1. Overview of Printer Driver Packager
NX
Printer Driver Packager NX creates packages for installing the customized printer driver. By distributing
the package containing the customized printer driver, you can integrate the printer driver settings and
restrictions for different users.

1.1 What You Can Do with Printer Driver

Packager NX
The following operations can be performed in Printer Driver Packager NX:

1.1.1 Managing Devices and Driver Information to Create Installer Packages

You can register the device and driver information in Printer Driver Packager NX and easily create
installer packages with unified settings.

In the installer package, you can include information such as the customized printer driver settings,
printer names, and print port settings. You can also combine more than one package into a single
package to enable installing of multiple printer drivers at one time and specify the executing user of the
installer to enable users to install the driver without logging off and on again as a different user.

1.1.2 Customizing the Printer Driver Settings

You can use Printer Driver Packager NX to customize the following printer driver settings:

Changing the default values of the printer function

You can change the setting values of each printer function from the factory defaults, enabling users
to run the devices with the customized setting values.

If necessary, the users can modify the setting values.

The default values you can change vary depending on the type of the device or printer driver you
are using.

Locking the setting value of the printer function

You can specify and lock setting values as the default values and prevent other users from changing
them on the printer driver.

You can lock functions and setting values to suit your environment needs and device uses.

In the printer driver, the only setting values displayed are the default values.

The printer functions you can lock or unlock vary depending on the type of the device you are
using.

5
1. Overview of Printer Driver Packager NX

Hiding the setting value of the printer function

You can specify the setting values of the printer function to hide or display.

The setting values that are set to "Do not Display" are not displayed in the printer driver. Only the
setting values that are set to "Display" are shown.

By hiding setting values to suit your environment needs and device uses, you can restrict the use of
settings in the printer driver that can be selected by users.

The setting values you can hide or display vary depending on the type of the device you are using.

Displaying the pop-up dialog

You can specify the optional function to display a pop-up dialog box when printing. This dialog
box is used to enter or confirm the authentication information. You can also select the default
character strings to be displayed in the pop-up dialog box.

Note that some printer drivers may not support the pop-up display function.

For details on the types of printer driver that support customization, see page 9 "1.3 Drivers
Supported by Printer Driver Packager NX".

registered, the device information will be overwritten. The device of the same name but with different
"DEVICEID" is added separately as a new device.

1. Click [Import Device Information] in Device View.

2. Click [Browse...].

3. Select the CSV file to import, and then click [Import].

If the first row in the CSV file does not contain the field names, clear the [The first line contains item
names] check box.

If you do not want to overwrite device information with the same device ID, deselect the [Overwrite
the device information with the same ID with the registered device information] check box.

4. Click [Import].

If the CSV file you want to import was not created by Printer Driver Packager NX, proceed to Step

3.5 Adding Print Configuration

Printer Driver Packager NX manages the customized information of printer drivers using print
configuration.

You can specify the customized value for the default settings of the printer function, lock values of setting
items, and select to show or hide certain setting items. You can also set a pop-up dialog for entering/
confirming the authentication and user information when printing.

With One Click Presets, you can customize the driver's One Click Preset icon.

1. Click [Add Print Configuration] in Print Configuration Manager.

2. Select [Display All Available Models] or [Display Only Models on the Device List in Device
View].

Display All Available Models

Displays all device models of the registered driver.

Display Only Models on the Device List in Device View

Displays only the models of the devices that are registered in the device view.

3. Select the model and the driver, and then click [OK].

4. Select [Newly Create] or [Import External File] under [Add Print Configuration], and click
[OK]. For details on drivers that support addition of print configurations, see page 9 "1.3
Drivers Supported by Printer Driver Packager NX".

5. Customize the print settings of the printer driver.

There are three methods of customization depending on the selection in [Add Print
Configuration] of step 4.

<5-A> [Newly Create]

A1) Print configuration editing screen is displayed.

Changing the default values

Click the "Default Setting" column of the setting item, and select the value you want to set as
its default from the drop down list.

You can change the default value in the screen that appears by clicking the [Details...] button.

Locking the settings values

Click the "Lock/Unlock" column of the setting item, and select [Lock] from the drop down list.

You can lock the default value in the screen that appears by clicking the [Details...] button.

