General 0
Only qualified and trained personnel are allowed to perform CT system installation, ser-
vice, maintenance and quality assurance.
To avoid any risk of injury to persons or damage to the system, the safety instructions
must be read and observed in the:
General Safety Notes (TD00-000.860.01.xx.xx)
and
Product-specific safety notes (CT02-025.860.02.xx.xx) (CT02-025.860.02 / Prod-
uct-specific safety notes)
The product-specific safety notes contain important information about:
General safety information about the gantry, patient table, and laser products.
Attachment of screws and nuts, adjustment instructions for torque wrench and use of
Loctite.
Safety advice (Hazard keys)
High voltage
Switch off the main power supply before working on the system
and secure the system against unintended switch-on.
Allow at least two minutes discharge time after switching off the
system. Prior to starting work on the components indicated
below, measure the voltage level in the PDS (right gantry stand)
between D450 X7 and X9 for Spirit, or between fuse holders
F3.2(+) and F4.2(-) for Emotion 6/16 (2007). The voltage must be
below 40 V DC.
Automatic procedures
Radiation protection
Bloodborne pathogens
The adjustments for the PHS and Gantry (e.g. frequency converter for rotation or tilt) are
described in the respective chapter in the document Replacement of Parts Gantry / PHS
(CT02-025.841.03).
IMS adjustments 0
The adjustments for the IMS system (e.g. monitor) are described in the document
Replacement of Parts IMS (CT02-025.841.04) in the respective replacement section.
System-specific information 0
NOTE Only phantoms delivered with the CT system may be used for sys-
tem adjustments.
NOTE The density of the water in the phantom depends on the water
temperature. Changing the water temperature by 1 Kelvin corre-
sponds to changing the water equivalent to 0.3 HU (Hounsfield
Unit) in the CT picture.
The water phantom has to be stored at a constant temperature of
22 3 Celsius!
For measurements, the water temperture in the phantom has to
be 22 3 Celsius!
NOTE Changing the vertical table position always changes the horizon-
tal table position.
Safety 0
NOTE Read and observe the safety information contained in the "Safety
information" section of this document.(Safety Information / p. 8)
Phantoms 0
NOTE To avoid that incorrect adjustment values are created during tune
up, only phantoms delivered with the CT system may be used for
system adjustments.
Also the water phantom has to have the same temperature as that
in the examination room.

Gettering is required after the X-ray tube is replaced or in response to frequent tube arc-
ing.
The getter procedure is used to:
Check the HV behavior of the X-ray tube
Improve the HV stability of the X-ray tube, if insufficient
Guarantee the HV stability of a new X-ray tube
This procedure is also known as conditioning the X-ray tube. After you start the proce-
dure with the voltage selected, the program automatically performs a specific number of
scans. If the tube arcs, the auto repeat function attempts to repeat the scans to obtain a
specific number of scans without arcing. If the tube does not arc during these scans, the
voltage is automatically switched to the next higher kV step. Gettering is completed when
the highest kV step has been performed without tube arcing.

The function of the Z-adjustment is to find the Z-position of the tube collimator where the
maximum signal intensity is measured by the detector.
First, the tube is heated up automatically ( > 1,000 K ). This is followed by a cool-down
phase to a tube temperature of approx. 950 K. After that the Z-adjustment procedure
starts.
The adjustment starts with a defined movement of the tube-side diaphragm toward the
back of the gantry. Measurements are taken incrementally with each position in the oppo-
site direction. The optimal tube diaphragm positions for the low, middle, and high channels
of the detector are determined in static mode (no rotation). In addition, the optimal posi-
tions for two rotation times are determined. During the adjustment, the diaphragm blades
are moved accordingly.

To ensure a maximum output signal for the detector elements, the X-ray beam has to be
centered precisely over the detector. The ZCheck procedure provides you with a quick
check of the X-ray beam alignment.
The reference value of the tube diaphragm determined via ZAdjust is the starting point of
the quick check. The diaphragm is then shifted symmetrically in both Z-directions. The
measured detector element output has to follow symmetrical thresholds, as long as the
Z-adjustment is still within tolerance. This procedure is automatically added to the cus-
tomer "check-up" procedure at specific intervals.

