Government System of
Spain
Background
The most notorious leader of Spain
was Francisco Franco, who ruled the
country in a dictatorship. He abused
his power in making unfair rules and
regulations on the citizens of the
country.
Out of the Spanish population, women
took the biggest hit in Francos rule,
being that they were stripped of their
human rights and restricted heavily
due to Francos religious beliefs.
The countrys rules were according to
Catholic practices, making the
regulations strict and conservative.
Parliamentary
Monarchy
After Francos death, the country
shifted into a democracy. This
democracy consisted of a King and
Queen alongside the government.
Within the government, there are
legislative, judiciary, and executive
branches.
The King and Queen (below) are seen
as the faces of Spain, rather than
holding any real power. An elected
President controls the executive
branch of the government, while the
judiciary branch is run by the courts.
The legislative branch consists of
Congress and the Senate.
Political Parties
Currently Spain is split into two main
political parties that are called PP and
PSOE. Right now, PP is in control of
the country, however the country is in
a political crisis regarding the
presidential elections.
This crisis is due to their democracy
needing a majority vote in order to
elect a new President. Spains voters
are split between PP, PSOE, and two
smaller political parties, making the
winner of the elections have less than
50% of the votes.
In order to fix this issue, two of the
political parties must merge together,
but none of the parties have agreed to
an arrangement as such. It is basically
a waiting game in Spain, to see which
parties will compromise first in order
to win the upcoming elections within
the country.
The President
The leader of the PP political party is
Mariano Rajoy, making him the
current President of Spain. He was
elected in 2011, and has been running
the country for about 6 years now.
He will continue to stay in office until
the elections find an absolute majority
between the political parties running.
Rajoy is not only known as the
President, but also the Prime Minister
of Spain, which gives him the same
power.
A large portion of Spain favors Rajoy,
but he has some traditional views
