
lawandcharitablepeopleasfathernotonlyamongArabs
butalsoamongothernations.
Wecallpeoplewhohelpothersasfatherorfatherofthe
poorfiguratively.Wealsocalloldpeoplefathertoshow
respecttothem.

ItisknownthatoldpeoplearecalledMother
Aisha,MotherFatimaorMotherHaji.

Whenwecallthemso,itdoesnotmeanthattheyareour
fathersormothers.Theyareusedtoshowrespect.

Wealsocalloldmenuncle,grandfather,andoldwomen
aunt,grandmotheralthoughtheyarenotourrelatives.

Accordingly,althoughtherealfatherofHazratYaqub
(pbuh)wasHazratIsaac,HazratYaqub(pbuh)was
addressedyourfatherIsmaelintheQuran.

Inhisbook,Kitabuddarjilmunifa,ImamSuyutiproves
thatAzarisHazratIbrahimsunclewithevidence
andresources.


TheProphetIbrahimuponourProphetMuhammadanduponhim
andtheirfamilies,beAllahssalaatandsalaamwasthesonof
Terah.ThisismentionedinGenesis11:2627,andGenesis11:31.

IbnKathirconfirmsinhisStoriesoftheProphetsthatthisisthe
correctandwidelyheldbeliefamongthehistoriansandbiographers.

Healsosaysthatthemajorityofthegenealogists,amongwhomisthe
CompanionandmostknowledgeableexegeteoftheQuran,Ibn
AbbasradiAllahuanhareagreedthatthenameofIbrahimsfather
isTareh,andthatthePeopleoftheBook,theJewsandtheChristians,
pronounceitTarekh.(2)

SoifIbrahimsfatherisTerah/Tareh/Tarekh,thenwhoisAzar,
whotheQurancallsashisfather?

InSuraMaryam,wearetoldhowhecalledhisfathertothe
religion,but:

Hisfatheranswered,Abraham,doyourejectmygods?Iwillstone
youifyoudonotstopthis.Keepoutofmyway!
Abrahamsaid:Peacebewithyou:IwillbegmyLordtoforgiveyou
HeisalwaysgracioustomebutfornowIwillleaveyou,andthe
idolsyouallprayto,andIwillpraytomyLordandtrustthatmy
prayerwillnotbeinvain.(Q19:4649)

Then,asIbnKathirsays,heaskedAllahtoforgivehisfatherinhis
supplications,butwhenitbecamecleartohimthatheistheenemyof
Allah,hedisassociatedhimselffromhim,astheQuransays:

Abrahamaskedforgivenessforhisfatherbecausehehadmadea
promisetohim,butonceherealizedthathisfatherwasanenemyof
God,hewashedhishandsofhim.Abrahamwastenderheartedand
forbearing.(Q9:114)(3)

Now,inSuratalAnaamoftheQuran,thisfatheriscalled
Azar.

RememberwhenAbrahamsaidtohisfather,Azar,How
canyoutakeidolsasgods?Iseethatyouandyourpeople
haveclearlygoneastray.(Q6:74)

LikewiseinahadithnarratedbytheImamsBukhari,Nasai,
andalBazzar,wearetoldhow:

IbrahimwillmeethisfatherAzarontheDayofRising,uponwhose
faceisdust.Ibrahimwillsaytohim:DidItellyounottodisobey
me?
Sohisfatherwillsaytohim:TodayIwillnotdisobeyyou.
SoIbrahimwillsay:OhLord.Youpromisedmenottodisgracemeon
theDaywhenallpeopleareresurrected,sowhatdisgraceisgreater
thanthatofmyfurthestfather?
SoAllahwillsay:IhavemadeParadiseforbiddenforthekaafireen.

Thishasledmany,includingIbnKathir,tobelieveerroneously
thatAzarisnoneotherthanIbrahimsfatherTarekh,andthathe
possiblyhadtwonames,oroneofthemisarealname,andtheothera
nickname.(4)

However,thispossibilityisdeniedcompletelybytheQuranitself,so
thatitisabsolutelyimpossible.

Aswehaveseenabove,whenIbrahim,alayhiassalam,firstbecamea
Prophet,hecalledAzartothefaith,andAzarrejectedit.Ibrahimleft
him,andcontinuedtoprayforhisguidance,untilitbecameclearto
himthatheisanenemyofAllah,afterwhichhedisownedhim,
disassociatedhimselffromhim,andwashedhishandsofhim.Heno
longeraskedAllahtoforgivehim,fortheenemiesofAllahwillnotbe
forgiven.