Hiding the setting value

1. Select the setting item name, and click the [Details...] button.

2. Click the "Display/Do not Display" column of the setting item, and select [Do not
Display] from the drop down list.

28
Adding Print Configuration

3. Click [OK].

A popup dialog appears.

1. Click [Option Configuration] tab, and select the check box of the dialog you want to
show.

2. If the dialog that you want to display has the [Option Configuration] setting, select the
default value of the text string you want to display in the dialog box from the pop-up
menu.

A2) Click (Save) and (Exit) to exit the editing screen.

A3) Enter print configuration registration name, and then click [OK].

For the types of the printer driver, see page 9 "1.3 Drivers Supported by Printer Driver Packager

The functions on the [Option Configuration] tab are not available in the PS and RPCS raster
drivers.

The setting items of the printer function, the name displayed on the screen, and the setting values
you can select vary depending on the type of device or printer driver you are using. For details
about each printer function, see the manual provided with the device you are using or the printer
driver Help.

If the driver used as the basis for the print configuration is deleted from Printer Driver Packager NX,
the print configuration is grayed out and cannot be edited.

For some printer drivers, the notations of selections and functions that are displayed in the print
configuration editing screen and the ones that are displayed in the UI after installing the printer
driver can differ.

For the PostScript printer driver on a device equipped with the optional duplex printing function,
the default value for duplex units or duplex printing from the printer driver must be manually set
after the driver is installed.

If a EMF spool is enabled from the printer driver's print settings with a driver that has been enabled
for the function to display the pop up dialog while printing, the dialog will not be displayed before
printing. If displaying a dialog before printing, do not enable the EMF Spool in the printer settings
of the printer driver.

To apply the print settings file in the Universal Driver, the following must be done after installing the
driver.

1. Open "Devices and Printers" "Printer Properties" "Printer Selection."

2. In "Select a Printer," select the same model as the one used to create a print configuration.

3. Press the "Update Now" button.

4. Press the "OK"/"Apply" button.

(PS Universal Driver V3.13 or earlier. Be sure to run with administrative privileges.)

3. Creating Installer Packages

If the PS Driver for Universal Print is installed the default value for duplex units or duplex printing
must also be manually changed from the printer driver after the driver is installed, for the printer
model which supports duplex units or duplex printing.
(PS Universal Driver V3.13 or earlier. Be sure to run with administrative privileges.)

With some PS drivers, dual sided print and print resolution settings are not available. For more
information, please refer to the Printer Driver Packager NX download page.

3.7 Deleting Installer Packages

There are two methods of deleting a package. One is to delete packages that match certain criteria at
once, and the other is to delete all packages that are stored locally in a batch.

3.7.1 Specifying the Criteria and Deleting the Matching Packages

You can delete packages that match the specified criteria from the devices in the selected group or from
the packages that are linked to the selected devices.

1. Select a device in Device View, and then click [Delete installer packages].

2. Specify the package you want to delete.

Port Selection

Specify the protocol of the printer port to narrow down the selection.

Package Versioning

Specify the version of the package to narrow down the selection. If you select [Or Greater],
all packages with the specified version or higher are selected. If you select [Or Less], you can
select all packages with the specified version or lower.

Driver Selection

Specify the driver name to narrow down conditions.

Installer Package Selection

Select the packages to be deleted in the list of packages that match the specified criteria.

3. Click [Delete].

3.7.2 Deleting All Packages

You can delete all the packages linked to the selected device.

1. Select a device in Device View, and then click [Delete All Installer Packages].
2. Confirm the package to be deleted, and then click [Delete].

44
4. Executing Installer Packages

4.1 Executing a Package for Adding a Printer

When the EXE file is executed, the following are added to the environment in which the package is
executed.

"Printer"

A printer icon is created in the [Devices and Printers] list with the printer name set in the installer
package. If a printer icon with the same name already exists on the installation PC, an icon is
created in accordance with the conditions set in the installer package.

* Please note if the icon name is changed manually, the package cannot be deleted correctly when
it is uninstalled from the "Programs and Features" list.

"Programs and Features"

The [Printer Name [Driver Name]] is registered in "Programs and Features" of the Control Panel.

* When the package is uninstalled from "Programs and Features", the corresponding printer, port
and driver are deleted. However, the port and driver are not deleted if they are being used by a
different printer.

However, driver update packages are handled as described below.

"Printer"

Is not added.

