Unit Paper 3

In the book, A Whole New Mind by Daniel H. Pink, it talks about the six senses

and how it will guide our lives and make our worlds right. The six senses are Design,

Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play, and Meaning. Pink, D. H. (2005) discusses how,

Stories are important cognitive events, for they encapsulate, into one compact package,

information, knowledge, context, and emotion. We all have our own stories and its best

to tell others what experiences we have been through. People even use stories when

talking to a doctor, telling them about what happened and why they came. Doctors have

to show empathy while asking questions about their lives because it helps relate better to

the patient. Pink, D. H. (2005) states that, meaning is possible in spite of suffering and

that meaning can sometimes grow from suffering. Wanting to find meaning exhibits in

everyone. He says a combination of external circumstances and internal will can bring it

to the surface.

When I become a teacher, I would encourage students to tell their stories and tell

them its great to listen to other stories. Sometimes we may be in the situation someone

else already has and we can learn from their experiences and either do the same thing

they did or avoid that way, depending what the story is. I would tell the students to make

pictures of a time why they felt vulnerable. Stories and meaning are two important

components when telling ones story and listening to ones story.