AstheQuranitselfsays:

ItisnotfittingfortheProphetandthebelieverstoaskforgivenessfor
theidolatorseveniftheyarerelatedtothemafterhavingbeen
shownthattheyaretheinhabitantsoftheBlaze.Abrahamasked
forgivenessforhisfatherbecausehehadmadeapromisetohim,but
onceherealizedthathisfatherwasanenemyofGod,hewashedhis
handsofhim.
(Q9:113114).

TheQuranistellingtheProphetandhisCompanionstolearnfromthe
exampleofIbrahim,andtostopaskingforgivenessfortheir
disbelievingrelatives.ButinSuratIbrahim,theQurantellsusthat
muchlater,afterIbrahimstrialswithhispeople,andhisleavinghis
homeland,andaftergoingtoMecca,andhiseldestsonIsmailhad
grownupandhelpedhimbuildtheKaaba,heprayedtoAllah:

PraisebetoGod,whohasgrantedmeIshmaelandIsaacinmyold
age:myLordhearsallrequests!Lord,grantthatIandmyoffspring
maykeepuptheprayer.OurLord,acceptmyrequest.OurLord,
forgiveme,myparents,andthebelieversontheDayofReckoning.

SohereweseetheProphetIbrahim,alayhiassalam,askingAllahto
forgivehisparents.Thisisdecadesafterhavingabandonedprayersfor
Azar.ThisisclearproofthatAzarisnotthesamepersonas
IbrahimsactualfatherTarekh.ItshowsthatTarekhand
Ibrahimsmotherwerebelievers.

Furthermore,wehaveherewhatinArabicisknownasatf:
conjunction,orcoupling.Ibrahimjoinedthebelieverstohisparentsin
thedua(5),asifhewassaying:
Forgiveme,myparentsandtherestofthebelievers.

SowhydoesIbrahimcallAzarhisfatherintheQuran?

ThatisbecauseintheArabiclanguage,andinthelanguageofthe
Quranitself,afathercouldbetheactualfatherofaperson,orhis
ancestor,hisuncle,orthepersonwhoraisedoradoptedsomeone.

TheQurantellsusthatwhentheProphetJacobwasonhisdeathbed,
hesaidtohissons,

WhatwillyouworshipafterIamgone?
Theyreplied,WeshallworshipyourGodandtheGodof
yourfathers,Abraham,Ishmael,andIsaac,onesingleGod:
wedevoteourselvestoHim.(Q2:133)

Here,thetermfatherisusedtodescribeYaqoobsactualfatherIs
haaq,hisgrandfatherIbrahim,andhisuncleIsmail,alayhim
assalam.

AndsoastheQurancallsIsmailthefatherofYaqoob,likewiseit
callsAzarthefatherofIbrahim,whentheyaretheiruncles.

AnotherexampleisfoundinthestoryofourProphetMuhammad,salla
Allahualayhiwaaalhiwasallam.

Asiswellknowninthebiographiesandhadithcollections,the
Prophet,attheageof12,traveledwithhisuncle,whohadadoptedhim
andraisedhim,toSyriafortrade.TheretheymetthemonkBahira,
whorecognizedthatthechildisaProphet.

HesaidtoAbuTalib:Whatisthisboysrelationtoyou?
Hereplied:Thisismyson.
SoBahirareplied:Hisfathershouldnotbealive.
Sohesaid:Mynephew.

HerewesawAbuTalibcallinghisnephewmyson.

Likewise,theProphetMuhammadcalledhimhisfather.

Myfatherandyourfatherareinthefire.

AsisnarratedinthehadithcollectionofImamMuslim,amancame
totheProphetandsaid:Whereismyfather?
SotheProphetreplied:Inthefire.

Thenafterthemanwalkedaway,theProphetwantedtoconsolehim,
sohesaidtohim:
Myfatherandyourfatherareinthefire.

Here,theProphetwasreferringtohisuncle(AbuLahab).
AndhisuncleAbuTalibwhoraisedhim.


ImamulHaramainSyedAhmedDhelanMakki(RA)inhis
book:
AsnalMatalibprovedtheImaanofSayadunaAbuTalib.

