3 Field of application

3.1 Permitted uses

Lumitherm II is a system designed to regulate the size of a ventilation gap in the side
wall of a barn through the inflation of translucent poly bags.

The Lumitherm II system consists of a frame holding a poly bag curtain mounted on
the side wall of a barn. Fans are connected to the poly bag.

The fans are controlled by a thermostat or a climate control computer. The fans can
also be operated manually using the pushbuttons on the controller. Control can be
either fully automatic (climate computer or thermostat) or manual (climate computer
or ON-OFF switch).

The poly bag is divided into a number of pipes which, when not inflated, lie folded up
in the frame. When the poly bag is inflated, these pipes unfold to form a completely
closed insulating wall, which lets through the light. The system is inflated by one or
more fans. When the fan is switched off, the poly bag collapses and automatically
folds up thereby opening the ventilation gap again. To allow the poly bag to collapse
more quickly, a PVC tube is fitted in the second pipe from the top.

The Lumitherm II system can be made up of several sections depending on the

height of the ventilation gap required.

3.2 Modifying the equipment

Do not make unauthorised modifications to the system. Unauthorised modifications
may make the system unsafe.
Modifications must be authorised by the manufacturer in writing prior to any changes.

5.12 Installation of climate computer

The climate control computer (where supplied) must be connected by an

authorised installer in accordance with the locally applicable regulations.
Position the climate computer and cables out of the reach of animals.
Preferably position the control box in an office or machine room or shield as
appropriate.
Wherever possible, install the control box in a position where the curtain is
visible. You should be able to see the curtain when operating the control box.
Once all cables are connected, the cable glands should all be sealed (kit) to
ensure that they are watertight.
Make sure that the available voltage and frequency corresponds to the
data on the rating plate of the control system / fans. See also section 3.3.
Operating limits and technical specifications.
Wiring diagrams for the climate computer are in the enclosed manual Climate
computer for Lumitherm II (if the system has been supplied with a climate
computer).

Electrocution hazard. Live components inside control box.

5.13 Installation of thermostats

If you have chosen to use thermostats instead of a climate computer, you should be
aware of the following precautions:

Electrical components must only be connected up by an authorised installer.

Caution It must be possible to switch off the fans. For this reason a main
ON-OFF switch must be fitted between the power supply and the
thermostats. Before you start any maintenance on the fans, you must switch
off and lock out the main ON-OFF switch.
The thermostats must be positioned indoors, at least2.5 m from the wall of the
Lumitherm.
Make sure that the thermostats are out of the reach of livestock!
Make sure that the available voltage and frequency corresponds to the
data on the rating plate of the thermostat / fans. See also section 3.3.

6 Operating instructions

6.1 Safety precautions for operation

The control box is designed solely for controlling (open / close) a Lumitherm II
system. It must not be used for purposes other than those described in this manual.

Caution When restarting the equipment after a power failure or when starting
the machine for the first time, keep all other persons away for the operating
area of the equipment and away from the fans.
Before you put the machine into service, read the manuals, in particular the
manual Climate computer for Lumitherm II (where supplied).

Warning The equipment must not be put into service if it is not fitted with a
main ON-OFF switch between the power supply and the thermostats. The
equipment must not be put into service if any guards are missing or faulty.

6.2 Operation with the climate control computer

Full instructions on operating the Lumitherm II climate computer are given in the
manual Climate computer for Lumitherm II.

6.3 Operation with thermostats

6.3.1 Safety precautions for thermostats
The thermostats (Multifan T15-WD) (Figure 6.1) used here can be pre-set to a
specific set point value for the barn. The thermostat is dual control, i.e. 6; switching
takes place above and below the set point value.

Important

Make sure that the fans are connected to the correct thermostat contacts (see
also wiring diagram, Appendix B).
The thermostats must only be connected up by an authorised installer.

6.3.2 Thermostat switching sequence

To make inflation of the Lumitherm II wall as simple as possible, it is important to
ensure the proper switching sequence.

Caution Make sure that the top segments are inflated before the lower ones.

6
Dual control: Also known as two-way switching.

37 Lumitherm II Ventilation System/07-2011

To ensure the proper switching sequence for the thermostats, the value (i.e. the
setpoint) for the top thermostats should be higher than the value for the bottom ones.
This means that when the temperature drops, the topmost segment will be heated
before the lower ones. See Appendix B for a wiring diagram which includes the
switching sequence.
