OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General A: Students will acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement
Learning activities; dance, games, types of gymnastics, individual activities and activities in an
Outcomes: alternative environment; e.g., aquatics and outdoor pursuits.
C: Students will assume responsibility to lead an active way of life.

Specific A71 demonstrate ways to improve and refine the functional and expressive quality of locomotor skills to
Learning improve personal performance
Outcomes: A75 demonstrate ways to receive, retain and send an object with varying speeds and accuracy in
skills specific to an activity
C73 demonstrate etiquette and fair play
C76 identify and demonstrate positive behaviors that show respect for self and others

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will:
1. Demonstrate and explain the proper techniques for the underhand and overhead drop shots
2. Use the drop shot effectively during game play
3. Be able to determine when to use a drop shot accordingly in play.

ASSESSMENTS

Observations: - Students will work cooperatively with each other and show fair play amongst
classmates during all activities/drills.
- Students will be respectful of one another and the equipment.
- Students will demonstrate a disguise shot that intends to look like a smashe but last
minute performs a light drop shot that just goes over the net.
- Student that play at the net will tap the birdie with the racket so it just lands over the net
on the opponents court.
- Students will improve locomotor skills on the court through drills. By running from
middle to the left side to hit a shot. Then back to middle and then the right side to hit a
shot. This continuous motion builds up agility for the students so they are able to get
under the birdie to hit it.
- Students focus is on speed and accuracy. Not so much on distance.

Key Questions: 1. What are 3 cues for drop shots?

2. When would we use a drop shot (where would your opponent be when you would use a
drop shot?)?
3. What is the different between a drop shot and a net shot?

Products/Performan Drop shot observation:

ces: - Wrist action is essential in providing the disguise and element of surprise. The
optimum hitting zone is located somewhere above the central area of your racket.
- The forehand overhead drop shot is similar to the action of throwing a ball.
- A good drop shot will go just over the net, landing close to the net. If the shot is played
fast enough, it will supposedly not allow the opponent to hit it back. They also should
be able to, if the opponent hits it, it will give you the mid and back-court space to
exploit.

PROCEDURE

Prior to lesson Write the agenda on whiteboard before class, ensure equipment room is unlocked, and basketball
nets are put away.

Introduction Time

Attention Grabber Today we will focus on drop shots

Assessment of Students may have learned drops in a previous grade but this is the first time

Prior Knowledge student will be introduced to this type of shot in this unit.

Expectations for - Students will not talk when instruction is being given. If students are
Learning and talking, I will simply wait till everyone is silent before continuing.
Behaviour - No banging of rackets on the floor or against other ones, if students do it
will result in a 10 pushup punishment. This goes for the entire unit.
- Students do not have to be exceptional at the skill, but I ask that they try
their best, and to understand that they are being marked more on
improvement, and less on skill level.

Transition to Body Warm up: set up courts and rally with a partner
Handminton
- Divide the class into partners
- Have 1 student from each pair collect a shuttlecock and have the other
student choose a singles quadrant
- Have students hit (using the palm of their hands) the shuttlecock back
and forth amongst each other over the net 10 min
- Get close enough to the net so the birdie doesnt hurt your hand

Discuss handminton as a class

o Had to be close to the net
o Birdie tumbled over the net
o Aspects of the drop shot (todays skill)

Body Time

Learning Activity Instruction/Development: 10 min

#1 - Show a video clip of a badminton international final (5 min)
- Explain that this is what professional badminton looks like
- Reason for focusing on drop shots and the smash in the next four lessons
get variety in our games (not just clears)

Introduce Overhead Drop Shot
- Todays focus is going to be on the drop or net shot
- The reason I want you to learn the smash and drop shots is to give variety
to your games
- A drop shot is a deceptive shot meant to confuse opponent (look like I am
going to do an overhead clear, but I am going to hit it very short)
- Keep the racquet vertical so it looks like you are performing an overhead
clear
- We want the birdie to go to the sidelines or cross court

When would we use a drop shot (where would your opponent be when you would
use a drop shot?)?
- Mid or back court (think they are receiving a clear)
- Birdie path is somewhat flat
- Demo with student

Introduce Underhand (or Hairpin) Drop Shot

- Underhand drop shot is much more difficult
- Get under shuttle and try to guide it over the net
- The closer to the net the better should tumble just over the net
- Partner is away from the net area (just like the overhead drop shot)
- Racket face should be parallel to the ground and right beside the top of
the net
- Important to be able to use forehand as well as backhand
- Demo with student

Teacher Notes: Differentiation:

Assessments/ - Have students stick to overhand drop shots, but if they are getting
Differentiation comfortable with it, encourage them to use underhand drop shots.

Learning Activity Practice underhand drop shots

#2 - You will need 6 birdies, a flat cone, a partner and a .court
- Partner feeds birdies to forehand then backhand (repeat)
- Try to aim about 1ft over net
- Feed quite quickly so player is not waiting
- Performer lunges then performs underhand drop shot; using both
forehand and backhand
- Around cone, lunge, drop shot (fitness!)
- Try to aim them as close to the nets as possible
- Best shot tumbles just over the white tape
- Any shot that lands within the short service line = 1 pt
(try to beat your partner)

10 min

Teacher Notes: Differentiation:

Assessments/ - Depending on class size have, 3 partner pair to a court. 3 people on the
Differentiation one side feeding, and 3 on the other side hitting. After 2 round of filtering

through everyone hitting, the partner pairs will switch.
- Or have 5 on one side and 1 person feeding on the other. Again after all
of the group has gone twice, the person can switch out.

Consolidation of Students want to make it look like a clear or drive, but instead they only use a
Learning: little force to push the shuttle over the net. This shot is strategic to use when the
opponent is near to the back court, anticipating your stroke to be a clear or drive.

Transition To Next
Next class we will incorporate the skills we have learned into games
Lesson

Modified games of Badminton: (C Assessment) 10 minutes

- Students grab a partner and find a court (2 pairs to the court)
- 1 pair on the sidelines and they will be rotated on the court
Sponge - Practice with a partner close to the net for the remainder of class.
Activity/Activities - Modified game of badminton: playing area is from the service line to the net.
- Students must stay within this area and perform only drop shots
- The idea: to get a hang of the gently motion of the drop shot (it isnt a push, but a
simple light tap)
