3.0 CALCULATION FOR FAULT CURRENT (ZERO PHASE SEQUENCE

CURRENT), IF DURING LINE TO GROUND FAULT AND THE CHARGING
CAPACITY (CAPACITIVE kVA)

Capacitive reactance, Xc = 1/ (C) = 1/ (2 x x f x C) = 5218.2 ohm

Fault current (Zero phase sequence current) , IF = 3 x (1/Xc) x (VL-L / 3) = 3.65 Amp

Capacitive kVA = (VL-L / 3) x IF = 23.18 kVA

4.0 RATING OF NEUTRAL GROUNDING TRANSFORMER

The capacity of neutral grounding transformer has been considered equal to 3 times the
capacitive kVA as calculated above to account for 10 % voltage variation & to avoid
excessive magnetic inrush and the capacity is applied on basis of 1 minute rating.

Accordingly,

Transformer kVA (continuous) = (3 x Capacitive kVA) / K = 8.54 10 kVA

Where, K= 4.7 (Ratio of capacity of 1 minute rating to that of continuous rating )

The rating of neutral grounding transformer shall be as follows:

Continuous rating = 10 kVA

Primary/Secondary Voltage = 11000 V / 220 V

Frequency, f = 50 Hz

Type = Single phase, dry type

One minute capacity = 47 KVA

5.0 RATING OF SECONDARY RESISTOR

Secondary Current of neutral grounding transformer is given by Ir=N x IF = 182.5 Amp

Where, N= 11000/220 = 50 (Grounding Transformer turns ratio)

The kW loss in secondary resistor during the ground fault will be equal to the capacitive
kVA.

Therefore,

Secondary resistor R = (Capacitive kVA x 1000) / Ir2 = 0.69596 Ohm 0.696 Ohm
Further, final value of Current capacity of resistor (IR) has been increased 10 % to account
for max. 10 % voltage variation,

Therefore,

IR = (182.5 x 1.1) = 200.75 201 Amps.

Therefore, the rating of the Secondary Resistor shall be as follows:

Resistance , R = 0.696 Ohm

Rated Current, IR = 201 Amp

Duty = 1 Minute
