Unit Paper 2

In the article, Children and Their Art by Al Hurwitz and Michael Day, they were

talking about visual culture and the many definitions they had. They had many different

approaches on how they wanted to teach visual culture. One approach to visual culture

in art education attends to the creations of applied artists such as graphic designers,

interior designers, illustrators, and animators. (Hurwitz and Day 2007. pg81) They were

talking about how some examples would be for art teachers to engages their students to

make CD covers for their favorite musicians or posters for school events. What I learned

from this chapter was that visual culture plays a big roll in art making. The study of

visual culture in art education can be exciting and meaningful for students of all ages.

(Hurwitz and Day 2007. pg 88). I believe that because the students would be using their

own creativity. Theres many different ways on how to teach students about visual

culture and the one I stated above was my favorite one to teach.

When I become a teacher, I would use this approach because I feel like more

students can get engaged this way in the activity. They would enjoy making what they

think best describes the CD cover for their favorite musician or making the posters for

social events. I feel like this would best be the way to keep children interested in making

their artwork. I would encourage the children to expand their mind and be really creative.

I think this is important in education because teachers have the opportunity to also

exercise their creativity and apply what they know about the social world and using it for

their art curriculum and engage their students.