The existing printer icon is saved, but the setting contents of the printer icon may be cleared and
returned to the initial values depending on the type of printer driver. See the README or driver
information for the latest information.

"Programs and Features"

The name "UpdateDriver [Driver Name]" is registered in "Programs and Features".

The default settings specified in the print configuration are lost if the printer name is changed after
installation. Reinstall the package if you change the printer name.

If the same driver is already installed in the environment in which the package is being installed,
the installation process is skipped if the version of the driver included in the package is older than
that of the installed driver.

If a printer with the same name as the printer name in the installation package already exists in the
environment in which the package is being installed, either the existing printer name is overwritten
or the name of the printer to be installed is renamed and added. (See [Operations to Perform
When a Printer with the Same Name Exists] setting in "3. Creating Installer Packages" on page
34.)

45
4. Executing Installer Packages

If a print port with the same name as the print port in the installation package already exists in the
environment in which the package is being installed, the existing print port is used unchanged in
the installation.

An error/warning message is displayed in the following cases even if an installer package set to
silent mode is executed.

- When the UAC settings are enabled and the installer package is executed in an account other
than a built-in administrator that belongs to the Administrators group

- When an OS error occurs during installation

In cases where a package set with [Add a unique suffix to printer name] is installed when a printer
with the same name already exists in the environment and the package is then uninstalled from
"Programs and Features" in the Control Panel, the operations are as follows.

- When the same package is installed multiple times:

Only one (package) program is displayed in "Programs and Features". When uninstalled,
only the most recently installed printer is deleted, and the (package) program disappears from
"Programs and Features".

- When separate packages (with the same printer name) are installed:

The number of (package) programs installed are displayed in "Programs and Features".
When uninstalled, the printer that corresponds to the selected (package) program is deleted.

In the case of Point & Print shared printers, the printer icon is only created for the executing user.

When installing a shared printer package, ensure that the URL can be connected to when installing
the package. For example, a package installation error occurs if the login name and password
need to be entered to connect.

The printer icon will always be overwritten in the case of shared printers and USB printers.

Follow the steps below to install a USB printer.

1. Install the package before connecting the USB cable.

2. Connect the USB cable after completing the installation.

3. When the USB cable is connected, the Plug & Play function in Windows OS automatically
recognizes the printer, and a printer icon of the installed driver is created.

When updating a printer driver already installed for a USB port, installing by the [Install Driver
Only] package is recommended. After installing, plug in the USB cable again.

If updating the printer driver by USB printer installer package, delete the USB icon once before
plugging in the USB cable again.

46
Executing a Package for Deleting a Printer

4.2 Executing a Package for Deleting a Printer

The printer driver specified and the following related items are deleted when a package for deleting a
printer is executed.

Printer icon

Port

Uninstall for the installer package registered in [Programs and Features] in the control panel.

However, those currently being used, such as when printing is in progress, will not be deleted.

Nothing is displayed on the screen when a package for deleting a printer is executed correctly.

If a package for deleting a USB printer driver is created/executed

- USB ports are not deleted.

- Printer icons and printer drivers may remain without being deleted.

- Even if the printer driver seems to be deleted by executing the package for deleting a printer,
the printer will remain in the Windows DriverStore, so the printer will be operated when
connecting a USB cable again.

Printer drivers installed using Point & Print are not deleted by the package for deleting drivers.

When a Point & Print shared printer package is uninstalled from "Programs and Features" in the
Control Panel, the [Failed to disconnect network printer.] message may be displayed and
uninstallation may fail. In this case, either use a package for deleting a printer or delete the printer
manually.

If there is a print job remaining in Windows Spooler, overwriting of the printer icon or execution of
the package for deleting a driver fails.

The execution order of installer packages in the batch installer package is not set and cannot be
specified.

47
4. Executing Installer Packages

4.3 Executing a Batch Installer Package

When executing the batch installer package, the packages selected and embedded in page 43 "3.6.3
Creating a Batch Installer Package" are executed in order one at a time.

48
5. "Device Manager NX Pro", "Device
Manager NX Enterprise" Server Linkage
You can link to the installer package distribution function of "Device Manager NX Pro" or "Device
Manager NX Enterprise".

You can upload installation packages created using Printer Driver Packager NX to "Device Manager NX
Pro" Server or "Device Manager NX Enterprise" Server, and register associations to devices in the
Server. This creates a very easy to understand distribution method for installation packages because
users can select the device that they want to use in the Server and then download the corresponding
installation package.

