2.0 DATA FOR CALCULATION symbol unit value
(a) Generator capacitance to ground per phase Cg f 0.21
(b) Surge protection capacitance per phase Cs f 0.25
(c) Capacitance of transformer busduct and generator Cbt f 0.15
transformer to ground per phase
Total capacitance to ground per phase, C = (Cg + Cs + Cbt) = 0.61 f
(d) Generator Line to Line voltage, VL-L = 11 kV
(e) NG transformer Secondary voltage = 220 V
(f) Rated Frequency, f = 50 Hz

GROUNDING TRANSFORMER AND
RESISTOR
FOR GENERATOR PAGE 3 OF 4
-
Fault current (Zero phase sequence current) , IF = 3 x (1/Xc) x (VL-L / 3) = 3.65 Amp
The capacity of neutral grounding transformer has been considered equal to 3 times the
capacitive kVA as calculated above to account for 10 % voltage variation & to avoid
excessive magnetic inrush and the capacity is applied on basis of 1 minute rating.
Accordingly,
Frequency, f = 50 Hz
The kW loss in secondary resistor during the ground fault will be equal to the capacitive
kVA.
Therefore,
Secondary resistor R = (Capacitive kVA x 1000) / Ir2 = 0.69596 Ohm 0.696 Ohm
Further, final value of Current capacity of resistor (IR) has been increased 10 % to account
for max. 10 % voltage variation,
Therefore,
Duty = 1 Minute
