LESSON PLAN Pathfinder

Subject: Space/ Programming


Key Stage/s: 2
Procedure: Learning Objective: To use basic code to
write and follow instructions.

Task: To create a route and log steps


taken from start to finish points.

Aims:
1. Introduce basics of
programming
2. Develop problem solving skills
3. Develop team work
4. Introduce pair programming

Introduction
10mins
Whole class Explain to the children that they will be learning
about the basics of computer programming by
creating an obstacle course using the worksheet
provided. The children will then have to log the
various routes taken.
Vocabulary check: Check pupils understanding of
subject specific vocabulary (see examples below)
Do they understand what these words mean?

Show example of worksheet on interactive


whiteboard and model how to complete.
Generate / publish success criteria.

Activity
30 minutes in
pairs For further challenge introduce a 30 minute timer.

In pairs of mixed ability, children follow


instructions on worksheet to make a map with
obstacles. Pupils are then to swap with another
mixed ability pair for them to make a written log
of various paths from start to finish.
20 minutes.
Whole class.
Differentiation

The children will be in mixed ability pairs so the


more able can assist and guide the less able in
the activity.

HA: To find a path in the least possible steps


MA: To find more than one path between the start
and finish points.
LA: To record any paths found pictorially.

Plenary

Split the class into 2 teams or teams of 5 with


each team nominating a captain to play capture
the flag rover game.
Instructions:
captain takes answers from teammates then
inputs answer into game. First to capture the flag
wins. (see teacher resources for full instructions

resources.html)

taught the knowledge, skill and understanding to
develop relationships through work and play by
participating in group activities with those that
have differing needs.
Science: Planets and the solar system: describe
the movement of the earth and other planets
relative to the sun in the solar system.
English: Speaking and listening: maintain
attention and participate actively in collaborative
conversations, staying on topic and initiating and
responding to comments
