GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF TASK(S) AND OBJECTIVES TO BE ACHIEVED


FAO Indonesia in collaboration with the Agency for Food Security of the Ministry of Agriculture is implementing the project
on Promoting Sago Starch Utilization in Indonesia. Sago starch consumption in Indonesia offers considerable opportunity
for contributing to the elimination of food insecurity. The promotion of awareness on sustainable sago palm production,
starch extraction and utilization is key to increasing sago starch utilization. Adding value to sago starch through downstream
processing, and linking the value added products to markets are also critical to sustained growth of sago production.

To address the challenges of sago starch utilization, this project will: raise awareness and promote advocacy for the
sustainable production and utilization of sago starch; strengthen the application of good agricultural practice (GAP) in sago
palm production and promote good manufacturing practice (GMP) in sago starch production. The project will also develop
capacities to promote the development of small food-based sago starch enterprises.

Duties and Responsibilities:


Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representation budget holder and the technical supervision of the Senior Food
Systems Officer (LTO) of ESN/AFI, HQ and in collaboration with the Project Team Leader and the National Project
Coordinator the consultant will carry out the following duties:

First mission (10 days at home station)


1. Develop develop materials to support the conduct of extension activities to the farmers and their groups in order
to promote awareness on the potentials of sago palm and its contribution to farming and local community
livelihoods as well as to food diversification and food security;

2nd mission (10 days at field)

1. Train extension personnel and field coordinators of the sago farmers association (in collaboration with the technical
National Consultants) in introducing and raising awareness on the potential of sago palm and its contribution to
farming and local community livelihoods as well as to the food diversification and food security;
2. Prepare the final report and present in the final workshop

Qualifications and skills
A university higher degree in agricultural extension or related field December 2017
A good working knowledge of development issues, problems and opportunities
involving sago in Indonesia. Good first hand practical experience with
production and management systems.
Fluency in the local language and English language is mandatory.
