High voltage

NOTE Dangerous voltages may be present.

Switch off the main power supply before working on the system
and secure the system against unintended switch-on.

Allow at least two minutes discharge time after switching off the
system. Prior to starting work on the components indicated
below, measure the voltage level in the PDS (right gantry stand)
between D450 X7 and X9 for Spirit, or between fuse holders
F3.2(+) and F4.2(-) for Emotion 6/16 (2007). The voltage must be
below 40 V DC.

Working in the gantry

Prior to starting work in the gantry:
- Wait until rotation has stopped
- Disable gantry rotation via service switch S5 on MAS D301
- Use the mechanical brake to prevent gantry rotation while working in the gantry.
- Connect the stationary and rotating part of the gantry with a ground cable before
working in the gantry.

NOTE Remove the cable prior to rotating the gantry.

System-specific information 0

NOTE Only phantoms delivered with the CT system may be used for sys-
tem adjustments.

NOTE The density of the water in the phantom depends on the water
temperature. Changing the water temperature by 1 Kelvin corre-
sponds to changing the water equivalent to 0.3 HU (Hounsfield
Unit) in the CT picture.
The water phantom has to be stored at a constant temperature of
22 3 Celsius!
For measurements, the water temperture in the phantom has to
be 22 3 Celsius!

NOTE Changing the vertical table position always changes the horizon-
tal table position.

NOTE NO other functions are allowed during the adjustment proce-

dures.

NOTE The gap of the plexi-strip has to be at the 11 oclock position.

Adaptation of the generator oscillator frequency 3.4

General 0

The components of the

HV tank (H1)
D400
Generator electronics box
comprise a resonance circuit. As a result, it is necessary to determine the system-specific
resonance frequency of these components. For this reason, the generator electronics
(GEL) adjust to the optimal oscillator frequency during this procedure. The result is stored
in the XRS controller.
When replacing one of the above components, you have to repeat the adjustment proce-
dure.

Procedure 0

Remove all absorbers from the measurement field.

Change to the service mode Options > Service > Local Service.
Select Tune-up.
Select Expert Mode.
Select GenOsc.
Select Go.
Press START.
This adjustment uses a special static mode and requires approximately 80 sec.
Wait until the message "Generator Oscillatory Frequency completed" appears.

Tube gettering 3.5

General 0

Gettering is required after the X-ray tube is replaced or in response to frequent tube arc-
ing.
The getter procedure is used to:
Check the HV behavior of the X-ray tube
Improve the HV stability of the X-ray tube, if insufficient
Guarantee the HV stability of a new X-ray tube
This procedure is also known as conditioning the X-ray tube. After you start the proce-
dure with the voltage selected, the program automatically performs a specific number of
scans. If the tube arcs, the auto repeat function attempts to repeat the scans to obtain a
specific number of scans without arcing. If the tube does not arc during these scans, the
voltage is automatically switched to the next higher kV step. Gettering is completed when
the highest kV step has been performed without tube arcing.

Procedure 0

Select Tune-up.
Select Expert Mode.
Select Getter.
Select Start voltage (kV): 80 kV.
Switch on "Auto repeat after tube arcing".
Select Go.
Press START.
When all the steps of the gettering procedure have been completed without errors,
the message "Gettering completed" appears.

Z-ADJUSTMENT of the tube collimator 3.6

General 0

The function of the Z-adjustment is to find the Z-position of the tube collimator where the
maximum signal intensity is measured by the detector.
First, the tube is heated up automatically ( > 1,000 K ). This is followed by a cool-down
phase to a tube temperature of approx. 950 K. After that the Z-adjustment procedure
starts.
The adjustment starts with a defined movement of the tube-side diaphragm toward the
back of the gantry. Measurements are taken incrementally with each position in the oppo-
site direction. The optimal tube diaphragm positions for the low, middle, and high channels
of the detector are determined in static mode (no rotation). In addition, the optimal posi-
tions for two rotation times are determined. During the adjustment, the diaphragm blades
are moved accordingly.

Procedure 0

Select Tune-up.
Select Expert Mode.
Select ZAdjust.
Select Go.
Press START.
After the Z-adjustment procedure has been finished:
Select Go (to save the results).
(The message "Z-adjustment of tube collimator successfully completed" appears).

Mechanical adjustment 0

NOTE The Z-adjustment procedure also checks whether the collimator

is positioned parallel to the detector system.
If the adjustment of the slotted plate in the collimator box is out of
tolerance, the system has to be adjusted mechanically.
To adjust the collimator box mechanically, the collimator adjust-
ment tool is required (part no. 38 12 604).

