1. Let G be an abelian group of order n. Let p be a prime number that divides n, (i.e.
p|n). Show that Gp = {g G : o(g) = pn for some n N} is a subgroup of G.
2. Let G be a group and let g G\Z(G).
(a) Show that Z(G) ( G.
(b) Show that [G : Z(G)] cannot be a prime number.
3. Let R be a commutative ring with identity. Show that M is a maximal ideal if and
only if R/M is a field.
4. How many non-isomorphic abelian groups are there of order 360? Justify your
answer.
5. How many non-isomorphic groups are there of order 99? Justify your answer.