1. Set the address information of the server in the preferences beforehand in order to link with
"Device Manager NX Pro" or "Device Manager NX Enterprise". (See page 51 "6. Editing the
Printer Driver Packager NX Preferences")

2. Create an installer package as normal. (See page 17 "3. Creating Installer Packages")

3. Select the device or group that includes the created installer package, and specify [Upload] from
the menu or button.

4. Select the installer package to upload from the upload window to upload it. (A server login
window is displayed the first time you upload an installer package. It is not displayed on the
second and subsequent times.)

The roles of the "Device Manager NX Pro" or "Device Manager NX Enterprise" that can upload an
installer package are as follows.

- Full Admin

- Device Admin

Alternatively, when creating a new role, assign "DeviceAdvancedWrite" privilege or copy an

existing role that contains "DeviceAdvancedWrite" privilege.

* For details on roles (privileges) and the handling of uploaded installer packages, see the "Device
Manager NX Pro" or "Device Manager NX Enterprise" manual.

Packages that can be uploaded to the server are as shown below.

- TCP/IP port package

- LPR port package

- SmartDeviceMonitor (TCP/IP) port package

- SmartDeviceMonitor (IPP) port package

- USB port package

The following packages cannot be uploaded.

- Package for adding a printer (SMB/UNC path, driver update)

- Package for deleting a driver

49
5. "Device Manager NX Pro", "Device Manager NX Enterprise" Server Linkage

- Batch installer package

When linking to "Device Manager NX", you do not need to create packages for each device if the
driver, model and settings are the same. It is recommended that you create and upload a package
using the steps below.

1. Create one package specifying the address of the representative device.

2. Run an installation test beforehand using the created package.

3. If the test is successful, upload the package.

When the user downloads an installer package from "Device Manager NX", the port information
of the installer package is automatically overwritten with the IP address or host name of the
appropriate device.

The [Use Specified User Account] option (see page 40) can be updated using the "Account for PDP
NX Driver Package Installation" setting in "Device Manager NX Pro" Server or "Device Manager
NX Enterprise" Server when an installer package is created. However, this setting will be applied
to all uploaded packages because this installation account setting is a shared setting throughout
the Server system as opposed to a setting in individual packages. Use the "Printer Driver Packager
NX" settings to switch to package units. Also, please note that when an installer package is
created with the [Use Specified User Account] setting Off and the user account information is
rewritten on the Server, the package may not operate correctly due to the combination of settings.
For details, see the restrictions described in the explanation of "Use Specified User Account" on
page 40.

7. Appendix
The following section explains how to create the individual configuration file to be embedded in an
installer package. It also explains the troubleshooting procedures.

7.1 Supplementary Information

This section provides additional information for when using Printer Driver Packager NX.

7.1.1 Precautions for Setup

Please note the following points when setting up Printer Driver Packager NX on a PC for the first time.

Install

Please run the setup.exe.

It will expand the program to the specified folder.

If installing on Windows Server 2012 or later or Windows 8 or later, an Internet connection is

required for the ".NET Framework" installation.

This installation may take up to ten minutes.

Startup

Please run packager.exe which is directly under the folder that was specified during installation.

For this program, please run with administrator privileges.

Uninstall

Please delete the installation folder.

Please note that when deleting the folder, all created information (drivers, packages, etc.) will also
be deleted.

7.1.2 Precautions when Creating Installer Packages

Please note the following points when creating installer packages using Printer Driver Packager NX.

Device view

When using a LAN Fax Driver, see Readme.txt included with the driver. Please specify the model
name or model type that corresponds to the model in the model name field of the device
information section.

Driver management

Concerning the page description language (PDL) and number of bits (32/64) for the driver, be
sure to check the Readme.txt and enter the correct information. Not having the correct number of
bits can especially cause problems with behavior.

57
7. Appendix

Symantec anti-virus software may detect some of the files in the RPCS raster driver as a virus during
installation. For this case, please update the anti-virus software and virus definitions before
installing the RPCS Raster driver.

Package Creation

If configuring the [Use Specified User Account] when creating the package, the below restrictions
will apply.

- Shared printer (Point & Print) port cannot be selected.

- The user code/user ID/user name separated configuration file (CSV) cannot be set.