If a mechanical adjustment is necessary, the following message appears during the

Z-adjust procedure:
The adjustment of the tube collimator is out of range.
Click Cancel to start the adjustment procedure or Click Go to accept this adjust-
ment.
Select Cancel to start the mechanical adjustment procedure or select Go to accept this
adjustment (for service purposes only; image quality may be poor)

Z-position check of the tube diaphragm 3.7

General 0

To ensure a maximum output signal for the detector elements, the X-ray beam has to be
centered precisely over the detector. The ZCheck procedure provides you with a quick
check of the X-ray beam alignment.
The reference value of the tube diaphragm determined via ZAdjust is the starting point of
the quick check. The diaphragm is then shifted symmetrically in both Z-directions. The
measured detector element output has to follow symmetrical thresholds, as long as the
Z-adjustment is still within tolerance. This procedure is automatically added to the cus-
tomer "check-up" procedure at specific intervals.
If the result of the ZCheck is out of specification, please perform the ZAdjust procedure.

NOTE There is no need to perform the ZCheck procedure if you have just

Focus alignment 3.8

General 0

The FocusAli procedure adjusts the electromagnetic focus deflection (flying focal spot)
with respect to the parameters of different:
Rotation times
Integration times of the DMS
Focus size
To determine the electromagnetic behavior of the focus deflection circuit, the following
adjustments are necessary:
Phase: This step determines the synchronization (delay) between the DMS and focus
deflection.
Amplitude: Based on the neutral position, the amplitude of the focus deflection is
determined in mm. With the phase specified, the amplitude is set so that the deflection
equals half the width of one detector element.
Offset: With the phase and amplitude specified, the offset of the focus deflection is set
so that the central beam is exactly in the center of the detector.
The procedure adjusts the settings for phase, amplitude, and offset for all combinations of
these parameters.

NOTE To avoid that incorrect adjustment values are created during tune
up, only phantoms delivered with the CT system may be used for
system adjustments.
Also the water phantom has to have the same temperature as that
in the examination room.

Procedure 0

Position the alignment phantom in the measurement field.

Generator adaptation 3.10

(The Plexiglas strip has to be installed.)

General 0

The objective of the generator adaptation procedure is to set the generator parameters
(filament current, tube current, and dose) so that a specific noise value is guaranteed
across the complete power (kW) range. For this reason, the noise value (sigma) is mea-
sured in a 20 cm water phantom with different power (kW) steps.
The generator adaptation has to be performed for:
2 predefined kV-steps and
1 focal spot size
The procedure adapts the settings for all combinations of these parameters.

NOTE To avoid that incorrect adjustment values are created during tune

Filament adaptation 3.11

General 0

The objective of the FilAdapt procedure is to adapt the filament current to changes in the
filament due to evaporation. The filament current is adjusted to reach the X-ray dose val-
ues determined via the GenAdapt procedure. The generator adaptation procedure opti-
mizes the filament current, i.e. you do not have to perform the filament adaptation
procedure after you have run a generator adaptation.
This procedure is automatically added to the customer "check-up" procedure at specific
intervals.

NOTE There is no need to perform the filament adaptation procedure if

Defective channel correction 3.13

(The Plexiglas strip has to be installed.)

General 0

NOTE After performing a Defective channel correction procedure, the

tune-up steps Channel Correction, Air Calibration, and Spac-
ing have to be performed.

Basically, defective channels are handled in two different ways:

Automatic defective channel detection:

Standard procedure recommended for service purposes.

NOTE The program automatic defective channel detection deletes the

old automatic defective channel list and subsequently creates a
new automatic defective channel list.

Channels requiring manual switch-off cannot be deleted via the

automatic procedure.

The program automatic defective channel detection is also per-

formed during the checkup procedure. However, the detected
defective channels are valid only temporarily until the next
checkup procedure is performed. No additional tune up steps
are required after the checkup procedure.

Manual defective channel detection:

To switch off defective channels manually, special detector knowledge about multislice
techniques is required.
Manual defective channel correction is performed only if the defective channel cannot be
detected automatically (e.g. values are too rough or problem is sporadic).

NOTE Channels switched off manually can be reactivated only by using

the same manual procedure.

Channel correction 3.14

(The Plexiglas strip has to be installed.)

General 0

The ChannelCorrection procedure compensates for the difference in attenuated signals

from detector element to detector element. The correction has to be made for different
scan parameters (e.g. kV, slice width, etc.) as well as the density of the absorbers and the
path covered within an absorber. For this reason, head and body absorbers are used
when determining the correction tables. The correction tables comprise linear and square
root parts.

Air calibration 3.15

(The Plexiglas strip has to be installed.)

General 0

The channels of the measurement system have different levels of sensitivity that are com-
pensated for by Air Calibration. Air calibration consists of two major steps, base calibra-
tion and difference calibration.
The objective of base calibration is to determine the changes in sensitivity caused by
present environmental conditions. For this reason, base calibration has to be performed
on a daily basis. This function is selected automatically when the system is switched on.
In addition, the customer can run base calibration under Setup > Calibration, as
required.
The objective of the difference calibration procedure is to determine the structural differ-
ences in sensitivity for the various scan modes (kV, mA, slice width, rotation time, etc.).
For this reason, difference calibration tables are generated during tune-up only.
Air calibration checks whether an absorber is in the X-ray beam. If the message indicates
There may be an object in the scan field... although no absorber is in the X-ray beam, the
reason could be contrast on the plexi strip, a defective channel, or the adjustment of the
collimator box (ZAdjust).
With softwware version VB15, wait times between the KV steps are no longer required.

Spacing correction 3.16

(The Plexiglas strip has to be installed.)

General 0

This procedure is used to correct the equidistance (mechanical) behavior of the single
detector elements. These so-called "spacing errors" can result in visible artifacts in tomo-
grams.
The Spacing correction mathematically equalizes the different distances of the single
detector elements. For this reason, a spacing correction table is created to compensate
for spacing errors during image reconstruction.

NOTE To avoid that incorrect adjustment values are created during tune
up, only phantoms delivered with the CT system may be used for

each measurement value is multiplied by a scaling factor during pre-processing. These
scaling factors are determined via the WaterScaling procedure function. The scaling fac-
tors have to be generated for each scan parameter (kV, slice width, etc.).

Tube gettering 6.4

Z-ADJUSTMENT of the tube collimator 6.5

In addition, the optimum posi-
tions of all collimator slots are determined in rotation mode. During the adjustment, the
diaphragm blades are moved accordingly.

Z-position check of the tube diaphragm 6.6

If the result of the ZCheck is out of specification, please perform the ZAdjust procedure.

Focus alignment 6.7

General 0

The FocusAli procedure adjusts the electromagnetic focus deflection (flying focal spot)
with respect to the parameters of different:
Rotation times
Integration times of the DMS
Focus sizes (small/large)

NOTE Only the original phantoms (delivered with the system) can be

The vertical and horizontal positioning of the phantom is per-
formed automatically at a predefined table height. For this reason,

Defective channel correction 6.12

General 0

NOTE To avoid image artifacts:

After performing a defective channel correction procedure and
a new defective channel is detected, or a defective channel is
reactivated, the tune-up steps Channel Correction, Air Calibra-
tion, and Spacing have to be performed.

Editing the defective channel table manually:

To switch off defective channels manually, special detector knowledge about multislice
techniques is required.
Manual defective channel correction is performed only if the defective channel cannot be
detected automatically (e.g. values are too rough or problem is sporadic).

NOTE Channels switched off manually can be reactivated only by using

the same manual procedure.

Example: Screenshot regarding defective channels

Channel Correction 6.13

(The plexi-strip has to be installed).

Air calibration 6.14

(The plexi-strip has to be installed).

In addition, the customer can run base calibration under Setup/Calibration, as required.
If the message There
may be an object in the scan field... is displayed and no absorber is in the X-ray beam, the
reasons could be contrast on the plexi-strip, a defective channel, or the adjustment of the
collimator box (ZAdjust).

Spacing correction 6.15

(The plexi-strip has to be installed).

Water Scaling 6.16

(The plexi-strip has to be installed).

General 0

The density of water is defined as 0 HU on the Hounsfield scale. To ensure this condition,
each measurement value is multiplied by a scaling factor during pre-processing. These
scaling factors are determined via the WaterScaling procedure function. The scaling fac-
tors have to be generated for each scan parameter (kV, slice width, etc.).

NOTE The density of water is a function of its temperature. A difference

of +10 Kelvin (18 degrees Fahrenheit) results in a difference of -3
HU on the CT scale. For reproducible scaling factors, the water
temperature inside the phantom has to be the same for all <Water-
Scaling > procedures (QUALITY/CONSTANCY). For this reason, it
is recommended that the water phantom be stored in the scan
room to ensure a constant water temperature level.
Approx. 5 hours are required for the water in the phantom to com-
pensate for a 10 Kelvin difference in temperature (18 degrees
Fahrenheit).

NOTE Only the original phantoms (delivered with the system) can be
used.
The vertical and horizontal positioning of the phantom is per-
formed automatically at a predefined table height. For this reason,

Mechanical adjustment of the collimator box
7Emotion (2007): Mechanical collimator adjustments

Safety 0

NOTE Read and observe the safety information contained in the "Safety
information" section of this document. (Safety Information / p. 8)

Important information 0

NOTE When adjusting the collimator box mechanically, at least one alu-
minum foil spacer (part no. 38 15 136) is required.

A mechanical adjustment of the collimator box is necessary only

if the measured ZAdjust value exceeds the tolerance for Emotion
6: 30 m, or Emotion 16: 20 m.

The thickness of one aluminum foil spacer is 25 m.