The FocusAli procedure adjusts the electromagnetic focus deflection (flying focal spot)
with respect to the parameters of different:
Rotation times
Integration times of the DMS
Focus size
To determine the electromagnetic behavior of the focus deflection circuit, the following
adjustments are necessary:
Phase: This step determines the synchronization (delay) between the DMS and focus
deflection.
Amplitude: Based on the neutral position, the amplitude of the focus deflection is
determined in mm. With the phase specified, the amplitude is set so that the deflection
equals half the width of one detector element.
Offset: With the phase and amplitude specified, the offset of the focus deflection is set
so that the central beam is exactly in the center of the detector.
The procedure adjusts the settings for phase, amplitude, and offset for all combinations of
these parameters.
NOTE To avoid that incorrect adjustment values are created during tune

The channels of the measurement system have different levels of sensitivity that are com-
pensated for by Air Calibration. Air calibration consists of two major steps, base calibra-
tion and difference calibration.
The objective of base calibration is to determine the changes in sensitivity caused by
present environmental conditions. For this reason, base calibration has to be performed
on a daily basis. This function is selected automatically when the system is switched on.
In addition, the customer can run base calibration under Setup > Calibration, as
required.
The objective of the difference calibration procedure is to determine the structural differ-
ences in sensitivity for the various scan modes (kV, mA, slice width, rotation time, etc.).
For this reason, difference calibration tables are generated during tune-up only.
Air calibration checks whether an absorber is in the X-ray beam. If the message indicates
There may be an object in the scan field... although no absorber is in the X-ray beam, the
reason could be contrast on the plexi strip, a defective channel, or the adjustment of the
collimator box (ZAdjust).

each measurement value is multiplied by a scaling factor during pre-processing. These
scaling factors are determined via the WaterScaling procedure function. The scaling fac-
tors have to be generated for each scan parameter (kV, slice width, etc.).
NOTE Only the original phantoms (delivered with the system) can be
used.
The vertical and horizontal positioning of the phantom is per-
formed automatically at a predefined table height. For this reason,
only the original phantom holder (delivered with the system) can
be used.(Fig. 19 / p. 66)

