Science Observation: February 27, 2017

The day before this lesson they had Charlotte Mecklenburg Storm Water
come in to give a demonstration about pollution into our waters and the
reason it cost so much money to remove these pollutants to drink the water.
The teacher introduced the days lesson by stating there are two types of
ecosystems. The students have been learning about ecosystems for the past
few days. The students then continued to watch a video (From Discovery
Student) about 7 different biomes that are in each ecosystem. Once 6 of
them finished, she said those are part of the terrestrial ecosystem.
She asked what are the characteristics of a terrestrial ecosystem and created
an anchor chart in their notes:
During this time, the teacher asked questions like:
What are examples of plant life?
What are some things that vary between the biomes?
Terrestrial Aquatic
On land Freshwater Lakes, rivers, ponds,
stream

Variety of plant life: Saltwater Marine ocean

Cactus
Trees
Flowers
Grass
Bushes
Land animals: Freshwater + Saltwater = estuary
Byson
Rabbit
Bird
Deer
Polar bear
Moose
Cow
Lion
Temperature varies Sea life:
Seahorse
Sharks
Fishes
Crustaceans
Jellyfish
Frogs
Turtles
Coral reef

Amount of rain fall varies Plant Life:

Sea weed

The students finished watching the last biome of the video and filled out the
other side of their t-chart.
Teacher asked questions like:
They mentioned a crustacean in the video, what is that?
What makes something a mammal?
Are their going to be trees?
The students went on their Chromebooks to explore ecosystems through
Discovery Education. They were expected to explore each of the seven
biomes and to pick one terrestrial and one aquatic ecosystem. They had to
find which plants and animals that lived there and to find any interesting
facts.
After they finished their exploration, they had to answer questions about the
two ecosystems:
1. Look at both, and determine their similarities.
2. Look a both, and determine the differences.
3. Pick one animal in an ecosystem, could it survive in another
ecosystem?
4. If you lived in an ecosystem, is it hot or cold? Is it wet or dry? What
kind of animals live there? What kind of plants live there?