AllamaalKawthrimentionedinhiseditionsoftheletters(rasa'il)
ofAbuHanifa,keptinDaralKutubalMisriyya,number
24205,that"ThereexistsmanuscriptsofitinMaktabatalFatihinthe
Astana[intheOttomanImpire/presentdayTurkey].

SeerahIbnHisham(collectedbyIbnishaq)isover150years
olderthanBukariMuslimandhisrijalaremuchmore
stronger(seeShibliNomaniandAbuzahraShaykhofAlAzhar's
khatamunnabiyeen)inSeerahibnHishamitreportsahadith
thatHazratAbuTalib(RA)acceptedIslamandreadthe
kalima.Thisbookisthefirstseerahbook.

HowcouldhenotbelievewhenBahira(theMonk)hadtoldhim
thathisnephewwastobeaProphet,andwhenAbuTalibcomposed
manylinesofpoetrypraisinghisnephewsreligionasthebest
religion!

TheHolyProphet()hadsaidinthehadithnarrated
byAbuNuaym:

Allahdidnotceasemovingmefromthetayyibbacks/loins
tothetaahirwombsnotwobranchesbranchedoutofaline
exceptthatIwasinthebestofthem.

Asthescholarssay,onlythebelievingmenandwomenaredescribed
astaahir,andthisshowsthatallofhisancestors,fathersandmothers
fromAdamandEve,toIbrahimsparentsandAbdullahandAminah
werebelievers.(6)

WealsosawtheProphetMuhammad,sallaAllahualayhiwaAlihi
wasallam,callthewifeofAbuTalib,asmymother,justashe
calledAbuTalibhisfather.Whenshediedandhergravewasdugout,
he,sallaAllahualayhiwaAlihiwasallam,wentintoit,laiddownon
it,andprayedtoAllahMostHigh:

OAllah,forgivemymotherFatimabintAsadbytherightofYour
Prophet,andtheProphetsbeforeme,forYouaretheMostMercifulof
themerciful.(7)

Thus,Azar,astheQuran,theSeeraofourProphet,andthehadiths
allshow,wasIbrahimsuncle.ItspossiblethatIbrahimwasraisedby
hisunclejustasourProphetMuhammadwasraisedbyhisuncle,and
asourProphetMuhammadsaid,noonewasmoresimilartoIbrahim
thenhehimself.

ThisisalsoapossibleexplanationofIbrahimsdescribinghimonthe
DayofJudgmentasmyfurthestfather.Someinterpretedtomeanthat
heisfarawayfromme,becauseheisadisbeliever,butitispossiblethat
itmeansthatheisnothisactualfather,butonestepawayfromthat:
hisuncle.

AndhadIbrahimbeenthefleshandbloodsonofAzar,Azarwould
nothavesaidtohim:
Abraham,doyourejectmygods?Iwillstoneyouifyoudo
notstopthis.Keepoutofmyway!

Wouldsomeonestonehisownfleshandblood?

Furthermore,whenAzarhadrejectedIbrahimscall,Ibrahimprayedto
God:

Forgivemyfather,forheisoneofthosewhohavegone
astray,anddonotdisgracemeontheDaywhenallpeople
areresurrected.(Q26:8686)

Noticethatheonlyaskedforgivenessforoneperson.Hadhisparents
beendisbelievers,hewouldnothaveaskedforgivenessonlyforhis
fatherandnotforhismother.
AndlikewiseinthehadithofBukharimentionedabove,Ibrahim
says:

OhLord.YoupromisedmenottodisgracemeontheDay
whenallpeopleareresurrected,sowhatdiscgraceis
greaterthanthatofmyfurthestfather?

HadIbrahimsactualparentsbeendisbelievers,Ibrahimsmother
wouldhavebeenmentionedaswell.Instead,onlyonepersonis
mentioned.

Thisallshowsthatthisonepersoncouldnothavebeenhisactual
father.ForIbrahimprayedforthebelieversandamongthemespecially
hisparentsinhisoldagebysaying:

OurLord,forgiveme,myparents,andthebelieversonthe
DayofReckoning.(Q14:41)

Thisverse,aswediscussedabove,isaloneabsoluteproofthathis
parentswherebelievers,andthatthepersonIbrahimstopped
askingAllahsforgivenessforwassomeoneelsehisuncle.
