This is a study without intravenous or oral contrast, relatively low dose (in CT
terms), and has a very high sensitivity for the detection of renal and ureteric stones.
CT KUB allows a rapid, contrast-free, anatomically accurate diagnosis of urolithiasis
with a sensitivity of 9798% and a specificity of 96100%.
Actual protocol of CT KUB for evaluation of stone disease and hematuria will vary
depending upon institutional guidelines but following are the general parameters.
Data interpretation with the use of axial, coronal, sagittal and sometimes
curved oblique images for proper evaluation.

Limitations of CT KUB include the fact that CT has limited spatial resolution;
therefore, its negative predictive value in fully excluding sub-millimeter calculi and
small stone fragments is significantly less than its negative predictive value in
excluding larger calculi (>4mm). In addition, repeated use of CT in patients with
recurrent urolithiasis can result in a substantial cumulative dose.