NOTE When adjusting the collimator box mechanically, at least one alu-
minum foil spacer (part no. 38 15 136) is required.
Procedure 0
The following procedure shows the adjustment on the left collimator side. The adjustment
on the right collimator side (spindle/motor side) has to be performed accordingly.
Working steps:
Switch off the gantry and secure it against unintended switch-on.
Observe the high voltage guidelines
Remove the front funnel and the back funnel of the gantry.
Move the tube into the 6 oclock position.
Engage the mechanical rotation brake.
Release the four screws of the collimator box by approx. 2 mm.
Push the collimator box in the table direction (approx. 2 mm) to obtain the space
needed for inserting the aluminum foil.
Remove the two screws of the collimator box on the side where the aluminum foil has to
be added.
Attention: The view direction of the collimator box is from the table to the gantry.
Insert the aluminum foil according to the ZAdust program (Fig. 30 / p. 95) :
To obtain the correct position of the aluminum foil, the left and right edge of the alumi-
num foil have to be aligned parallel to the collimator box (Fig. 29 / p. 95) .
Insert the two removed screws of the collimator box and tighten them by hand.
Tighten the four screws of the collimator box with a torque of 40 Nm.
Release the mechanical rotation brake.
Switch on the gantry.
Check the new adjustment of the collimator box.
(Note: The Z-Adjust procedure is still running.)
Select Go.
If the message:
"The adjustment of the tube collimator is out of range" appears,
select Cancel and repeat the mechanical adjustment procedure again.
If the message:
"Found tube collimator DISPLACEMENT ..........." is displayed,
select Start rotation in the window:
"The gantry covers are open. Are you sure nobody is inside?"
The Z-adjustment procedure continues.
When the mechanical adjustment of the collimator is successful, cut off the top of the
aluminum foil (the part above the collimator surface) to avoid scratching the back fun-
nel.
Attach the phantom set to the support bracket at the front of the patient table.
Set the gantry tilt to 0 degrees (vertical).
Place a 70 kg weight on the tabletop (at the foot-end of the patient table).
Raise the patient table to a height of 145 mm (display).
Switch on the light markers and position the slice thickness phantom in the measure-
ment field.
Change to service mode Options > Service > Local Service.
Select QualityAssurance.
Select Constancy or Acceptance.
(For installations in Germany, the ACCEPTANCE TEST must be used to satisfy the
requirements set forth in paragraph 16 of the German law for X-ray products.)
Select Go.
Enter your name.
Select Go.
Follow all program sequences.
Position the slice thickness phantom in the measurement field so that light beams of the
interior light markers are centered above the upper cross markins on the phantom.
Perform the measurement and evaluate the Z-position of the measurement phantom in
the slice plane.
The phantom has to be positioned precisely in the Z-direction of the slice plane. The
Z-position is correct when the long and short bars overlap in the tomogram.
Slice thickness 0
Slice thickness is tested using the slice thickness phantom. The phantom contains two
aluminum strips 100 x 25 x 0.2 mm.
The following are prerequisites for accurately determining the slice thickness:
The phantom has to be centered in the measurement field and may not be tilted for-
ward.
The phantom has to be positioned precisely in the Z-direction of the slice plane.
Both aluminum strips have to be positioned horizontally in the tomogram.
The program uses the tomogram to compute the actual slice thickness for all select-
able slice thicknesses.
Homogeneity 0
Contrast scale 0
The contrast scale (CS) indicates the change in attenuation coefficient of a water-equiv-
alent material required to change the average CT number of this material by 1.
An air measurement is performed to determine the contrast scale.
The spatial resolution during high contrast is determined by evaluating the MTF.
A wire phantom and special evaluation software are used to calculate the MTF.
The resolution is displayed in line pairs per centimeter (LP/cm) for 50% MTF, 10% MTF,
and 2% MTF.
Tabletop positions 0
A 70 kg weight is positioned on the tabletop (at the foot-end). After attaching a label to the
moving and stationary parts of the patient table, the tabletop is automatically fed in and
fed out at a defined distance.
Follow the program instructions.
Low-contrast resolution 0
An image of the low-contrast phantom is generated while positioned in the center of the
measurement field.
The spatial resolution is visually evaluated for low contrast. The 5 mm holes have to be
visible in the image of the phantom.
Center an ionization chamber axially in the system axis so that the slice plane runs
through the center of the chamber.
The ionization chamber has to be connected to a special dosimeter.
The length dose product (LDP/mGy x cm) displayed by the dosimeter is manually
entered in the input field (ZZ = number of detector rows).
The program computes the dose in the system axis according to the following
formula:
LDP ( mGy cm )
Dose(mGy ) --------------------------
Sl i ce thickness (cm) x
Topogram dose 0
LDP ( mGy cm )
Dose(mGy ) ----------------------
chamber length (cm
A CCR-phantom should be used as the film holder. Position the upper edge of the
phantom in the center of the gantry (tolerance 5 mm).
Position the film in the system axis and perpendicular to the main beam.
Move the film in the Z-direction prior to each scan with a different slice thickness.
After the film is developed, average the entire width of each exposed strip and manu-
ally enter it in the input field.
The position of the slice plane changes by the same amount. The deviation between
mechanical and electronic display of tilt angles from +15 to -15 is measured; the devi-
ation is entered manually in the input field.
Measure the tilt angle mechanically using a spirit level on the gantry cover.
The tilt angle displayed by the system may not deviate from the measured angle by
more than 2 degrees.