- The normally used printer cannot be set.

If any of the above have been set, a warning or error message may be displayed during package
creation.

The following drivers do not support USB connection.

- Universal Driver

- PostScript3 Driver for EFI Controller

Other drivers conform to the specifications of each device.

If an IP address is in the URL or UNC path, do not put a '0' at the beginning of each number.
Putting a '0' at the beginning of the number will result in not being able to print on Vista/2008 and
later operating systems. (filling with '0' is prohibited)

7.1.3 Precautions for Installation Using the Installer Package

To install drivers on a computer using the installer package, pay attention to the following:

Depending on the contents of the installer package that is created or installation environments, drivers
may not work properly.

For the precautions for driver installation, see "Readme" in Printer Driver Packager NX. For details about
how to delete the installed driver, see "Readme" provided with the printer driver.

Package Installation

If installing the package that is set in [Add a unique suffix to printer name] for when the printer with
the same name exists, uninstalling the package from "Add or Remove Programs" ("Programs and
Features" Vista or later) will perform uninstallation as follows;

- If the same package is installed two or more times :

Only one program name is displayed in "Add or Remove Programs".

58
Supplementary Information

If you uninstall the program, the printer which is last installation was deleted. And then the
program name disappears from the "Add or Remove Programs".

- If you installed different package for the printers which are same printer name :

Several program names are displayed in "Add or Remove Programs".

The number of program names is same as the number of the installed packages.

If you uninstall for one printer, the printer corresponding to the uninstall program will be
deleted.

For the setting value of the user code/user ID/user name in the individual settings CSV file, there is
a driver that is retained even if changing the printer name and driver that is retained even after
uninstalling.

For the drivers that are retained even when uninstalling, please note that the value that is set
previous to reinstalling is kept when a value is not set during re-installation.

<Values not carried over due to a printer name change = even if uninstalling, the value is retained>

- PCL6 Driver (2007-2009)

<Values carried over even if the printer name changes>

- RPCS Raster Driver (2011-)

- PCL6 Driver (from second half of 2009-)

- UniversalDriver (2013/7-)

If installing a USB printer, please do the package installation without connecting the USB cable.
After installation, connect the USB cable.

It will be automatically recognized by the Plug & Play feature in the OS, and the installed printer
driver will be created.

When creating and executing the deletion package of the USB printer:

- For Windows 8 or later as well as Windows Server 2012 or later, the printer icon may
remain.

- If connecting the USB cable after running the deletion package, the printer icon will be
created with the driver retained in the Windows driver store.

For a shared printer Point & Print, printer icon is created only to the user who executed the installer.

If installing the shared printer, please perform the package installation so that the URL or UNC
paths are possible to connect to.

For example, if login name and password are required to connect, the package installation will
result in an error.

The hotfix (KB2511290) needs to be applied in advance to upgrade the driver version with a
combination of OS and drivers described as follows:

<affected OS>

- Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)

59
7. Appendix

- Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

- Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

- Windows Server 2008 R2

<affected drivers>

- LAN Fax Driver Ver. 1.x (*1)

- PostScript3 Driver (*1)

*1
However, this limited to the versions that do not support Windows 8 / Windows Server 2012.

The driver upgrade has been known to fail if using versions V3.20.00 and V3.10.00 of the PS
universal driver.

If not Installing with version V4.0.0.0 or later, perform an uninstall before reinstalling.

If the printer driver that was installed by another installer is present, it may fail to install driver
package of the same version.

In this case, a package for upgrading the driver version needs to be prepared or the driver needs
to be removed and reinstalled.

When doing an upgrade installation on an old PC FAX driver, an error may occur.

In this case, delete and reinstall the driver.

For the installation of an old PCL driver package, settings such as user ID/user code and print
settings may fail if a printer of the same name is present. In this case, remove and reinstall the
driver.

60
Creating the Individual Configuration File

7.2 Creating the Individual Configuration File

7.2.1 About the individual configuration file

The individual configuration file is a file in CSV format containing the settings values that may differ for
each device or user such as the user code and user name.

By creating the individual configuration file and embedding the file in the installer package, you can
identify and configure the required user settings of the driver when installing it on different computers.
The sample format file of the CSV file that can be imported is stored in the sample folder under the install
folder of Printer Driver Packager NX.

The following information can be specified in the individual configuration file:

Destination device information assigned to each user includes:
