Candidate: _Becca Ciamacco Date: ___4/17

Grade Level: __1st Subject: __Science/ELA Number of Students____21

1 Core Standard/Content Standard:

Life Science: Living things survive only in environments that meet their needs.
RI.1.10 With prompting and support, read informational texts appropriately complex for grade 1

2 Learning Objective/s:
Students will identify that the Amazon Rainforest has multilayers that contain different types of animals by
completing a rainforest craftivity.

3 Assessment/Monitoring Learning:
Type of Assessment (describe):
Students will be assessed using a checklist. This checklist will be used in order to assess the idea that the Amazon
Rainforest has different layers and that different animals live in each layer.
Monitoring of Progress: (describe)
Monitoring of progress will occur during review of previous learning and during the rainforest craftivity.

*List any special accommodations or modifications in the learning plan required by student needs.
Students who struggle with expressing their ideas through drawing will be able to research pictures of the animals
in order to get them going on their illustrations. Students will be able to re-read parts of the story in order to help
them.

Why have you chosen this approach for assessment?

I have chosen to use a checklist for this activity because it is a useful way to quickly check for
understanding of main concepts. I do not expect the students to know all the layers of the
rainforest after this one lesson. I just want them to understand the idea of what a rainforest is and
that it has different layers with different animals in each.

4 Central Focus
Students will identify the layers of the rainforest and the
animals that live there.

5 Learning Experience Plan

Anticipatory set/Introduction:
Must include, numbered:
1 Gain Attention: If you can hear my voice, clap twice.

yesterday? Where is Brazil located on the map?
3 Motivation: Statement of Student Objective: Today we are going to learn about Amazon Rainforest and
the animals that live there.
4 Introduction: Students will explore the Amazon Rainforest on Google Earth.

Strategies/Methods: (describe steps in instruction)

1. Students will listen to The Great Kapok Tree read aloud on the SmartBoard.
2. Students will draw and categorize animal cards into their corresponding layer of the rainforest
3. Students will put together and color their rainforest craftivity.

Why have you chosen these strategies/methods?

I have chosen these methods in order to integrate language arts and science into a lesson on the
Amazon Rainforest.

Closure/Conclusion:
Students will be asked, Is the Amazon Rainforest just located in Brazil? What is the weather like in a
rainforest?