Due to the mechanical position of the aluminum foil spacer, one

spacer results in a total correction of 40 m (factor 1.6).

Procedure 0

Explanation of the collimator adjustment:

NOTE Definition left and right of the collimator box:

The collimator has to be in a 6 oclock position and the view direc-
tion has to be from the table to the gantry.

The following procedure shows the adjustment on the left collimator side. The adjustment
on the right collimator side (spindle/motor side) has to be performed accordingly.

Constancy test functions 8.1

Testing the position of the light markers 0

Position the slice thickness phantom in the measurement field so that light beams of the
interior light markers are centered above the upper cross markins on the phantom.
Perform the measurement and evaluate the Z-position of the measurement phantom in
the slice plane.
The phantom has to be positioned precisely in the Z-direction of the slice plane. The
Z-position is correct when the long and short bars overlap in the tomogram.

Slice thickness 0

Slice thickness is tested using the slice thickness phantom. The phantom contains two
aluminum strips 100 x 25 x 0.2 mm.
The following are prerequisites for accurately determining the slice thickness:
The phantom has to be centered in the measurement field and may not be tilted for-
ward.
The phantom has to be positioned precisely in the Z-direction of the slice plane.
Both aluminum strips have to be positioned horizontally in the tomogram.
The program uses the tomogram to compute the actual slice thickness for all select-
able slice thicknesses.

Water value and image pixel noise (NOISE) 0

The water phantom is positioned in the center of the measurement field.

In each tomogram, the CT numbers are measured in a test area.
The pixel noise is calculated from two tomograms of the water phantom taken in
sequence using the standard deviation of the CT numbers of a defined test area in the
difference image.
In addition, this test determines the high voltage at the X-ray tube.

Homogeneity 0

The water phantom is positioned in the center of the measurement field.

In each tomogram, the CT numbers are measured in a total of five test areas. (Each test
area covers between 2% and 5% of the slice area of the phantom.)
The absolute value of the difference between the average CT number of the center test
area and the CT numbers of the four peripheral test areas is the homogeneity.

Contrast scale 0

The contrast scale (CS) indicates the change in attenuation coefficient of a water-equiv-
alent material required to change the average CT number of this material by 1.
An air measurement is performed to determine the contrast scale.

High contrast resolution 0

The spatial resolution during high contrast is determined by evaluating the MTF.
A wire phantom and special evaluation software are used to calculate the MTF.
The resolution is displayed in line pairs per centimeter (LP/cm) for 50% MTF, 10% MTF,
and 2% MTF.

Tabletop positions 0

A 70 kg weight is positioned on the tabletop (at the foot-end). After attaching a label to the
moving and stationary parts of the patient table, the tabletop is automatically fed in and
fed out at a defined distance.
Follow the program instructions.

Acceptance test functions 8.2

Low-contrast resolution 0

An image of the low-contrast phantom is generated while positioned in the center of the
measurement field.
The spatial resolution is visually evaluated for low contrast. The 5 mm holes have to be
visible in the image of the phantom.

Dose in the system axis 0

Center an ionization chamber axially in the system axis so that the slice plane runs
through the center of the chamber.
The ionization chamber has to be connected to a special dosimeter.
The length dose product (LDP/mGy x cm) displayed by the dosimeter is manually
entered in the input field (ZZ = number of detector rows).
The program computes the dose in the system axis according to the following
formula:

LDP ( mGy cm )
Dose(mGy ) --------------------------
Sl i ce thickness (cm) x

Fig. 33: Dose in the system axis

Topogram dose 0

An ionization chamber is attached to the tabletop.

The chamber is centered axially in the measurement field to ensure that the chamber is
fully irradiated during the topogram.
The ionization chamber is connected to a special dosimeter.
The length dose product (LDP/mGy x cm) displayed by the dosimeter is manually
entered in the input field.
The program computes the dose in the system axis according to the following
formula:

LDP ( mGy cm )
Dose(mGy ) ----------------------
chamber length (cm

Fig. 34:Topogram dose

Dose rate profile 0

The dose rate profile is measured in air with an X-ray film.

Quality 103

A CCR-phantom should be used as the film holder. Position the upper edge of the
phantom in the center of the gantry (tolerance 5 mm).
Position the film in the system axis and perpendicular to the main beam.
Move the film in the Z-direction prior to each scan with a different slice thickness.
After the film is developed, average the entire width of each exposed strip and manu-
ally enter it in the input field.

Tilt angle of the slice plane 0

The position of the slice plane changes by the same amount. The deviation between
mechanical and electronic display of tilt angles from +15 to -15 is measured; the devi-
ation is entered manually in the input field.
Measure the tilt angle mechanically using a spirit level on the gantry cover.
The tilt angle displayed by the system may not deviate from the measured angle by
more than 2 degrees.
